I have currently gone back to some of my 2-3 year olds PS2 games, namely GT4, DMC3, .. and I realised how bad the graphics are, although they have good gameplay. I'm playing them on a 26in HDTV through component cable and progressive scan enabled in the game where available. I'm thinking of trading in all my old PS2 games which will have a potential sequel on the 360/PS3 so that I can enjoy them in full HD glory.

I believe many Wii titles have similar graphics to the PS2 albeit a few exceptions. How can some of you, who own both a 360/PS3 and a Wii bear those terrible graphics?

Maybe I should add some more clarifications with my gripe which focuses mainly on 3D games which try to be non-cartoonish and contains a ton of aliasing. Playing a NFS, FIFA, NFL, NBA or NHL game on the Wii is just not the same experience as playing it on the 360/PS3 which shows the sleak and vibrant graphics.

But the "OOh, That's pretty" effect that 360 and PS3 games have is nice. Not all Wii games have bad graphics though, you can ignore it. It's harder though if you go from a 360 or PS3 to a Wii as there is still a noticeable difference. Graphics can equal fun. But gameplay is still more important.

gameplay>>>>>>graphics. I still play games from the n64 era (early 3d games look a lot worse today than games with sprites). Maybe we aren't graphics whores? SMG and MP3 look significantly better than pretty much any game on the ps2 (barring Okami).

Because people don't play games for graphics.

 1. Hasn't the Wii's massives sales already proved this?
 2. Hasn't the PS2 being the weakest compared to the PC and others already proved this?
 3. Hasn't Gameboy beating Game Gear Proved this?
 4. Hasn't PS1 beating the Dreamcast and N64 proved this?
 5. Hasn't DS beating PSP proved this?

The majority of people really don't care about graphics. Simply put. Games aren't about graphics. They are about fun.

They aren't bad. The games are more of a bright, Vibrant variety, like SMG, and are very colorful. It's a nice change compared to the grey of realistic games. The games are supposed to look bright and cartoony, and this doesn't require much technical power.

Speak for yourself. Your opinion may be truefor kids, but I treat my games like I treat my movies, they have to immersive. I couldn't care less if I don't have any fun, I want a cinematic and immersive experience. I use to play games for fun back when I was like 12, I use to watch movies for fun too, but I've since grown up and art films with depth and philosophy interest me and games with character, drama and depth now over weigh fun. Thats why Mass Effect is my favourite game this year not Mario Galaxy. To each their own, your opinion of fun overriding all other aspects may have been true back when I was a kid but sadly games have evolved and so have gamers.

Peace.

Well Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy output some nice visuals. I wouldn't say the graphics on Wii are terrible just different. Look EVERYONE knows the Wii is not a graphical powerhouse nor does it market itself that way so why even question this? There are ugly games on ALL consoles even on PS3 and 360. Besides if the game's fun then I can overlook the grpahics I mean Manhunt 2 is no beauty contest winner, but I sure as hell have a blast when playing it on the Wii. We gotta look past all the glitz and the glam and find what's good with the consoles and games. If a game looks bad AND plays bad well that's another story.

The fun factor is the most important in a game, not graphics. Really, do people take issues with the graphics in Pong (which is a simple tennis game with very simple game sprites) or in Atari 2600 games when they were released?

Is it surprising that Super Mario Galaxy won GameSpot's "Game of the Year" while its contenders have superior graphics?

Completely agree here. I think you can't say that games are about fun and use it as some kind of blanket statement. This guy has the exact same view I have. I like playing games for fun sure, but games have evolved over the years and I expect more out of my games than just fun. I expect engrossing stories, intriguing philosophical questions, engaging dialogue, etc. I also treat my games like movies. Why? Because they cost more now. If games were 15-25 dollar products I may very well buy games like Mario without a hestitation, but I simply expect these qualities in games that cost upwards of 40 dollars.

What the hell are you going on about? I'm a grownup and enjoy immersive games and movies with the rest of them but South Park sure as hell isn't immersive yet I have just as much enjoyment in watching that when I watch March of the Penguins. This rebuttal fails and only shows your ignorant one sided views.

And to some point I am. However, there are still games out there that have everyone of those traits: Silent Hill, Suikoden (Water Margin basis), and many others. There are tons of games on the market that, while they don't have next gen itterations yet, have these traits.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy the good old Mario every now and then, just like how I pop out the old Steven Seagal in the DVD player every now and then, but my heart now lies with the works of Kieslowski, Kim Ki Duk, Antonioni and etc because their works are beyond fun they instill thought and provoke true emotions. This type of mastery of the kraft is what I look for in games nowadays. I enjoyed Mass Effect beyond Mario that exact reason.

My opinion may be true for kids? lol. No, my opinion is true for the majority of people who play games and who have played games in the past.

I hope your post is sarcastic I mean seriously. The number one reason to play video games will always be "Fun" Sounds to me like you need to go read a poke, watch a broadway show, or see a movie instead of gaming.

