I thought this was interesting. Edge/PC gamer reviewer said on his twitter that Nintendo is the cleanest when it comes to not paying for review scores and Eurogamer was the most legit site. I know Gamespot was involved in that Kane and Lynch scandal when Cnet took this site over. Do you think this could have anything to do with all the negative press Nintendo gets? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.neogaf.co...ad.php?t=495020 https://twitter.com/RichStanton Nintendo @DuncanSkuse: @RichStanton Who was best/worst of the 3 console makers? Nintendo - flawless. Early access, no interest in the score. @MDKII: @RichStanton Any other examples of good PR youve dealt with? Eurogamer is the best IMHO @josephjuson: @RichStanton What are the best websites? "They control everything @theubermod: @RichStanton Do publishers/platform holders 'pay' for covers? In either ad spend or access. Edge gave GTA IV [10] but the review didnt @CiaranMac90: @RichStanton Just give us the worst story on Future you have and get some rest! Im genuinely amazed that nobody has picked up on the fact that GTA4 got a 9 which became Rockstars much sought-after [10] in Edge. CVG. They deliberately misquote devs, and claim its a mistake after the hits @DilutedDante: @RichStanton worst games mag/site? Rockstar, without question. @LittleJuiceBox1: @RichStanton Who were the dodgiest PRs for doing deals (review scores etc)? Yes. Future will do anything to accommodate advertisers. @LewieP: @RichStanton have you witnessed any dodgy deals? PC Gamer asked me to take some photos of something very specific. A wall of concept art. I asked permission, and did so. Valve went nuts. This wasnt approved! Do you know what PC Gamers editor, Tim Edwards, did? He denied I had ever been asked to do it. Said PCG were merely the innocent recipient. Lied, in other words. **** Yes @helloimandrew: @RichStanton do review scores in future publications sometimes magically change before it hits the self Homefront, less obviously. Most is Driv3rgate @Tim__Lane: @RichStanton game that got most obviously dodgy reviews?

I would not be surprised at all if money changed hands rather often... this is business after all.

PS. You're supposed to be lvl 10 to make threads.... but since this isn't a troll thread, I'll not hold it against ya. :P

PPS. Also I can't really make sense of that Twitter Chat... maybe because I dont use Twitter, or perhaps I'm too old?

I enjoy the premise that one person can judge the professional integrity of hundreds of people, many of whom he's probably never worked with, much less met.

That explains why Pokemon always gets bashed by reviewers for "recycling" the series and why annual Call of Duty games always score so high.

"Hey guys I just got a fat check from Activision for giving Call of Duty a 10. I'm kind of a soulless whore aren't I?" Things people say to co-workers.

Only if you exclusively work with people who have no sense of ethics. Which SW likes to imagine describes the entire games press, but I'm not so convinced.

I love Eurogamer, they do a great job with Digital Foundry and I agree with them almost all the time with their reviews (which are very well written BTW). Eurogamer is, by far, the best gaming site ever when it comes to reviews or analysis. GameSpot has the best forums though :P.

It's kind of obvious really, Nintendo seems to be the most transparent of the three companies and Eurogamer shows a higher quality and less bias than most sites.

I don't really trust Eurogamer, I remember someone calling them out a while back. It was a former writer for Eurogamer and they fired him when he spoke out about their reviews being subject to ad bias. And Digital Foundry is just stupid.

I will try to find a link.

This explains all the negative press Nintendo gets by most mainstream review outlets then. Did he say which outlets and companies are the least trustworthy? Sorry, I am having problems following the Twitter convo in the OP :P

No.

Rab Florence wrote an article about other gaming journalists from different gaming outlets giving off the perception of being corporate shills. One of the journalist, Lauren Wainwright threatened a libel suit. So Eurogamer edited his article, due to how expensive libel cases are in the U.K. Rab quit after that.

Wait, they get bad press because they don't bribe people? That doesn't reflect very well on the quality of their products, does it.

To be honest, I don't think Sony is in a financial position to give bribes to anybody.

Yeah, apparently, if the default reaction is to bash them unless paid to say otherwise.

I know I wouldn't be a sheep on this forum unless I wasn't being paid good money to :x (And heavens know I can barely contain my frustration with them in spite of them as it is :P)

If you want to know which sites have been paid for by the industry, just search Diablo 3, go to it's Metacritic, and look at all the crappy sites that gave it AAA - some even going so far as to score it a perfect 10 when it didn't even have multiplayer on a game that requires internet connection!

Gamespot is guilty as hell once again, giving it an 8.5 when at best it deserved between a 5-6, and that's being very generous. Game review sites, MMA coverage sites... all crap. You can't get honest reporting from either, although Eurogamer does appear to be the best option for honest reviews.

Don't buy games at launch, hard as that may be. PC games usually have a few major bugs that take a couple days to get patched anyway (I'm looking at you, Fallout: New Vegas). Ignore the reviews from the major sites that whet your appetite with a bought AAA score and see what gamers have to say about the game over the first couple weeks. If I had done that with Diablo 3 I'd be $60 richer and a whole lot less frustrated with Blizzard...
