Just a question. I notice that because of my limited time for gaming and budget. I only waste time purchasing top tier games 8.5 or better. Now that doesn't mean I won't buy my favorite series of games not matter the score. Resident Evil, Killzone, Gran Turismo, Zelda. Those are my any score goes games. Whats your take?

My take is you're missing out on some great games by only playing 8.5 and above.

i dont think people should do that i will nvr understand why people give so much power to gaming reviews , have u nvr purchased a game with a 9.0 reviews score and didnt like it? Metacritic is the only exception for me because its kinda gives a general consensus of what the games quality based on critics but at the same time what u may hate i may love , also you might agree with the minority and hate a certain game that most people like

I strongly suggest you read the reviews, ask other people including your friends, and check youtube videos, instead of relying on scores.

Mount and Blade got a 6.7 here, and its one of the greateast games ever made with huge mod support and the best medievel combat ever.

You should never rely on scores to make judgements of games, take it as a good advice.

I buy games I'm interested in, and 99.9% of the time I'm pleased with my purchase whether the game be rated a 4, or rated a 9.

no offence, but I find it pretty stupid. putting your faith in someone's opinion, just because some random guy on the internet says a game is good or bad therefore his opinion is absolute.

Buying ANY game solely because of a score is one horrible approach to gaming.

I tend to look at games that interest me, and then unless reviews say they are completely broken or the game just came out plain bad, then I will buy the game regardless of score. I don't always buy the high scoring games either if I don't have any interest in them.

Not all review scores are correct so you're missing out. But hey that's understandable; not everyone has an unlimited amount of money to spend.

I check different reviews (including user reviews), gameplay videos etc and if I think I'll like the game even if it gets a 5.0 on gamespot then I buy it. I think you're missing out on plenty of awesome games that are below 8.5

But you can't play everything! What are you supposed to do if you see two games and can only pay for one, or in this day and age, see 10 games and can only pick one? Flip a coin? I spend plenty of time looking at trailers and interviews of single games, but if the general consensus (metacritic is the way to go) is that a game is terrible, you don't need to play it youself to develop that same opinion. Have some faith in humanity that 100 objective people will be able to pick out what really is a pile of s***.

My favourite game of all time (Final Fantasy IX) is an 8.5 game on Gamespot, but near perfect to me. No, of course I don't buy games based on scores.

Yes, seeing the scores of anything that gets higher then an 8.5 on PS3 proves that....

I used to rent my games before I bought any. Now every place that rents games is out of business and Gamefly is a rip off. The best advice I can give is look at videos and talk to other gamers with similer tastes.

I buy and play games that interest me, whether or not they score highly or lowly has little to no effect on me. Even though Duke Nukem is widely hated by critics, I still really want to play the game.

That was because there was a bet associated with that (which The_Game21x was scared of lol). The game could have gotten a 5.5 and I still would have bought it and played it religiously.

There's no reason to base your purchase solely on someone else's opinion. At times, it can be a deciding factor, but should not be the only factor. By playing 9.0 games only, you will miss out on a lot of games and will most likely end up disappointed most of the time.

You make it sound like that you will like every game someone labels 9.0. Look at the spreadsheet with all of the current list of AAA games this year and try to tell me that you are interested in all of them.

You would have missed out on masterpieces like Shenmue, Majora's Mask, Monster Hunter Tri, Luigi's Mansion, Super Smash Bros., Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Link's Awakening and more if you did that. I advise against it heavily. Scores do not determine the worth of a game.

I won't ever stop "wasting my time" with games that get less than 90% on GameRankings, because there are a lot of games with average review scores lower than that I've enjoyed way more than most 90+ games.

If you don't have time for playing Videogames then playing only games rated 9 or higher makes sense. Fair enough play what games you wish if you only have limited time.

Pretty much

If you have ever in your life disagreed with someone else's opinion then you'll realize you shouldn't invest so heavily in review scores.

I mean it's a great idea to check out some reviews, watch some youtube videos, or talk to friends, but you should also rely on your own interests, and your own thoughts. You'll never find a game that's perfect for you if you are just listening to everyone else's opinion on games.

I don't care for scores all that much.

For example, all I needed to know in order to pre-order Red Faction: Armageddon was a footage of the magnet gun.

Magnet gun > the opinion of any "gaming journalist", any day.

I respect reviews but I don't live by them.

Just becuase gaming sites rate a game low doesn't mean you won't enjoy it and vice versa.

I would have missed out on a lot of great games and alltime personal favorites if I only went by review scores ... let alone the games that never get reviewed.

There is no such thing as top tier because reviews are subjective and never definitive.

My take is that relying on arbitrary scores will lead to regretful purchases and missing out on the very best personal experiences.

Edit: I should not have bought Crysis 2 (at launch) or have postponed my Portal 2 purchase for example. I blame myself for listening to reviwers who seem unable to get sick of games like CoD, a franchise that I've found uninspired and boring since MW, however

unless something gets trounced or is particularly well reviewed i never let score determine my purchases. I do a lot of my own research, listening to podcasts and reading blogs is a good way to get information and perspective on games.

I look at gameplay and how people who own the game feel about it. Screw scores can't trust em all the time.

9.0 onwhat sites, mags?

You will miss a lot of great games.

I enjoyed Crysis 2 although it got only 7, 7.5 from OPM and OXM respectively.

I don't buy more then 2ish games a year so I don't consider the number gamespot gives the games. I do more research and try to find a demo of the game before I buy it. I'm planning on getting Killzone 2 or Socom 4 and Disgaea 4 this year.

Honestly, take a look at the games, not the score, look at fan feedback, if your friend's played it, ask them why they liked/did not like it.
