Would buy a one instantly if it had backwards compatibility.

Sauce

"If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards," said former Xbox chief Don Mattrick, explaining why Xbox One wouldn't play Xbox 360 games mere days after it was unveiled. If that's the case, then the Xbox world under new division head Phil Harrison may be as backwards as the average Justin Bieber hat. According to Xbox partner development lead Frank Savage, Microsoft is working on a solution to get Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, but players at home may never get to experience it themselves.

When asked by an audience member at Microsoft's Build developer conference whether the company had plans for backwards compatibility on Xbox One, Savage responded in the affirmative but with a serious caveat. Getting software made for drastically different hardware to run on another machine is a tricky proposition.

"There are [plans], but we're not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately," said Savage, as reported by Kotaku Australia. "It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there's nothing to announce, but I would love to see it myself."

A Microsoft representative reiterated Savage's statement to Engadget in a follow up inquiry, but also stressed that there are no official plans to bring Xbox 360 compatibility to consumer Xbox Ones any time soon. "It is super challenging to emulate two completely different architectures, and there aren't currently any plans to build this," said the spokesperson.

Players clinging desperately to those copies of Perfect Dark: Zero and Bomberman: Act Zero, don't get rid of your Xbox 360s just yet.

I would pick one up right away. I have such a big catalog of 360 games I really can't afford to get rid of my 360 period.

.... to play what? Halo, Fable, Gears and Forza? .... out of all the consoles in history.... it appears to be the worst for backwards compatibility. now obviously I know multiplats.... but damn....

Not that this will happen.... emulating an XBOX 360 won't work on the best of PCs... let alone a weak Xbox ONE... and they know it.

Why do you think Sony opted for streaming ps3 games? because its the only sadly viable option.

Would be a waste of time and resources imo, I hope they don't do it, my 360 still works fine and when I get the urge I just use it. They should just adopt a wait and see attitude on this, considering Sony has taken the lead with PSNow, MS should wait and see how succesfull that is.

If it gets true BC where I can just stick a disc in then that pretty much guarantees Im getting an X1. I have such a huge backlog of 360 games I haven't finished.

Same here and everyones saying "for what? Gears, halo?" No, because I have a book with a 125 360 games I wanna be able to use in the future. Having a machine that can do it for the next 10 years would be nice. Granted like the Wii U the BC for the 360 will go away one day but it's still a nice feature to have.

MS has access to all the source files. I'm pretty sure MS could do if they wanted to.

The performance hit still exists. emulation is emulation.

Does the 360 even have games to emulate in the first place?

Xbox 360 BC on the Xbox One hardware cannot be done to an acceptable level of performance, same with native BC on the PS4 for PS3 games. The architectures of the Xbox 360 and PS3 are just too difficult to emulate and the PS4/Xbox One have too weak of internals.

I don't think even the most powerful PC CPUs could properly emulate an Xbox 360 or PS3 right now either.

That'd be great, would definitely make the Xbone more appealing. It really sucks that these new consoles have no BC, it's the one thing that bugs me about the PS4.

Same here. I think I may buy "backup systems" once they hit $150 price point just keeping them boxed until my current PS3/360 die.

"There aren't currently any plans to build this." So an entire article hyping something that MS explicitly states isn't in the works.

Great find.

In this thread,

people/lems: I would instantly buy a $500 console to play games that can be played on a different console I already own.

Not saying its the feature that vaults the One over the PS4. But to be able to play all your games via the disk without the issues of latency in streaming, that's a megaton to me. But either way if there's a way to do it that would be amazing.

Lol, obviously you don't know the meaning of the word "megaton" BC has been on consoles for many a generations. Adding it this while as I said awesome isn't a megaton.

I actually agree with this. It would be a fun feature, but it's a minus if it becomes a major factor in your console design. Look at Nintendo, still using the same CPU type in the Wii and Wii U (only modified) that the GameCube was using. Using the same GPU in the Wii as the GC. That sort of thing is BS. I'd never want a current machine to be compromised in design for the sake of previous gen games.

get the xbox 360 into a little SOC and include it with future 'premium' skus. price difference 50 of your american pesos.
