Saw this on gaf. Link

"Sony is working on an as-yet-unannounced new gaming console, former AMD employees say, and the processor designer may play a key role in the new product.

AMD's graphics technology is already used in Microsoft's XBox 360 console. However, Sony's PlayStation 3 — introduced in 2006 — relies on graphics technology from Nvidia.

AMD declined to comment on the project. Sony Chief Transformation Officer George Bailey also declined to discuss Sony's new console, or even acknowledge its existence.

However, at AMD's analyst day last month, AMD Chief Financial Officer Thomas Seifert identified gaming as one of several trends that will drive revenue growth at AMD in 2012."

That would be awful. AMD is always behind the curve and focuses on budget parts. If that's the case the next xbox and PS3 are going to be much weaker than we are expecting.

THE ENCRYPTOR CHIP! First you must solve the programming puzzle to unlock and encrypt it, then you can make games! It's fun for everyone! Naw, hopefully they won't do another Cell.

I prefer AMD over Nvidia, Nvidia, just because it has "teh physics" doesnt mean you can charge it 50 bucks more than your AMD equivelant.

Indeed.. ATI was responsible for the best architecture upgrades in today's videocards. Microsoft didn't make them conform to any API when they designed the Xenos, and it resulted in technologies like the unified shader architecture used by both nVidia and ATI...

I think Sony should throw in an AMD 5850 or 6850 in the PS4, both are decently priced and are better than the competition from what we have heard so far.

On average the 7970 is roughly 20% faster then GTX 580 (512 cuda cores) , which means Kepler aka GTX 680 with 1024 Cuda core will mop up the 7970. Nvidia claims nearly 2x the performance of the GTX 580, but I would say an average of 50% faster to be on the safe side.

.....Which came out a year after the old fastest single gpu availiable, the GTX 580.

A current gen card being faster than a last gen card isn't impressive. Nvidia hasn't even dropped their new card yet.

Seems it won't be as overpriced as the launch PS3 then. :)

Nega3

If the PS3 was overpriced for having a powerful graphics card.... well, you know where I'm going with this. :P

The Blu-ray drive was more of a factor in price than anything at the time. Stand-alone Blu-ray players cost more than the PS3 back then, and Sony had to sell the console for a $200 loss on each sale.

Well, AMD is "porting" thier GCN to TSMC's high performance 28nm node i.e. the same note as NVIDIA's Kepler.

Well that's neat, always been an Nvidia guy myself, but hopefully PS4 has a card worthy of its CPU so its not bottlenecked and at a lower level then it should be.

Seriously, if they had a GPU equivalent of the 360's, Uncharted 3 would be a much prettier game. Maybe not leaps and bounds prettier, but enough to notice.

Hopefully they also don't skimp on RAM, since that was where the multiplat issues came in.

Whatever Sony designs, I'm confident saying they're going to pay much more attention to how the GPU and CPU (especially Cell processor, if they continue it [and there doesn't seem to be any indication at the time why not]) co-exist and function simultaneously to achieve top efficiency without sacrificing performance or visual quality as opposed to simply throwing in an RSX like they did with PS3.

Definitely, if they can keep the GPU on level with the CPU more and utilize RAM much more effectively, then the PS4 shouldn't have any issues with developers.

Honestly who cares about Ps4, it probably won't even release anyways. PAthetic Sony is broke as hell. Even if it did release, it will be pathetically weak and 720 will stomp all over it and drag it through the mud.

Ya like the 720 will get anywhere fast with a weak gpu similar to a 6670
