I've heard many developers say that people at their companies check out metacritic scores for their games. Metacritic is respected in practically all fields that it operates in, and the videogame industry has accepted it. Metacritic > Gamerankings (although the scores are pretty much identical so it doesn't really matter imo). Aggregate sites > any one reviewer imo.
if any of you have taken any kind of BASIC statistic courses you will know that with more samples (reviews), the score will reach a value which it truly deserves, the population mean. One website review just isn't accurate enough. Of course statistics are based on facts while reviews are based on opinions but there are facts in opinions also. I think game rankings should count but no fanboy from system wars will accept it because alot of their precious game scores will go down the tube and lose credibility....especially ps3 games.
