It hurts me to post this. I pretty much hate Sony, and I hate the PS3.
However, we Wii owners need a running mate in it for the long haul, a Vice-President, if you will.
According to the data I'm getting now, it's not Microsoft.
Let me just say that I own a 360 and a Wii. Both are fantastic consoles. I have never played a PS3, but I just hate them. I love MGS and FFXII, but hate Sony and their expensive DVD player.
According to(don't stop reading)VGChartz, a flawed site, but one that isn't totally ignorant of overall sales data, and a site that DOES correct its date for official reports(see latest Japanese figures famitsu correction, this is happening:
This is inevitably due to the fact that the PS3 is now outpacing the 360 in sales in 2 of the 3 major regions: Others and Japan.
Note: I highly doubt the PS3 will actually pass the 360 anytime soon, but in this business momentum is everything, and foreigners just don't trust the 360 after the RRoD incidents.
Not to mention the previous gamespot story of how the 360 actually lost ground in hardware sales this year, which it should not have. Hardware is supposed to increase all the way to year 3, where it usually reaches its peak. This indicates that the 360 may have peaked early. Especially when you consider the fact that Halo 3 was released this year, yet it still lost ground.
Next, we have the Blu-Ray format war being won by Sony. Now people will be less reluctant to buy a Blue-ray player, and more reluctant to buy a HD-DVD drive. One of the main reasons, I believe, that the new SKU for the 360 was not announced and we didn't get a "big announcment" from Gates at the show.
Another supposed nail in the 360's coffin is its 2008 lineup, which is decidedly unspectacular compared to the 07 lineup on all fronts. Both Nintendo and Sony(more in a sec) have far superior lineups on paper, this year, than last, with multiple games in "system seller" status, such as:
Mario Kart Wii
SSB:Brawl
Metal Gear Solid 4
Wii Fit
Final Fantasy XIII(possibly 2keight)
Gran Turismo
We've all seen the poll on this very forum with the vast majority of people here claiming they will buy MGS4 on launch day. This game will spike sales. If sony is smart(they are not, they are dumb as a brick) they would give a small, price drop, just for show, maybe 30 bucks, and give people a reason to pick one up. However, this will inevitably lead to many MGS fans buying a PS3 eventually, as this is a system seller with legs to go along with it.
While there are a couple of good 360 games on the horizon, I admit, but many, like Halo Wars seem to be riding a franchise title, and the more interesting titles, like Alan Wake, well undoubtedly be overlooked for franchisers like Fable 2. None of the names, sans Halo Wars, are system sellers, however I do believe any title with a relation to Halo will be egerly consumed.
Speaking of Halo, Halo 4, the next killer app for the system, is year away. Halo 3's online features are far less significant than its predecessor, and have already been eclipsed by the multiplay CoD4, and Halo 3's sales were tremendous, however the legs on the product are practically non-existant. New Halo 3 gamers are buying used copies. Halo 3 is in a flat stalemate of sales at this point, which is basically saturation. SMG looks to be catching up with Halo 3 in the months to come.
This is not even to speak of the disgruntled 360 fans who bought bricked systems, who feel milked due to the porting of all their games to PC, with the downloadable content they paid extra for, or the lawsuits. Milking seem to be common Microsoft practice, considering the extra hundreds of dollars it costs to attain the parts the system should have came with, imo.
All in all, the 360 is a wildly popular system and it will lead in the US until at least July, and stay in second worldwide for quite a few years too come.
However, the momentum in the air isn't something a biased hater of both Sony and Microsoft can ignore. All the facts point to the likelyhood that in the next 3 years the PS3 will overtake the 360, thanks to the Others and Japanese markets(though i doubt we'll ever see an overtaking of software sales from the 360).
I'll keep my 360, I enjoy playing it in between my Wii gaming sessions, and my PC WoW epic adventures. However, I want to strongly urge the Sheep community to re-analize the picture, and pick the right runningmate. One that will be there for our inevitable victory lap.
Unfortunately, as far as I can deduce, that might just be the Playstation 3, which is admittedly, the first sturdy/decent piece of actual hardware Sony has designed, Sony, a company who hates its consumers even more than Microsoft and that designs its units to not only fail after a few months, but to destroy the media they are designed to play in the process.
Sony, a seedy past, but a bright future.
So cows....
Playstation Wii?
