The Playstation 3 was a victim of critic, bashing and hate when it first launched. Who can't remember those incredibly famous phrase that looked like a joke the first time we heard it : "$599 U.S. dollars". Two years later, Sony has gone a long way to improve the image of the PS3.

Here are five reasons why the PS3 is the console to own this holiday season:

1.- Home

Home has always been an interesting approach to a community. Although it borrows many of its ideas from games like Second Life or Hobbo Hotel, nothing similar has ever been done on consoles, and, truth is, the possibilities are endless. After spending quite some time with the Beta I can only say one thing: it's going to be HUGE. There's nothing as intuitive as traveling to the movies to watch previews, or moving towards a person and talking to them using your headset. Of course it will be full of men disguised as chicks, but which social community isn't?

2.- HDTV sales are through the roof

HDTV sets are selling great... and if you own one you'll probably want to extract as much juice from it as you can... and guess what? The PS3 is the perfect device for doing so. It can play most video and music files, it upscales DVDs and plays BluRays. It lets you download true HD movie and game trailers. State of the art, baby.

A point can be made that BluRays won't penetrate the market because Internet movie downloads are rapidly replacing physical rentals, but the truth is that unless Internet speed connections TRIPLE over the next two years, there is no way movie downloads will look as good as BluRays yet.

3.- Little Big Planet & Resistance 2

Resistance 2 comes as no revolution... but it sets to push the online FPS standard in the PS3. Two campaigns? Eight player co-op? Sixty-four players team deathmatch? Wow... maybe it has been done before... but that doesn't mean it isn't impressive. Hope you guys made it to the beta!

There's been nothing but possitive press for LBP since it was announced back at the GDC '06 (or was it '07)?. Truth is, this game is set to revolutionize the platforming genre, with so many tools to create and share your own levels. Warcraft 3 and Starcraft have both included very powerful campaign editing software, and they're still being played religiously. I expect the same from LBP. Plus, who doesn't love Sackboy?

4.- Sony has been addressing most complains about the PS3

Sony has heard most of the complains about the PS3 and addressed them:

  • People don't like our PS3 controller concept? Well, let's give them the Sixaxis.
  • People wanted rumble? Cool, let's give them rumble.
  • People wanted XMB? Fine, let's work on a XMB.
  • People want Betas? SOCOM, Resistance 2, LBP have or will have them.
  • People want to play online for free? Got it.
Sony dropped it's arrogant pants and began listening to customers, and consumers win =).

5.- Ps3 games look as good if not better than their 360 counterparts

Developers have already found their way around the tricky PS3 hardware. Multiplats such as Burnout: Paradise, CoD4, SC IV have already proved the PS3 can make games that look as good as their 360 counterparts. And some games have surpassed everything on the 360 and actually managed to make an impression. If games can look this good on the second year of development... how will games look two or three years from now?

Well in a sense yeah, they did. But now it's the best time to own a PS3. Last year belonged to the 360's... this year belongs to the PS3.

There's nothing as intuitive as traveling to the movies to watch previews, or moving towards a person and talking to them using your headset. Of course it will be full of men disguised as chicks, but which social community isn't?

Home is just a long cut to join games and form parties. sorry i cant see many people staying interested in having virtual meetups. sony needs to make a fully functional in-game xmb because 2.42 is nothing but a dud.

State of the art, baby.

good point

3.- Little Big Planet & Resistance 2

Resistance 2 comes as no revolution... but it sets to push the online FPS standard in the PS3. Two campaigns? Eight player co-op? Sixty-four players team deathmatch? Wow... maybe it has been done before... but that doesn't mean it isn't impressive. Hope you guys made it to the beta!

lbp will NOT appeal to casuals. most casuals dont give a crap about building levels and the platforming gameplay looks quite shallow. resistance 2 will be greatly overshadowed by gears 2.

4.- Sony has been addressing most complains about the PS3

Sony has heard most of the complains about the PS3 and addressed them:

  • People don't like our PS3 controller concept? Well, let's give them the Sixaxis.

  • People wanted XMB? Fine, let's work on a XMB.
  • People want Betas? SOCOM, Resistance 2, LBP have or will have them.
  • People want to play online for free? Got it.

Sony dropped it's arrogant pants and began listening to customers, and consumers win =).

This is one way of looking at it. yes you can sugarcoat all of sony's mistakes but as a discriminating consumer i dont see it that way. i see it as failure to have features implemented out of the box. asking me to pay $60 for rumbles is a plainer way to put it. trying to catch up the the 360's out of the box features for two years and failing is another plain way to look at it.

