REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With more than 300,000 units sold between all versions of the Fire Emblem Fates game during its launch weekend, the Nintendo 3DS strategy RPG earns a place in the record books as the fastest-selling game in the history of the long-running, critically acclaimed franchise in the United States. The game sold more than five times as many units as 2013’s Fire Emblem Awakening, the previous record holder in the United States, during its first three days of availability.

Source (Business Wire)

It's sold five times as many copies as Fire Emblem Awakening in the same time period. It seems Fire Emblem has firmly placed itself in the echelon of successful Nintendo franchises.

As someone who simply can't stop playing Birthright myself, I can confidently say it deserves all of those sales, and more. I wonder where it will place in the NPD charts for the month.

Kinda weird record :P, do they count each version of the game as a sale though? I think it would be easy to beat awakening if everyone is buying the game twice

Those are fantastic numbers and I'm glad to see this franchise continue to grow. I don't have any plans to pick up these three games... maybe I'll try getting back to Awakening first.

To think the series was practically dead three years ago.

Even given that it's sold five times as much as Awakening did. Two times the sales still wouldn't account for that.

You definitely should give Awakening another go. I recommend Casual/Normal mode, maybe that's what finally gets it to click for you.

@Zassimick: Awesome!

See, I like Stella Glow- it's a cool game. But Fire Emblem Awakening is a special game. It's sort of like Persona 3/Persona 4, where yes, it's flawed, and you know it's flawed, but it's so damn captivating and compelling, you can't stop yourself from obsessively playing it. It's a really great game, and still remains one of my favorites of this generation.

@charizard1605: Oh, I believe it. I didn't know if Stella Glow was that way for you, being the surprise that it was.

Now I should have asked this in the other post: for the filthy casual, would you recommend Awakening or should I just get Birthright (note that I don't have Awakening anymore?)

The marketing campaign seemed quite a bit better this time around. Hopefully they can keep that up going forward. For a while it seemed like all their adds were made on a template.

Universally positive reviews probably helped too :)

Start with Awakening. I think Birthright is actually mechanically far superior to Awakening and completely and thoroughly outdoes it, but it has a far worse story, worse writing, and the characters aren't as compelling. At this point, I still think Awakening is the best point of entry into the series for newcomers- because Awakening-Birthright-Conquest-Revelation is a perfect and sensible curve and progression.

Three entirely separate stories, with different characters, different units, different maps, and even somewhat different mechanics.

@charizard1605: I wonder, will Nintendo of America start bringing Shin Monzou no Nazo for the Wii U VC? Also will they allow to release the classic Fire Emblem games from Gaiden to Genealogy, and Thracia 776?

I don't think they will do it- mostly because they'd have to relocalize from the ground up for what is ultimately bound to be a niche product, being sold without most of the features that helped Fire Emblem be a success in the west to begin with.

@FireEmblem_Man: A remake of Genealogy (with the story not being changed) featuring Fates mechanics would be something they could look into. I don't see them investing resources for a straight localization to VC because they couldn't recoup the costs with a Wii U release only.

They should definitely remake some of the older ones and use mechanics from Fates and Awakening. Might sound like sacrilege to FE veterans, but I don't know, I think it sounds like a good idea :P

Shame the game, you know, sucks. Awakening might have been tarnished by the "waifu simulator" aspect, but even then it felt truer to the series than everything they changed (and arguably ruined) with Fates.

The Fates mechanics can work with Gaiden, but I feel like the Jugdral series should be left unchange.

Step 1: Take a game

Step 2: Split the game into 3 separate packages

Step 3: Sell them as standalone games to a rapid fanbase

?????

Profit!

Its crazy how nintendo can get away with their clearly anti-consumer practices and even get praise for it.

It's not like Pokemon at all. As someone who's played both Conquest and Birthright and knows plenty about Revelation, they're three completely different games with different stories.

It's pretty clear that you don't know much about Fire Emblem Fates or how it's being sold.

It's not the same game split into three. It's three completely different games, with different stories, different characters, different mechanics, different maps and different experiences. And you can get all three versions for a collective $80. You buy one version for the regular price of $40 and then you can get the other two for $20 each. That's over 100 hours of gameplay for $80. I don't see how that is anti-consumer. And each one of them is a self-sufficient, self-contained game.

Even at the price of a regular retail title- that is $60- you still get two versions, which is 60-70 hours of gameplay at the very least. For the same price, people buy the likes of FIFA, Call of Duty, Battlefield and Assassin's Creed every year, which may or may not give the same amount of playtime, and are shameless copy paste jobs of their own predecessors. That is anti-consumerism.

What a deal! Based nintendo, right?

Look at these production values. They may even make a loss selling the whole game for 80 dolleros.

The amount of ignorance in the gaming community is astounding. It's no wonder some devs get away with the nonsense they pull on gamers. The non-informed see three games and mistakenly think that's a bad thing, because they're so used to developers pulling shady practices on us, they automatically assume the worst.

Pretty much this
