"The first third-party Wii game that would have Mr. Miyamoto bowing in awed respect"

:o

Granted, the publication is a bit iffy, but high praise like that doesn't just go to any old game, regardless of who's reviewing it.

Must be Aussie only.

@ Frozzik

Yes. And Mario Galaxy got one ten, and then another, and another x infinity. I don't see the point of that comment. There are far more valid ways to downplay this score.

And I don't believe it was hyped either. Sleeper hit?

Australia. Isn't the dev house behind de Blob an Australian developer? Not that that should matter, but I have a hunch it might have edged that number up a few notches.

That was not a demo of the game on the computer. After the computer game was made. THQ got the rights for the game and with the help of the people who made the computer game they made the Wii game. But the Wii game is all new and on it own another game.

I want this game to be good. I have been waiting for it and mushroom men for most of the year. I will agree with what your trying to say though. I don't see this game getting a 10 out of 10 anywhere's else.

Great score, but I was thinking the same thing.

It's rare to find an actual gaming magazine I've never heard of. Websites sure, anyone can create a website. But.... Magazines are something else entirely. I've never heard of Ultimate Nintendo Magazine.

So i heard but aside from a few cutscenes it looked too much like the same stuff... I guess they really added some depth then... Need more than 1 review to convince me of that, You know, in this age of cheap games sold for lots.
I still remember that game, Super Fruit Fall, that appeared in stores for 50 euro. Never heard of it and it looked fresh and interesting. (Hadn't played a puzzler for some time.) Almost bought it in my 'what the hell' frame of mind. When i got back home i looked it up and the game was playable for free online. Worse, it was rubbish too. I felt disillusioned, that people really would do something cheap like that. (That was before i became aware of analscape, celldorado, and other miscarriages from evils arse.)

IGN has made it clear that they adore the game. I think it's safe to say that it's a cut above average, though probably not 10/10.

Nice, but I'll wait for more reviews before getting too excited. I have been looking forward to this game for a while, and think it will be great, but a 10? I don't know... I'll be happy if it scores in the AA range on the majority of the sites. But I'll be even more excited for higher scores. :P

Yeah but this isn't Spore, this has barely been hyped, and the people who were anticipating the game (me being one of them) were only expecting maybe 8's possibly a few 9's from some of the more lenient places and probably a 7 from Gamespot. If it got 9's like Spore it'd be a major WTF moment since it'll be pretty much a sleeper hit.

I don't see Gamespot giving it a good score though, it could easily go the way of Boom Blox, that got a few 10's to start with, pretty much 9's and 8's from everywhere else but Gamespot gave it a 7. Plus GS have turned intoa weird website recently, either scoring games way lower than everywhere else or scoring them overly high.

Cool. De Blob was originally made by students in the Netherlands for a school project. That's the PC game available for download. I've played that version and it looks like they added a lot to the game since then. The new De Blob is made by an Aussie dev and looks much better. How would they expect it to sell if they didn't change the game up from the free version online?

Anyway, I doubt it will carry that level of score across the board. This game isn't subject to the "hype" rules of this forum because Nintendo fans don't hype games based on score. They judge them based on how fun they look. I would guess this game will get an average of 7.5-8.5 ratings, but this game should be cool no matter what the rating. De Blob + magic mushrooms = wonderland.

It's being developed by Blue Tongue, an Australian developer, which is now an internal devteam of THQ who of course publish the game. It's been invented by dutch students.

It's very very different, you only need to watch some gameplay to see that, for one thing the PC version doesn't have any missions or platforming elements to it really, you just go about and paint the town, certain buildings require certain colours and amounts of paint, that's it (and it's also really hard to control), the Wii version expands on that idea and makes a game from it, platforming, races, different challenges the kind of stuff you get in proper platformers (Mario, Banjo, old Crash, old Spyro). It's also really different to the Super FruitFall thing, with that it's a puzzle game so the main game will always be the same, the Wii version probably just had more levels. It'd be like if de Blob were the same as the PC version but a bigger city, then I'd agree that'd suck, but it's really nothing like it.

I give this review zero credibility considering that even IGN doesn't have the full game yet.

That, and no-name magazines don't make the best references for game scores.

The original university students who made the PC "version" are from the Netherlands so the de is probably because they're Dutch, Blue Tongue are part of THQ who liked the games idea and bought the rights to the concept or whatever it is you own of a game, I presume some of the students are working on parts of the game as well.

Also this thread is a very good way of seeing who is a Wii hater or not. It's fine saying the review source isn't the most credible (it is the official Nintendo Mag of Australia though, it's just not that old, this is like the 3rd edition or something) but some people saying "the game still looks rubbish" that's just hating, I don't personally like Gears of War but I wouldn't say it's rubbish, just not my kind of game.

lol I'd like to see what other games they've given 10s toDireToad

I looked up the magazine, they're pretty much new, only 5 or so months old. I think they use a star system (5 star scale, but they go by increments of .5... 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, etc....)

Scores I could find from them:

Boom Blox: 7

Battle of the Bands: 8 (some game I've never heard of - it got a 6 here, 60% on GR)

Brawl: 9

NMH: 9

Medal of Honor Heroes: 9

So, keep in mind that even though their scores can be translated to numerical ratings it really isn't the same. They can't give a 91 - 99%, it's either 90 (4.5 stars) or 100 (5 stars.)

Still, they seem to think it's better than NMH and Brawl (both did very well, AAA, here.) If they were only interested in giving all Nintendo games unfairly high marks they would've probably given Brawl a higher mark than they gave this game (and Boom Blox higher than a 7, 3.5 stars, for that matter.)

Pretty mixed, do they go by a 1,2,3,4,5 etc scale then? Surprised they gave MoH that high a score especially since it had no online in Australia. But still, they didn't give Brawl a 10 which would mean they aren't one of those complete biased Nintendo magazines, which is a good thing.

Pretty mixed, do they go by a 1,2,3,4,5 etc scale then? Surprised they gave MoH that high a score especially since it had no online in Australia. But still, they didn't give Brawl a 10 which would mean they aren't one of those complete biased Nintendo magazines, which is a good thing. bobbetybob

Yeah, I edited my post up there to explain it a little better.

Whether they think it's "better" than Brawl is questionable. Maybe different people review each game? Also, having recycled content or not pushing the game forward might have caused them dock points for Brawl. In my opinion Mass Effect was much better than GTA IV, but I rated them the same because ME had textures loading problems.