5.- Ps3 games look as good if not better than their 360 counterparts

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the most technically stunning video game ever made" (Gamespot, 2008)

I have not seen anything yet on the ps3 that made me think it couldnt be done on the 360. on the other hand i seriously dont think gears 2 could be done on ps3.

It's not too late? Aren't they still overpriced? Aren't they still behind in overall games?

lol home. It is not coming out this holiday season. my 360 plays with hdtv just fine. Resistance 2? really? LBP is definately a gem though. other that it is going to need to do better. A FPS and platformer isn't enough. 360 is spanking it left and right in most genres especially the rpg one.

My major complaint is where are the games. LBP isn't enough for me to buy the system. That obviously means all the games released and coming out this holiday season isn't good enough for me.

Differences in multiplats have small, and in the end its still the same game. An extra pixel or 2 doesn't mean anything.

Saying the 360 has better games than the PS3 is an argument that people take for true because it USED to be true two years ago. Now... both system have the same amount of great games, and it's just a matter of taste which console you buy. Last year the PS3 lagged heavily behind the 360, but this year it catched up with it, and it even surpassed it in some genres. Besides Left 4 Dead, there isn't any other big exclusive FPS coming out for the system, and that used to be the genre Microsoft dominated before.

One reason why 360 is the console to buy this holiday.

um. Gears of War is the big shooter this Holiday season. So is Fable 2 which is the big RPG and Banjo the big platformer this season. Honestly it isn't even about my taste in games. The PS3 caters to the same market as the 360, but their exclsuive games are not good to me.

The best game the PS3 has is a game I never liked. I wanted a PS3 for a long time, but every game I tried that I though I would like was bad except for Uncharted, but that games is short and has no replay value.

Exaggerating a little bit to much aren't we. You're basically saying every big game this holiday is on 360 only. Isn't that over doing it? To much bias/fanboy imo.

Well I was talking about FPS... but yeah... Gears will definitely bomb this holiday...
I'm not saying the PS3 caters a diferent market than the 360, I'm just saying the games cater to different gamers... like... some people would like Banjo and other would like LBP... same with Gears 2 and Resistance 2... and based on which of those games you like the most you should make your decition.

But like I said on the thread, this year, Ps3 is the way to go.

You should still consider buying a 360 Arcade then, I thought I wasn't missing much when I only had a Wii until I bought my PS3.

I know how well they sell. Databranshen reports monthly sales and Singstar/buzz almost always on top 10.

Still 360 becoming cheaper then a ps2 this holiday will make the 360 be the best option for any consumer that wants a gaming console. Specially now that microsoft have their own Singstar/Buzz (Lipz/Scene it!)

If Lipz delivers... it could steal away the spotlight from Singstar... unless they do something big with the franchise.

And in the time it took you to walk to the movie theater and start watching a movie or doing whatever task, me and my trusty menu interface will have accomplshed it in a fraction of the time. VR interfaces went out of vogue 10 years ago because while the idea sounded cool in theory, in practice it added fluff and slowed productivity.

The 360 can do all of that except play optical disc HD movies, but it has a more expansive movie library available for download.

A point can be made that BluRays won't penetrate the market because Internet movie downloads are rapidly replacing physical rentals, but the truth is that unless Internet speed connections TRIPLE over the next two years, there is no way movie downloads will look as good as BluRays yet. No they probably won't look as good, but most people don't care and most people don't have the equipment to see the difference.

Hope you guys made it to the beta!GeOW 2 says hi!

Plus, who doesn't love Sackboy?LBP could be good, but let's see how the final product is when we get our hands on it. So many hype this game and don't even know what the gameplay and everything truly is, simply because they think it is so innovative.

So becasue sony has finally gotten features the 360 has had for 3 years means the PS3 is the console to get? Just before the 360 gets a new interface that could move the bar ahead for sony to again need to catch up to? How long will THAT take, another 3 years?

5.- Ps3 games look as good if not better than their 360 counterparts

Developers have already found their way around the tricky PS3 hardware. Multiplats such as Burnout: Paradise, CoD4, SC IV have already proved the PS3 can make games that look as good as their 360 counterparts. Funny, cows laughed at 360 games and how PS3 games would blow htem out of the water, now after 2 years the PS3 games have caught up and that's supposed to be a plus? And some games have surpassed everything on the 360(arguably...while fanboys on both sides will claim X game looks better than everything, the fact is the top tier games for both systems are pretty much equal. and actually managed to make an impression. If games can look this good on the second year of development... how will games look two or three years from now? Better than they do now....on both systems. If the PS3 had a stationary target to shoot for, these claims would make sense...but the target is a moving one. You people will have to accept the PS3 isn't the allpowerful console sony claimed at some point.

