From what I gather on my short tenure on the system wars board: Many do it for the ownz (not sure if I used or did that correctly). Apparantly many people are insecure in their own decisions to own the console they purchased that they seek solace and validation in numbers, or attempt to downplay the other console to make themselves fell better and to justify their decision. It's sad, and funny.
Others do it for passing time. I surf for thr the laughter I get from posters passing their opinions as fact and then offering no logical reason, or real facts for that matter on their opinion. Either way......it's all fun in the end.
we can but its in our nature to argue with each other. they started because people who can only afford one system, bought the system that they wanted, and good descision or bad they will defend to the death the system they bought so that they dont feel like they made thier purchase in vein. spelling errors i know. Why Can't We All Get Along Seriously?

I think it originated from prehistoric men arguing about whose shelter was better; on one side, you have cavemen, on the other, you have hut-dwellers. Both sides were so sure their way was correct, that they argued continually over the smallest things.
It seemed like the arguing would never end... until they discovered fire. The prehistoric men noticed that fire was more powerful than anything they had ever encountered! This made them want to prove which kind of shelter was truly the best (according to their standards)... by using fire on each others shelters. Both partys naturally refused to let the test be done on their own type of shelter, but thought the other type must be tested! Both the cavemen and the hut-dwellers proceeded to destroy each others homes; and they succeeded.
Sadly, the prehistoric men destroyed their only shelters with fire, and most died during winter season. The few who survived later looked back at this incident and realised it was pointless and harmful to the community. Thus, they named this terrible tragedy The Great Flame War.
Even today humans haven't learned that arguing over pointless things gets us nowhere, and that we would be better off looking at the xBox 360s' and the PlayStation 3s' advantages, and not concentrating on why one is inferior to the other... even though the ps3 is obviously like 10 billion times better than the xBox 360. lol
Hooray for flame wars!
Serious answer: it's just so fun to read the stupid things that some people say.
P.S. : I have no real preference...
I've been here since nearly the beginning...I come for the lulz.
Why did it start? I remember it well actually, when MS got into the game, it ramped up (here at least...we are not talking about Master System v. NES or Genesis v. SNES), when people were nitpicking pixels out of place (literally) when comparing XBOX v. PS2 screenshots (back then, Nintendo had no argument, not even sales). This place, in it's infancy, was nothing like today. It was funny and fun..now it's just sad. I think it's because the arguments are always the same...it's just the players that change.
