Okay, we know that MS may or may not develop a protein folding project, Rossetta. And we already know the PS3's folding project is rocking and rolling. I just want to say one really awesome thing: Can you imagine, if one of these things actually does something great for medicine, the level of absolute awesomeness and arrogance in the respective companies Press Releases that follow? Headlines would be: PS3 (or 360) CURES CANCER AND IS GOOD FOR HUMANITY. I can't wait. It's going to rule.

sounds nice, but I doubt consoles will all of a sudden be loved by all of humanity. the consoles will not find the cure for cancer, it can help scientists find a cure faster, but it won't create a cure itself. you would probably see the consoles on the cover of Time and other huge mags, but the real love will go to the scientists who took the data and did something with it. Can't imagine Daddy buying little Timmy a PS3 because it could help scientists do their work faster or easier.

Sounds like it would be a free pass to go kick Jack Thomson in the balls. But seriously I think that the consoles contribution to the research is minimal compared to what the scientists and researchers are doing. The headlines would be more like: "Some guy/misses in a lab coat cures cancer............. PS3 watched.... and held the flashlight."

they are just doing mundane math. it's up to researchers to then sift through a lot of this data, think up ideas, test them, publish, peer review, and create something that is actually useful. the machanical help doesn't really get credited much.

That's like saying test tubes are responsible for curing cancer.  Or maybe the desk that the scientists sat at.  Folding at home is nothing more then a tool.  Knowledge is nothing without wisdom to apply it.