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the most technically stunning video game ever made" (Gamespot, 2008)Yeah, we get it, gamespot gave MGS4 a 10. Let's ignore that the average score for the game is less than many of the 360 games cows like to target with their "1 AAAA > 10 AAA" argument.

Mardil

The PS3 is a good choice for people, don't get me wrong. There still is little to justify getting it over a 360 though IMO. It is FAR from being "the console to own".

An extra pixel or 2 doesn't mean anything.

too_much_eslim

Saying the 360 has better games than the PS3 is an argument that people take for true because it USED to be true two years ago. Now... both system have the same amount of great games, and it's just a matter of taste which console you buy. Last year the PS3 lagged heavily behind the 360, but this year it catched up with it, and it even surpassed it in some genres. Besides Left 4 Dead, there isn't any other big exclusive FPS coming out for the system, and that used to be the genre Microsoft dominated before.

To much bias/fanboy imo.

um for the 360 those are the big games for the system. Where is the fanboyism in that?

You made it seem as if Gears 2, Fable 2, and Banjo were the only games that'll sell this holiday and are king of the genre you classified them in.

(is this even confirmed 100% to be released this holiday its been delayed forever, as for that its not a social triumph its a 2nd life rip off no ones gonna wanna boot up an entirely seperate application just to do games, trophies, and chat they would much rather just do that in the xmb)

A point can be made that BluRays won't penetrate the market because Internet movie downloads are rapidly replacing physical rentals, but the truth is that unless Internet speed connections TRIPLE over the next two years, there is no way
movie downloads will look as good as BluRays yet.

(we'll firstly they dont have to triple over the next two years sorry to say but net speeds right now are good enough to serve HD content and you seem to think that america is the only place this matters, in europe and japan which both have higher net speeds then us digital distribution will work great, here it will work okay-good start a download and you can watch it streaming easily within 5 minutes. as for that the 360 upconverts dvds, and it can play hd dvds if you have the addon, i never intended geting in on the hd battle i own an ps3 and dont own a single blu ray movie but i purchased the hd dvd addon cause it was so damned cheap and i got quite a few hd dvds cheaply and they work just fine for hd moving viewing. as well didnt you just get done saying you can download TRUE hd movie and game trailers? last i checked you could do the same with the 360 and 1080p does not make it true high def 1080p is infact a hinderance more then a positive.)

(resistance 2 and lbp are both overshadowed by 360 releases this holiday season, And I doubt they will deliver what they promise on resistance 2 and lbp? come on its a kids game and nothing but a kids game the developer was too lazy to make a game so made an editor and packaged it as a game)

(Dont like the ps3 controller? lets release sixaxis an obvious rip of the wii mote that we shoe horned together 2 weeks after the wiimote was shown, want rumble? sorry rumble is impossible with motion...oh nintendos doing it? ummm its still impossible oh no wait we settled our court case! rumble for every one! xmb? okay heres an worthless update that does nothing okay now fans go hype it to hell and say it will offer every thing that it really wont offer. betas? last i checked 360 had betas...

5.- Ps3 games look as good if not better than their 360 counterparts

Developers have already found their way around the tricky PS3 hardware. Multiplats such as Burnout: Paradise, CoD4, SC IV have already proved the PS3 can make games that look as good as their 360 counterparts. If games can look this good on the second year of development... how will games look two or three years from now?

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the most technically stunning video game ever made" (Gamespot, 2008)
(one should never use gamespot even on gamespot their editorial validity is 0% any more gamerankings shows what the game truely is a movie that in the end doesn't look as good as promised, as for that COD4 360 has been out for a while and its been shown it matches the ps3 version, and SC 4 as well, I've never played paradise so i wouldn't know but i've played the others on both systems and no games have surpassed every thing on the 360 not a single one, uncharted hasn't because it still looks bad and it only looks up to par at all because of gimped AI, and bad level design they spent most of the time geting the game up to graphical snuff and forgot to put in actual good levels or good enemy AI. and it still isn't up to snuff)

The PS3 is a good choice for people, don't get me wrong. There still is little to justify getting it over a 360 though IMO. It is FAR from being "the console to own".

- Ok so I take it, you 360 fans don't find Home interesting... that's ok... my opinion's as good as yours there. But arguing it's useless because you loose too much time? What are games for anyway?

- Saying the average consumer doesn't notice a difference between HD movies and BluRay movies is saying the average consumer is eye-impaired. The difference between a downloaded movie and a BluRay is HUGE... if you have the necessary equipment... and that equipment is only going to get cheaper.

