Q: How do you look back at this point on the differences between the PS 3 and the Xbox 360?
A: You'll have a hard time if you port without having a PS 3 game in mind when you created the 360 version. That is where a lot of complaints are coming from. They created the 360 engine with a unified memory architecture in mind, with the embedded frame buffer with its advantages and disadvantages, and not thinking too much in early stages about multicore. If you try to get that over to the PS 3, you're in for a bad surprise. The PS 3 is all about streamlining about the two different memory pools. They are separate. You don't have to do tiling because you don't have an embedded frame buffer. All of these advantages of the PS 3 turn into disadvantages if you don't start making your game on the PS 3. Hence the griping. If you create first on the PS 3, it is pretty easy to port it to the 360. A lot of companies coming on board now will probably start on the PS 3 and move to the 360. The lucky thing for us is we didn't have to think about the 360 at all.

This proves nothing. Even if it did, can you name one time that hardware specs decided a console race?

This proves that the PS3 is so different you need to develope a game on a PS3 first and then port it over to other systems.  360 and a CPU are so alike, while the PS3 has no system that is equal or alike.

No kiddo, it only proves that the PS3 is harder to program due to the Cell architecture.

As much as I prefer the Xbox 360 over the PS3 so far, that doesn't say the Xbox 360 is any more powerful than the PS3...

Lol, wow. You completely misinterpreted that quote. He's saying that PS3 is more difficult to develop for ATM. If a dev were to port a game, it should be from 360 to PS3...you'll get an easier transfer and the outcome of the product on both systems will be much closer, if not identical.

We pushed the 360 to the limits," Gears of War QA manager Preston Thorne told Siliconera at last night's Hollywood launch party. While obviously an inflammatory remark, there could be some truth to the statement. After all, it was Epic that allegedly convinced Microsoft to bump up Xbox 360's RAM to 512 MB -- and Epic still maintains that 256 MB would not be enough to run Gears in its current state.

So does that mean PlayStation 3 couldn't handle the game? When asked, Preston skillfully dodged the question, but implied the answer was "no."

Selfowned?

Question: So does that mean PlayStation 3 couldn't handle the game?

Answer: No

no, you didnt comprehend right, he implied the awnser was no it couldnt run on ps3.

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2007/04/qa_with_factor_5_chief_julian_eggebrecht.html

: Some of the things I've heard are that there is a big limitation on this generation is theamount of total memory in the system. The 512 megabytes is just not close to the 2 gigabytes you can have on a PC.
A: Yeah, but didn't we have this conversation eight years ago and five years ago? Honestly, yes we spent the last four or six weeks going through hell getting Lair into memory.

I will just requote your comment from another post... so much about comprehension...

you people are fukkkin idiots learn to comprehend

if ps3 is so hard to develop for and different than xbox360 why is it easier to port such a different architecture to different architecture to xbox360 than xbox360 architecture game to ps3?

HMMM HE SAY'S UNIFIED MEMORY THAT EXPLAINS IT ALL PS3 HAS LESS SYSTEM MEMORY SO YOU HAVE TO MAKE XBOX360 GAMES ON PS3 YOU HAVE TO DOWNGRADE, ON PS3 THE MEMORY POOL NEVER EXCEED'S XBOX360'S SO EASIER TO HANDLE PS3 GAME WITHOUT DOWNGRADES BECAUSE ps3   GAMEs USES LESS MEMORY.

GODDAMN YOU PEOPLE ARE STUPID

HE SKILLFULLY ADMIITED XBOX360 IS MORE POWERFUL.

Hhhmm.. no and I'm a big 360 fan.  It means that it harder to port games to the PS3 because of the architecture of the system and it's software tools. The PS3 is just harder to program form. Trying to port an XBox 360 game to the PS3 is a nightmare because of the way the Cell processor and RAM is set up. Porting from the PS3 to the XBox 360 is much easier. This has nothing to do with which system is more powerful. The PS3 processor is more powerful and the 360 GPU is more powerful. That's about it.

Well, that made no sense. They don't need to make the PS3 first. They need to develope the game for both systems at the same time with both the PS3 programmers working with the 360 programmers.

To put this in idiot-proof terms, what he said here is to eat your veggies first, and eat that slice of cake with whipped cream second.

On the PS3 your memory is split like this: 256mb system / 256mb video ram. If you develop a game for the 360, you have 512mb unified, and you can split it as you want. Let's say you make a graphically intensive game, you put 128mb system, and 384mb video ram. You then take that game over to the PS3 - now you've got a problem on your hands - the two pools of memory (system and video) on the PS3 can't communicate quickly, you can't unify them, and you're stuck making a shoddy port.

Instead, you develp first on the PS3, working with the PS3 memory structure, then when you come over to the 360, you have the easier unified memory, and the game you developed for the PS3 works the same on the 360. Then you would tune the code to each system to get the framerates up, add graphical flourishes, et cetera.

The point he's making is that you build your game on the system with the less forgiving memory architecture first, because it's easier to port to the developer-friendly system than the other way around, this has nothing to do with system power, and everything to do with how you develop games.

TC, i'm an Xbox fan, but the interview only proves that PS3 has a complicate architecture, and PS3 to 360 ports are easier than 360 to PS3 ports. You see, not that 360 is more powerful than PS3.
