Some thoughts on the Folksoul demo. I think here in America it's called Folklore.

1. The in-game graphics are spectacular and are still going to be improved. Solid environments and character design, but it's the enemy animations that are to me the most impressive feat about Folksoul visually. Still, the story cutscenes need to get better. Character's movements are iffy at best during those and the backgrounds and environments during those comic like cutscenes are god-awful. The framerate moves pretty good, but inconsistent at times.

2. There best be voice acting in the main story parts, cause that's way to much reading for me. I may not have understood a thing (japanese writting), but regardless, there's a lot there. In important scenes, they better have voice acting.

3. Music was ok. Nothing Uematsu about it, but not bad.

4. The game looks original and plays original. The combat isn't fought by your character as much as it is the soul's of the enemies that have fallen to you. Cool concept, and the sucking up of the soul's is a work out, especially that mini-boss, shaking the controller. It's a cool concept.

This demo was good, long enough to please me, and showed a solid foundation in the works with this game. I'm hoping to add this to my PS3 list of buys this year. This plus Lost Oddyssey and Blue Dragon on 360? Freaking sweet!

When I watched the gameplay videos, I noticed the summoned soul's had this delay while they attacked enemies.  I wasn't sure if it was a frame rate problem or a strange stylistic addition.  Was it still evident in the demo?  (if you know what i'm referring to.)

voice acting and Cgi were obviously taken out so the demo wasnt well over 1 gig, it's amazing to think that demo was 1 gig when it was only 10 minutes long!!! take the full game plus the voice acting and cgi it must be nearly a 20gig plus game easy

Yeah, the devs said they took out the voice-acting to make the demo smaller in size and easier to download.

let me comment on your second point, why there are no voices

this quastion was asked to Ryan (from MGS4) and why they are not including english+japanese voices in the game? his answer: we'll have to pay both actors for each game, in fact WE EVEN HAVE TO PAY THEM FOR DEMOS

so there might be voices in the final product, but they cut it here inorder to cut the cost   :)

the gameplay was amazing and very interesting. i've never seen anything like it. As long as tehy nail the story down to something very interestnig and immersive, it's gonna be a must buy for a lot of asians or asian-game fans

i dont know why people complain about framerate stutters in demos, we know they usually fix it before the game comes out and keeping it licked isnt a main prority in a 10 minute demo.

This game is a lot like Kameo. It has that epic music, it isn't turn based, and you assign monsters to use to different buttons.

I am sick of this constant text though. This game would be so much better off with cutscenes. This game is 2 generations behind in my book. Last generation cutscenes were a standard, this generation interactive cutscenes are the thing. Why the heck does this game still have me pressing "X" a million times?

I like the game, but that's it's only downfall.

Um, I never said anything about anyone turning into monsters. They share a lot though, except Kameo is better.

I'm going to have to boot the game up again.  I feel like I played a different demo called 'folksoul' because I got none of these positive impressions.

1.) I couldn't read it; it was all in Japanese.  As such, I couldn't follow the story at all...so how are you hearing VOICE ACTING?

2.) Music was a mix of circius and passionate classical.  didn't like the circuis music at all.

3.) I played with the male character.  does the female yield a different set of experiences?

4.) I beat up some enemies (maybe 15?  20 in total?) and grabbed some souls...killed a big *** beetle and after that, the game was just about over.

5.) Gameplay felt horrible, camera rotation felt sluggish.  Did not seem fun in a year that features Sigma and Devil May Cry 4.

6.) Sometimes grabbing souls left you open to attack.  Made it kinda risky...didn't feel right.

7.) Graphics are great.  Well pleased there.

Now then...did I play a different 'Folksoul' game?  Do I need to play with the female?  Did you see English text or hear English voices?  if so, how?

YES.  So maybe I did play the same game...but really, the gameplay did NOTHING for me.  it was about as far from impressive as an action game can get.

I agree with this. Sony fanboys need somthing to hype though. They get excited for remakes, awful airplane combat games, and mediocre japanese action games.

mean.  :P  but they don't have anything to compare their PS3 experiences to (they've not played games like Kameo in reality because they'd never touch a 360), and as such, their understanding and expectations may be limited.  we are in a position to be a bit more objective and understand what reviewers are looking for.

does using the female character yield a different kind of experience?  because I didn't see much to really enjoy.  graphics are second to few...but unfortunately, we don't play the graphics, you know?  gameplay seems kinda bland.  maybe the additional creatures they can channel (that we haven't seen) will make the difference?  Idunno.

But based on that Demo, I'll pass.  Unless there's something major I missed.

Japanese game design 101, Let me guess was there glowing orbs to collect? 90% of J-dev'd games have those, in the other 10% they dont glow. Ok, thats kinda a joke but y'know kinda not.

Isint the company RPG devs? (for the most part) I remember reading (in a older folklore thread) that.. of course... I have no idea what they've made.. but.. it could be why people are hyped about them making an RPG even after they make a sub-par action game.

lol, you would think, but you know, that camera is controllable in the dungeons! No more drunk uncle screwing ya over every which way. I have faith in this game, but as I mentioned before, it needs improvements. It's on the right road though to being a very good RPG.