- So just because Gears 2 is going to come to the 360 means Resistance 2's online isn't impressive? Seriously, I don't see any big improvement over Gears one... it's going to be good... but it isn't pushing the online standard.

- I never said 10 AAA were less than 1 AAAA. I was just quoting the gamespot review refering to GRAPHICS.

- Hey guys, how bout Microsoft finally fixes the RROD? It's been three years already and it still can't catch up with the minimum hardware standard? Which is not breaking down after half year?

You do know that for an HD movie to match the BluRay quality it will take longer than a 5 minutes buffering right? Most BluRays play at a constant 30Mbps....
Some people might have that speed in their houses... but it's far from being standard.

And 360 has betas too? Yeah... did you have a beta for Gears 2? Or how about Banjo? Left 4 Dead? Fable 2?

Well if you haven't had the problem you're really lucky... but the fact that MS hasn't fixed it is unforgivable. Sure, let's give the user extended warranty and some XBL time to make it up to the user... but... I think I speak in behalf of most gamers... I'd hate to be afraid of my 360 breaking.

Its more standard then HDTVs. And lets be serious if you don't have high speed internet you probably don't have and HDTV to utilize BluRay.

all i am saying resorting to RROD to make a point is useless. If you want to get mad at a 360 fanboy use something else. RROD has been beaten to death. I also find it funny most people who are scared of their 360 breaking don't own a 360. I wonder why I am not scared or worried.

The only beta coming for 360 prolly is the CoD:WaW beta...
It's not that betas define which console it's better... it's just nice having them... and the PS3 has a lot more than the 360 at this moment. Plus you can only get in the beta if you have a Gold membership.

LOL... no... just no....
The top ISP according to SpeedTest.net is 27.865 Mbps and it's in NY.
The average is around 4Mbps.
HDTV penetration is around 40% last time I checked. And by February 2009 it's going to significantly rise.

Only way to get access to the beta is to use Qore is it not? Also of course you have to be a gold member Only gold member play online.

Also Demos are better than betas. The reason is every one has a chance to play it. Betas do not give that luxury. Yeah it has more betas now, but 360 owners never used it as why the 360 is the best system to buy when the PS3 had none.

No what I meant was you said that high speed internet is not standard and since you said that I said that more people are bound to have high speed net over an HDTV.

So these people who don't have High speed night in all likely hood won't have HDTV's. Broadband penetration is much higher then HDTV penetration.

[QUOTE="Mardil"]

Home is just a long cut to join games and form parties. sorry i cant see many people staying interested in having virtual meetups. sony needs to make a fully functional in-game xmb because 2.42 is nothing but a dud.

A point can be made that BluRays won't penetrate the market because Internet movie downloads are rapidly replacing physical rentals, but the truth is that unless Internet speed connections TRIPLE over the next two years, there is no way movie downloads will look as good as BluRays yet.

good point

Plus, who doesn't love Sackboy?

lbp will NOT appeal to casuals. most casuals dont give a crap about building levels and the platforming gameplay looks quite shallow. resistance 2 will be greatly overshadowed by gears 2.

4.- Sony has been addressing most complains about the PS3

Sony has heard most of the complains about the PS3 and addressed them:

  • People don't like our PS3 controller concept? Well, let's give them the Sixaxis.

Developers have already found their way around the tricky PS3 hardware. Multiplats such as Burnout: Paradise, CoD4, SC IV have already proved the PS3 can make games that look as good as their 360 counterparts. And some games have surpassed everything on the 360 and actually managed to make an impression. If games can look this good on the second year of development... how will games look two or three years from now?

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the most technically stunning video game ever made" (Gamespot, 2008)

I have not seen anything yet on the ps3 that made me think it couldnt be done on the 360. on the other hand i seriously dont think gears 2 could be done on ps3.

ok home was supposed to come out like 2 years ago, so what makes you think it will come out now

xbox 360 has hdtv, but i cant really argue that point well

lbp, resistance 2? how about GOW2 and far cry 2

microsoft solves all their problems as well

and i dont remember your other post so i go 3/5 for 360

oh yeah cod4, burnout etc were all ported from 360 to ps3 so they are better as the 360 has the original graphics and gameplay while ps3 has ported ones with less finish

Besides Left 4 Dead, there isn't any other big exclusive FPS coming out for the system, and that used to be the genre Microsoft dominated before.

same amount of great games? r talking.. games that r already out.. or games that r coming out eventually for the PS3? cause if your referring to the present.. the 360 trounces all over the PS3 with great games that r already out!

I deem these 5 reasons to be valid. Kudos, Thread Creator.