That's fine. There's no harm in enjoying that level of art and entertianement, but if all you do is pine for that level you might miss out on some plain old fashioned fun games (or movies) that way. I'm just saying set the standard a bit lower :)

Thanks for agreeing with me, remember change takes time. Games will elvole like every other art form to date, more people like us will emerge in time.

how can console gamers bare those terrible graphics? i mean anything below crysis levels is just completly crap. uncharted...pathetic. gear....painful on the eyes. every other game released in history....like totally ewww. we as gamers should stand up and say "only the best graphics are acceptable....anything else and dont even bother". consoles should just be stopped, there not cutting edge enough....stupid little toys. there killing this industry and holding it back.

[/sarcasam]

imho there fine. mario galaxy look lovely imho, as does MP3. as long as the games are good, i dont really care though. ill still play games like baldurs gate because there just brilliant games.

Games aren't movies, and Mass Effect isn't "mastery of the craft." Appreciating games primarily for their cinematic value is like appreciating novels primarily for their illustrations.

Engrossing stories, philosophical questions, engaging dialog that all contributes to the overall experience of....guess what....FUN. You wouldn't be enjoying those aspects of a game if they weren't fun and appealing. When I say a game is fun it just doens't mean strictly fun as to gameplay.

Ex. There are many reasons other the Gameplay a game such as Suikoden or FFVI can be fun. Characters, story, dialogue ect. That all contributes to how much fun a game can be.

Thats what they said about film, or the flickers they use to call it. But now film is considered a arc of the arts. I embrace change. Fun games will always exist as will fun movies, but now there is market for more.

I see, I thought you were seperating fun from gameplay and enjoyment from these other afforementioned traits. Yes, characters story and dialogue all add to the enjoyment and "fun" of a game to many people in some capacity.

How can some of you, who own both a 360/PS3 and a Wii bear those terrible graphics?

radiocreed

It's easy when you are a REAL gamer and not just some casual, bandwagon jumping poser. If you actually cared about gaming then graphics shouldn't bother you. But if bad graphics is all it takes to ruin gaming for you then just admit you aren't a real/hardcore gamer and as far as I'm concerned, the opinions of posers has zero merit and they shouldn't even be posting on forums meant for gamers who care about gaming.

The real question is how I can continue to bear these terrible threads.

Don't try to condescend like some "real gamer" whose opinion is the ultimate say so for video games. Many people enjoy video games for many different reasons, and your reasons aren't the only ones. I enjoy a good book, and I've always loved the ability to interact with a story. I simply expect great stories and indepth dialogue from my time as a PC gamer. Had I grown up on consoles maybe I would be a little more forgiving, but thats just how it is. Don't get me wrong, there are console games out there that have the quality of movies and books. (IE silent hill and suikoden). These are games that I greatly enjoy. Sorry I don't kowtow to your beliefs, but thats just how it is.

I've been gaming for 25 years starting with the 2600. With every generation that's gone by I am wow'ed by improvedment in graphics less and less. The first time I saw Super Mario Bros. after years of playing 2600 games, I was floored. When Nintendo brought their SNES display consoles to my local mall and I saw their 16 bit games for the first time, I was extremely impressed, but not quite as much as that first time I saw SMB. And this continued on and on, until we got to the PS2 and I looked at it and said, "hmmm yeah that's nice." In my mind, I've hit the point where graphics just don't matter that much. The bar has been raised as high as I need it to be. People can throw the word "immersive" out there all they want, but ultimately graphics end up being the last thing that matters as far as what I need to enjoy good game. When I've got excellent controls, a compelling story and/or motivation, and an appropriate soundtrack I'm already immersed.

I agree. Though I would use the term enjoyment over fun. I'll give an example with 2 of my favorite games this year

1.-Mario galaxy-This is my favorite game this year because it is pure fun to play. Some of the levels and things you do in that game just put a smile on my face when I played it. One of the most pure fun games I've ever played

2.Mass Effect (this is my #3 game this year, after SMG and bioshock)-I enjoyed this game immensly. Both for the "fun" of the gameplay and the awsomeness of the story. I would still have had fun playing it if it had a Gears level story. What pushed it into my all time top 20 was the awsomeness of the story and dialog. But if that story and dialog were on top of Ninjabread Man quality gameplay, I wouldn't have cared as much.

Yeah but the underlying question in the OP was how can people bare with terrible Wii graphics and I stomped that arguement to the curb. The majority of gamers simply don't care. I gave out systems with examples. To be honest the demographic that cares about graphics on such a level that they wouldn't play a game or couldn't bare a game is a real minority.

People play games for fun. That is the driving force of why people game. Now what you deem as fun is up to you. But the primary focus on games is playing such as the word game implies.

So....why do you play games, again?

The way I see it, games are no good for anything but dumb entertainment. The industry hasn't grown up at all in the last twenty years. If anything, it's de-evolved, especially in story, character, and thematic depth. Almost every developer treats their games like their own personal teenage wet-dream fantasy, not as a serious medium to carry serious discussion. Mass Effect is one of the worst offenders.

Funny how you deride Steven Seagal movies, when even "critically acclaimed" video games today are exactly like Steven Seagal movies, with only a very, very few exceptions.

gameplay>>>>>>graphics. I still play games from the n64 era (early 3d games look a lot worse today than games with sprites). Maybe we aren't graphics whores? SMG and MP3 look significantly better than pretty much any game on the ps2 (barring Okami).Zaxro

OMG i agree, all the spirite games (especilly doom) look way better then early 3d games but I must say bravo gameplay over graphics for me but n64 games just look so bad that I get a headache
