Enough of these grey "realistic" military shooters featuring coordinated, scripted action scenes. I want my shooters to be satanic. Vulgar. Over the top. Carrying 12 oversized weapons at the same time. Heavy metal soundtrack. Being a lone gunman with no allies consantly chatting your ear off.

Bulletstorm ALMOST had this right if it wasn't for the overly serious plot.

I want actual thrilling hardcore tactical shooters with heavy realism and planning, but that's a scarcity. That's how the market rolls; if you're that interested there's Painkiller, (indeed) Bulletstorm, Hard Reset and Serious Sam 3.

I'd say the game needed to be linear, without it then it wouldn't have been half the amazing spectacle shooter that it was. Fit with the pacing too.

You know what would be cool? a game that takes the parkour aspect of Mirror's Edge and adds more shooter elements. you could be an acrobat in first person, shooting things in ridiculous ways.

Player enabled high-flying sadism as its core gameplay, and over the top spectacle shooting turned up to 11 and done honestly (compared to the likes of po-faced shooters)? It isn't a strikingly original game, but there aren't any shooters like it.

Speaking of over the top spectacle shooting turned up to 11, what did you end up thinking of Vanquish? I recall you said you were currently playing it in some thread not too long ago.

Seriously you sound just like Yahtzee who loves games like Painkiller. There should be a more healthy mixture of both me thinks.

Still haven't got around to playing more of it actually, I have ended up getting bogged down with thesis work cutting out Vanquish time, and finishing off Shadows of the Damned and a 14 hour straight Deadly Premonition drinking stint with mates. I did hear that a different team did each of the levels though, can't confirm it but I heard about that during that said stint, and it seems to be a pretty divisive game in terms of what people like or hate about it. Which seems like all the more reason to play it.

I don't mind single player FPS games as long as they don't have a damn cutscene every 5 seconds and then lame slow mo and quick time action sequences.

But that's the point in terms of structure. You're going to one zone to the next, and getting a bit of dialogue and plot progression or involving scripted sequences to break it up. Difference is the actual core function of the game is using that whip, boot, abilities and weapon combinations to ratchet up creative kills, and use your surroundings; in the most horrible sadistic way possible - which is very involving and a radically different kind of game design compared the base standard Call of Duty - enter zone, weapons given, stop and pop shooting; which in reality is the most common critism of 'linear' shooters, this side of terrible level design 'you left the combat area walk back'. Which is what I mean by the whole not very original, but nothing is really like it. It's a game that understands what it wants to be; engaging sadism, low-brow jokes, impossible spectacles and a bit of moby-dick in the plot sprinkled in or good measure; though if you play through the game like a standard shooter not toying with the weapons and combinations, then I can see why it might be uninvolving (which is a noticeable flaw).

They need to focus on spot-on hit detection and excellent netcode. Oh, and dialing in those analog controls would be nice too. No excuses accepted from these so-called "proffesionals."

I'd rather see something like Shattered Horizon. You, the enemy, one gun, no unlocks, everything boils down to when you're concealed, when you can move quickly, and when you can fire accurately (you can generally only be doing one of the three at any given time).

Two games I would love to play. Unfortunately Deadly Premonition isn't on PS3 *yet* and I don't really have the money for Shadows at the moment.

I agree with this. Resistance 2 was the last FPS I played that actually got these things right and that was all the way back in 2008. Pretty ridiculous.

Which FPS has that map design from 1993? I'd love to try it out, I don't mind if the games are old. Personally I loved Crysis 1. Its very open world, very little cutscenes (and if the cutscene comes its actuall a GOOD one), and its graphics are still gorgeous. And the UI is sweet. If only FPS developers could make more Crysis 1 like games...

I agree TC. I miss games like Half Life and Red Faction were we are exploring a mysterious facility. Now a days you beat a level in China only to teleport to Paris. These are all locations we know of and this shows a lack of creativity on the developers part. I love it when levels connect into each other and I love being able to carry all of my guns.

If you want games with such complex level design,I strongly recommend System Shock 1&2.

SS1 needs DosBox to run,and there is a modder site where you can download it for free with some light mods that make it more playable by modern standards(it's legal)...

If it is to be good it has to keep up with the times. The level design of Duke Nukem Forever would've been fine back in the day, but not now. An old school shooter still needs to be interpreted properly for modern audiences. This doesn't mean linear and scripted levels, it just means the game should actually use techniques utlised in the last decade.

Bullet Storm was all flash and no substance, once the inital "wow" factor wore off it got very boring. I think this gen could use a new Time Splitters, those games were great! Alot of features and gamplay types, plus it had alot of humor, nothing was better than playing split screen with your friends and running from the Virus people.

HALO is the closest you'll get.

And maybe Duke Nukem forever, even if the game is horrible.
