This is a feature I would love to see implemented more in FPS games. I'm sure most of you know Killzone has this feature, and some of other games (Not as many as there should be) have it as well. To be completely honest with you, I have absolutely no interest in playing with other people online, especially in an FPS. Yet at the same time I want to experience a competitive fight inside of a multiplayer world, so bots are perfect for this. You get the same experience, but without the high 13 year old boy's voices screaming over a mic.

Online play, in an FPS game especially, is just shallow and annoying (playerbase issue mostly) more times than it isn't. Bots are the perfect alternative for people who value their hearing and sanity.

Its nice, but it reallly is a waste of programming time when most users aren't going to play with bots.

It is nice to practice strategies against the computer, at least in RTS, I don't play FPS anymore.

Why wouldn't people play it if the AI was intelligent enough? I've actually had more fun with Killzone's bots than I ever could have online. The bots use a variety of classes, medics actually heal, engineers place turrets in smart locations, etc. Online though, most matches are just people spamming one class and running around like chimps as they do their own thing.

bots have been there since the stoneage, heck, i know some pc games in the 90s that could potentially support up to 63 bots, It's pretty much standard with most pc fps, With console fps, i'd say UT3 was the last game i heard of, And maybe Shadowrun

If you look at the amount of time it takes to program a game and the amount of time it takes to program a special AI that works with the multiplayer maps, its something that can be completely skipped to lower costs. Especially if you are making AI for a separate single player campaign. Really its a waste of time and money, especially with development costs at what they are. Bots are always a nice welcome addition, but if I had to choose something to axe out of a video game, bots would be the first thing on my list.

I agree. Playing with bots can be a ton of fun, especially if you're playing split screen at home with a friend or a sibling. Perfect Dark and Gears of War 2 are the two big ones that come to mind. I think Warhawk would be a lot better if it had bots.

Ten years ago, when I bought UT99, bots were a big selling point due to my iffy/costly internet connection, and lack of decent servers. Since those aren't issues anymore, it doesn't matter that much to me. In some games it really works well (like filling in AFK players dynamically in L4D), other games it makes servers a ghostown (there's nothing more annoying than seeing what seems to be a ton of semi-active servers, only to find them filled with bots). It's a "nice-to-have" at most, but I'd rather dev time spent elsewhere such as adding more game modes and maps.

Yes and no. They're able to complete objectives reasonably well, but they also don't do many of the things that real people do (mine farmers, switch classes dynamically to better suit what is going on). For the complexity of the game, though, they're great.

Bots are why i continued to play PD. I also loved how you could intergreate human players and bots online on PDZ. I dont think any console FPS has done this yet.

Perfect Dark Zero has bots in it, but yeah, bots should be a standard in FPSs these days, so I wouldn't always have to put up with those kids in Halo 3.

How are they last gen, Gears of war 2 and Killzone 2 had them, and I think Bungie said they can't use bots because of the code they use for enemies and allies.

In this online oriented generation bots just dont fit. Most games are designed to be played with other players in mind (gear,s KZ2, halo 3 ect ect) Bots are for people without internet connections or in XBL case silver account members.

Yes, yes they do. Perfect Dark, Timesplitters and Battlefield (the series) offered some stupendous multiplayer... and then allowed you to play it by yourself with CPU controlled enemies. I don't see why they cannot integrate it more often... not everyone out there has a stable, fast internet connection or wants to get a bunch of friends together who have incredibly wonky schedules.

By your logic, bots aren't "last gen" they are "last last gen." Xbox had online multiplayer last gen and Perfect Dark had bots. And how is a MP designed with human players in mind any different than one designed for bots? Its the same thing and adds more variety to the experience. Especially those Dark sims.

At this this point, bots should be standard for FPS games. I would love to see an improvment of AI which reacts and responds appropriately to your every move. Bots also benefit those who like to practice their skills, have no internet connection, or just want a quick session.

Xbox's MP was just gettin off the ground last gen. And Perfect Dark and Gears of war are the only MP game on the 360 that actually use them.

So bots are indeed a dieing breed. Games like Halo 3 and KZ2 are designed for humans players why else would guerilla implement a clan and badge system into the game ? Why would Bungie implement the file share feature If they didnt have a majority of human player in mind. As I said b4 bots are for two kinds of gamers: Those without fast enough iternet connections or Silver account members who dont want to upgrade to gold. I wouldnt be surprised is epic takes out bots in the next gears game.

I love bots. UT3 Deathmatch, one map, a handful of bots - a perfect way to kill 10 minutes. With a quick session like that, you'd waste half your time looking for a match.

uM nthey didn't include it because jumping is a key element in the game and it was impossible to have them program so that they could make good jumps. Games without jumps have bots mostly.

I dont get why people who like playing online keep saying playing with bots is pointless, what do u think you are playing against in a single player game,Humans? lol. play unreal 3 in TDM with bots on adept difficulty, then press V to give the command to a team mate bot to watch your back, then tell me what you think of bots again after that. AI has to evlolve as well as the games, Play Far Cry 2 single player game, its basically a 50 sq mile world filled with the most intelligent bots in fps right now. More games should have it, yes its cost more, but good games dont come cheap.

KZ2 does bots pefectly. They're implemented off/online and are smart! I hope more games include them and just aren't afterthoughts. Still, with KZ2..in order to utilize the full functionality of c|asses you'll have to play ranked games with humans. It would be nice if GG added ranking/leveling for offline Skirmish.

Sounds about right, for Halo that is. Jumping is a key mechanic to UT's gamplay and bots utilize it to great effect. But the jumping in Halo is different.

You must not play KZ2 much because the design of the maps and player controlled mechanics are perfectly executed online with bots. The point is games could/should have them. It's only a plus. What about Horde mode in Gears 2? Fun and challenging!

I personally dont have the internet capable for online play, so many FPS games i don't even get to use the multilayer function unless I go to a lan party with great internet /or with lots of lanners. Bots if done right are always a welcome sight and for me a person who almost always relies of single player, bots are a great thing to have!

oh and games like battlefield 2, there is something very fun playing 4 players VS 60 bots on assult maps
