For next-gen, why not have a standardised PC? Console-PC hybrid?

As much as I love PC gaming and all the bells and whistles that come with it (modding, graphical flexibility, superior rendering), I'm willing to forego said advantages to have a smoother experience as long as they throw away the controllers and stick with the mouse & keyboard combo. I realise that this would basically just be a console with native (exclusively) mouse and keyboard support + standardised monitor instead of TV.

The reason I propose this is quite simple. Most developers don't give a **** about PC gaming and are content with ****** ports (read what Bethesda, Ubisoft and id have to say about PC gaming). This doesn't mean PC gaming has to stand aside and let the hybrid supplant it but rather have the hydrid over console gaming.

Short version: Why not include native mouse & keyboard support in console gaming or introduce a standardised PC gaming rig to the market?

Because it wouldn't have the enforcement of said standards that consoles have, and it wouldn't have any advantage over a normal PC. Without being able to prevent non-compliant games from being allowed to ship, there's really nothing to gain.

I admit that the lack of mouse and keyboard support is what holds consoles back the most for me. I'm not a graphics whore but the games I play require hotkeys/shorcuts and the speed of the mouse.

Then why not create a console that physically resembles a PC (fixed monitor size, mouse & keyboard, set hardware specifications) with a proprietary OS?

PC hardware manufacturers don't want that to happen, for one thing.

Well, it's no different from having another Wii/PS3/Xbox 360 on the market.

Yes it is, if it's positioned as a gaming PC. Nvidia and ATI want people upgrading often, not buying one box and using it for years.

I'd say that "Standardised PC" is a contradiction. It's a broad platform with a lot of users, even if you look solely at gamers (and not general purpose users). The different parties (OS vs CPU vs GPU makers) make it very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve...and those are the reasons why we have consoles.

The PC's strength is its continuous and varied range of processing power - you can adapt to your own needs and requirements.

It's also one of the PC's weaknesses.

OK, perhaps I worded the topic title wrong. What about a CONSOLE that looks like a PC with mouse & keyboard support? One of the strengths of PC gaming lies in the increased accuracy that the mouse brings to the table! Now, if only we could salvage that and bring it to console gaming...

true. same goes for me. but good god, i can't imagine myself playing, say, sonic with a keyboard, or a fighting game, or pretty much anything that isn't those genres you described and point & click RPGs.

So, almost like you said, another console. Everything you've just said describes a console.

  • mouse and keyboard "exclusively" is already viable on console it's up to the game dev to use them
  • you can use a standard monitor with your console.

I would have to agree with most of the PC consenses here.

That would be a bad idea. I'm no PC gamer, but a standardized PC would limit, hinder and "close" what PC gaming was always meant to be.

PC gaming is always evolving in terms of technology, graphics engine and so forth. And it's an open source for developers to always improve beyond the limits contrained within console gaming.

I'll still play on my PC. Whoever the create of this console would be, they will most likely be dumb and allow First-Party approved keyboard and mouses.

Most developers don't give a **** about PC gaming

Adversary16

Most developers? Hmm, that seems exaggerated.

You mean a very small minority of devs don't give a **** about PC gaming whereas the PC still maintains the most dev support of any system, and gets the most exclusive games of any system.

I think intel was aiming to make standard PC hardware by releasing their Larrabee (project offset was the flagship title for it)

Well there's more to the differences between a console and PC then just hardware standards, though giving PC a hardware standard would remove what makes PC gaming awesome.

no

this would force any type of competitive gaming to be pushed into a desk where keyboard and mouse work best. If you want to game on a PC game on a PC, if you want to game on a couch then game on a console.

And before you say bu.. bu.. but PC games can be played on a couch with a controller... go f***ing play an online game like bf3 or cs:s with a controller and tell me how much fun you had playing with 31+ people that have a keyboard and mouse.

memory will end up working differently since its going to be dedicated and mostly managed by the game, so mods wouldn't really work without breaking memory limitations unless dev's made games with room to allow for users to customize, or they can have something like forge which will set limits automatically

A console is a standardized PC. CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD.

The only thing I could see is some kind of upgradeable console, but that hasn't worked well in the past (for things other than HDD size).
