What they've done with the Forza Horizon series is nothing less than stellar and can't wait to see what this open world game is all about but suffice to say, these guys got phenom talent and it sounds like they're ramping up and adding even more.

Stop already MS, got too many great games already and not enough time in a lifetime to play them all.

Anyway, thoughts? What's your best guess the genre of this new game. Shot in the dark I know since very little info to go on but hey, just for fun.

Forza Dev Working On Non-Racing Game, Opening New Studio

What's on the horizon?

Forza Horizon developer Playground Games is opening a new studio soon to work on a non-racing open-world game.

GamesIndustry reports that the company is looking to nearly double its current headcount to around 200 people to work on a game currently codenamed "Project 2."

"We feel like we've become pretty good at racing games over the years," said founder and creative director Ralph Fulton. "We can always strive to get better but we'd love to prove ourselves in a different genre. That's another goal of Project 2, to allow us to do that. We're going to need to hire some very talented people with experience that we don't have."

Playground has made three Forza Horizon games but no other full titles since its inception in 2010. It's unclear what the developer's plans for Project 2 are, but Fulton did say that he and his team have no plans to abandon Forza completely.

"Our business with Forza over the last six, seven years has been great for us. It remains the cornerstone of our business--we're not running away from racing, we still feel passionate about making new racing games and delivering new experiences for our players.

"Horizon 3 was a watershed game for us--it's certainly our best-reviewed game critically, it's our most commercially successful game as well. It's the first time we've experienced that commercial breakout hit phenomenon--the other games have been successful but not on the level of this one. We want to keep doing that. In a way, that game took six years to make. So we want to keep developing that skillset and pushing new boundaries."

Whether Project 2 will be exclusive to Xbox is unknown. All Playground's games so far have been published by Microsoft, but the company is independent, and a non-Forza IP would not necessarily have to be Xbox-exclusive.

The developer's latest game, Forza Horizon 3, released in 2016 to positive reception. It was recently announced that the game is adding seven new cars--see them all here.

Is this a new game from the Cancel franchise? MS more popular and numerous one? I can't wait to see all those trailers full of unrealized promises. To quote Donald Trump: It's gonna be great!

Great news indeed. More AAA games on the Xbox as usual. It's like gaming heaven on Xbox. Forza Horizon 3 is nothing short of AMAZING. I can only imagine how Project 2 turns out. I am pumped!

More games is never bad. I'm interested in hearing more details. Sounds like it is very early so we have a while to wait. Playground is a good studio though, I'll keep my eye on this one.

No doubt and such a contrast. MS opening new studios for new IP's > Phony closing studios and the same old tired UnFarted/Gods of Bore/GT Arcade. lol :P

My first thought is that the game will be what I've been saying they should make next. A Vehicular Combat game akin to Twisted Metal only a thousand times better and tons more fun. :D

Good for MS in keeping this studio going. Companies like Sony would of shut them down by now. Well done MS!

My only issue is why does it have to be an open world game? There's so many open world games out right now, not every game needs to be open world to be successful. I lost interest in Ghost Recon cause from the looks of it, it looks like another generic open world game.

Vehicular Combat open world game makes a whole bunch of sense to me... Fingers crossed.

Maybe, but if they want to do things with vehicles stick to forza.

If they truly want to try something new they commit fully to it and stay away form vehicles.

CancelBox One

It cancels games faster than a speeding bullet.

Completely disagree since Forzas are a plenty and what I suggested makes perfect sense since that fits nicely into what they've shown they're great at, Vehicles, physics and beautiful go anywhere open worlds. Just add AwesomeSauce weapons and let the good times roll baby.

The last thing they should do is a fantasy based RPG or on-rails action adventure movie game or some other nonsense that they have no experience in. That would be... Disaster Awaits. :P

If they did that, I would be on it in a heartbeat. Twisted Metal was my go to game for years due to how fun the versus mode was. You could be onto something here.

Yeah man, back in the days of PS1, me and some friends got carried away a few times staying up way to late having a blast with TM and waking up late, blurry eyed and long days in the office kicking ourselves for playing so long into the early morning hours. Good stuff. lol

I gotcha, I'm in the mindset of if you want to try something new they go all the way with it. Yeah you're known for great driving but why not branch out and surpise people with something else. Forza will always be there for them, go all out and make a new game that you've wanted to make that's not driving.

Understood and I'd give them the go ahead, always up for something new and different. Just that I'd be a little weary. If they incorporated ground, water, air and perhaps even space vehicles along with exploration and combat, me thinks that would be right in their wheelhouse. :D

New game outside of Forza Horizon Series, means Playground Games could go multiplat with this game. One thing Playground does well is make a lot of content in their worlds with ifinite replayability. Def. Interested to see what they'll cook up for this project.

Hope its not a multiplat if so they'll have to dumb it down for PSN.

Not likely i think MS will be funding it. Its the ideal game for Scorpio.

Going to be multiplat unless it's Microsoft IP, which it doesn't sound like. M$ losing another developer it seems.
