Final Fantasy/JRPGS seems to be stiking out this generation.

Just saw the review for FF13-2. Not a bad score, but not quite what we've been used to. Even FF13 got mediocre scores. I cant quite comment on 13-2 because I havent played it, but I did play FF13. Not a bad game, but just not the oldFF quality. Forgettable/bland characters, ok gameplay, and the usual esoteric and convoluted story. Honestly, I havent really played any great JRPGs this generation. Lost Odyssey was ok but not excellent. Eternal Sonata wasa little overrated IMO. I played a few others whose names are escaping me. Big change from last gen, when jrpgs were superb. Is the genre stale or have developers just been off their game?

I've really distanced myself this gen from JRPG's.

Previous gen,I only played JRPG's.

Wait, people classify Demon's/Dark Souls as JRPGs? The style of those games is completely Western-based (notwithstanding they're developed by a Japanese studio).

Wait, people classify Demon's/Dark Souls as JRPGs? The style of those games is completely Western-based (notwithstanding they're developed by a Japanese studio).

I don't know if JRPGs have somehow gotten worse or if WRPGs are just better by comparison.

On the handhelds they are alive and well but on consoles it is pretty disappointing.

I blame Sony for the migration to handhelds. PS3 seems like it would have been the console for good JRPGs but it released too expensive and too complex to dev for and so devs moved to the next best audience, handheld gamers. I don't know if that has any truth to it but it's what I've always thought this gen.

Final Fantasy is dead to me. Xenoblade however is an exellent JRPG. Best rpg I played this gen.

handhelds got some great ones. Also home console wise while iv enjoyed somthing like ff13 ill be the first to say it aint perfect,but it is very good. Im looking forward to xenoblade to see what makes it so revolutionary like some reviews have said though I have yet to see anything that shows this so far.

Not surprised it is one of the worst genres.

Also, while I don't consider them JRPGs, Valkyria Chronicles and Dark Souls are incredible games, and I can't wait for Gungnir. Plus, you might want to play Graces f and Ni no Kuni. I hear Graces f is the best Tales of game (even better than Xillia) and Ni no Kuni is pretty old school (and beautiful).

Well Basinboy is right. It's about the style. That's why the terms came about.

Even the producer of Demon Souls basically came out, and stated it was not designed as a JRPG (as he hates that genre)

Yeah same here pretty much. I played a lot of other stuff last gen too, but really a LOT of JRPGs. This gen, not so much at all.

They seem to make many turn-based Jrpgs still, which had been already a turn-off to the main stream market. With development cost increasing, they just moved to handhelds... most JRPGs on pc seem to be H based adult games so they aren't translated, though I found some of them have better combats than popular RPG games. :cool: I miss koei making JRPGs though, now it only makes warriors warriors and more warriors.

I wouldn't call that a traditional JRPG...well, partly. The game's strengths lay in the non-traditional/more Western elements - it actually got quite boring and cringe-worthy whenever it resorted to the traditional Japanese tropes (evil gods and the power of teamwork and whatnot...most of the eye-roll-worthy stuff in the second half of the game).

Anyway, there have been some good JRPGs this gen - mostly outliers like Xenoblade, Resonance of Fate and some handheld titles. As a whole though, we're not seeing the same output of AAA JRPGs that dominated last gen.

I really like Final Fantasy XIII's characters and feel that they helped carry the experience of the game. Also, scores in the 80's is awesome.

Now as far as XIII-2 goes, I'm still iffy on it. I really don't get the point of it and I don't want to spend $60 to find out. Maybe if the mood strikes me down the line I'll give it a shot, but it seems kind of inconsequential. I was one of the guys that loved FF13 (I rated it at a 10), and if this game intends on "fixing" the issues with 13 than it probably isn't the sequel for me.

But even if it had got 1000/10, that would be just because is called FF

The game was garbage, like FF12 and FF13-2 and anything Square makes after FF10

JRPGs are total **** exluding DS and Dark Souls :) All these girly characters in FF man don't get me started on FF its ****!
