Game group is now closing what does this mean for gamestop and eb games , well it means there gonna make a killing, ever since the closure of game australia the price of gamestop inc stocks have trippled, and now with this new announcement what can we expect gamestop to do, although not huge in Asia gamestop has had the majority hold in retial games in the west. Importing games is also gonna be affected with new monopolisation.

what does this mean for your gaming console?
PS3 - still able to import games from Asia
Xbox - has lost a major PAL distributor

what are your thoughts ?

Umm Game closed down in Australia ages ago, and they're back in the UK market. Plus welcome to 2013 where we have this wonderful tool called "the internet" that lets us buy games.

In Ireland, Gamestop have been charging crazy prices (which I wouldn't dare buy). With HMV possibly closing, it will probably get worse since there wouldn't be any other store with a decent selection to physically buy games from anymore. I guess Amazon is the answer.

Video game specific stores are useless. The niche games sell out instantly since they order 2 copies in an entire city of 150k+, so there's no "wait a year for the price collapse to grab them at ~20% of its full price" kind of thing possible. And the selection is awful. No thanks.

Each country has it's own chain store for technology stuff and videogames. And there are smaller neibourhood stores as well, that can get you stuff you can't get in the big stores. For example, I live in southern Europe, and bought Persona 4 Golden about a month ago, without having to import or pay more than normal price for it.

gamestop is the only store around where I live so unless there is a great pre-order incentive (like Fire Emblem's artbook), I would buy it online

Any serious gamer in AU does, you would be a fool to pay EB games prices.

You need a credit card and Zavvi, pre-order with 10% discount, why give Gamestop 60, GS are a rip off

I get all my games at an online retailer(s). Often cheaper and delivered within a day. Not sure why people still go to Gamestop after all those shady practises. All stores have games these days.

Gamestop is far from the only retailer. There is this small company over here in the old world called Amazon ( Uk,De and Fr stores ) There are other companies as well such as HMV let alone oretty much every big store nowdays has a videogame section

Except online retail is great for the following reasons: a) access to a vast library - while lil record shops are fine and its fun to be able to discuss music with someone, obviously their inventory is somewhat limited by space. b) price - Not only does music tend to be alot cheaper online, a consumer can pick and choose what songs they want from an album. You no longer have to buy the filler on records which is far far too common. c) Convenience - hear a song you like or just remember that one you've been meaning to get for ages? Buy it instantly. d) Most importantly, indie music- no longer do bands need a label behind them to promote and distribute their music. Any ordinary guy/gal/band can upload his tracks. I'm not saying theres no place for highstreet stores. But if an industry doesn't move with the times it will die and the music industry as we know it came close for almost a decade.

Add to that not having to deal with ignorant employees , better return policy ( on amazon at least ) than most retail shops and the fact that i dont have to drive 60kmh to the closest big city every time i need to shop something

Not necessarily. Amazon have been known to close peoples accounts because they return too many items. And Im not talking hundreds here, maybe 5 or 6 high value items. Guess it comes down to whos reviewing your account at customer services, but once its shut down thats it. If you make another account, it'll get shut as well.

Its kind of a scary thought, I use amazon so much, would hate to be blocked from using them!

I like local used game/move/electronic stores. You can find some great deals in there and also find old gamecubes and stuff for like $20 or less. It's also fun to just browse a real store. Also you get to talk to real people who help you.

Ok here im going to answer all of your Q

For people asking for links to game closing, there isnt one, not all information is avaliable online, you have to be able to do your own deductive work, look at its stock trends and announcements, its recent forclosures internationally to cut down expenses, due to bankrupted sectors. its web site has been down for maintanence several times this past month, similarly to when game australia closed.

To those saying its buying new game stores, this is false how can it afford to buy new stores when i closed all the ones in Australia and sacked so many staff in ireland.

To those saying who cares doesnt effect me, yes ofcourse it does ur prices will go up due to a lowering of competitiveness, for instance u eat at maccas, hungry jacks closes down, maccas no longer has a maint competitor and it can now charge what ever it likes due to an enourmous increase in demand.

dont get me wrong online stores are great, but remember they have the power to close your account, many are registered in different contries such as amazon so if they dont comply with regulations in your country such as the americas of australia it wont matter, you as the importer may technically be powerless to enforce any warranty or return policy as these laws do not extend to other countries.
