Though even with all my Xbox fanboy mates recognised it was quite clear the magazine was purely promotional.
Pretty much the same with every official magazine. That is just an extreme example.

I don't think the official magazines are biased at all really, because for the most part they do give a really good view on games on their particular platform. The flagship titles, however, get the magazine editors gushing at every inch of the game with the odd critique here and there.
Incidentally, when the Aussie OXM reviewed Halo 3, one of their featured quotes was how the game was lacking in the evolution of the gameplay, let alone living up to heavenly expectations. That was on the last review page, and the review was done after that 14 page spread of the history of Halo.
I find that Offical magazines slam games from smaller developers that get no hype - aside from the odd ones that get praise. They are simply far more critical to those, than highly hyped and anticipated games.Indeed there are some examples where official magazines do good reviews - I thought OXM Australia's Halo 3 review was pretty critical and comprehensive too - however it was a bit skewed in judging faults to score. But it was well written.
Im guessing the writers and perhaps the people doing the magazine changed hands. Even when I was traveling between countries at the end of 04, I picked up various official Playstation, Nintendo and Xbox magazines, and the quality of each did vary. OPSM Australia was one of the worst magazines I had ever read, haven't touched it since. The UK one though at the time was surprisingly good. Bias yeah, but well written and produced.
