Graphics, graphics, and more graphics...The focus these days is on who can make the prettiest game. Although pretty games are cool, I would easily take mediocre graphics and some great new gameplay mechanic innovations...Anways, enough with my rant...

What games of 2009 will be innovative, pushing gameplay mechanics in a whole new direction?

Alan Wake might. hmmm. What about Star Wars:The Old Republic? It's promising to add some real innovations to the MMO genre.

Alan Wake, Dawn of War 2, and Section 8 (From the sound of it so far.).

Though Halo 3: ODST will really change up the Halo formula and give it a cool new direction.

I just heard about that game today, the trailer looked interesting enough to put it on my watch list. Do you know what it is about?

IGN has a preview of it and it sounds really cool.

Like a mix of Halo, CoD4, and Battlefield. And with a drop-pod spawning system. Lots of other info in the IGN preview, it sounds awesome :D

Dang I only saw the cinematic trailer from gametrailers so far and was hoping it would be an action game, I'm sad to see it is just another FPS... There are not enough action games this gen at all.

After Prince of Persia, and other so-called "Action" games this gen, I've almost given hope on the genre.

And maybe a new face could bring life to the genre. We need to build on other genres, not concentrate on one.

As a PS3 owner I must say: I really doubt it, so don't hype KZ2 that way.

I can't think of any games with innovative gameplay tbh.

have you heard about the motion control while sniping? basically instead of holding down a button to keep steady, you need to hold the controller steady, thats just one example of killzone 2's motion controls

Omg. "some great new gameplay mechanic"? thats going to be "A;LSDKFJ" hard! The gamers on this place are terrible. So many times I hear "too repetitive:cry:, to repeitive:cry:, 2 repeatitive:cry:" New gameplay mechanic is in that category. If theyre so smart and can tell the difference of the two, maybe they should tell devs what wouldnt be repetitive so we can all be happy.

That's as innovative as driving vehicles with the sixaxis... and for the record, I don't like that at all. Sixaxis was a needless gimmick IMO.

Isn't that just improving on all of the innovations of Quantic Dream's previous game? I haven't heard of Heavy Rain doing anything new...

empire is changing alot form previous total war games. proper naval combat that goes into a crazy amount of detail. thats going to require a bit of thinking on the players part to deal with. simply building a load of boats and rushing the enemy isnt going to work too well so new strategies will need to be developed there. the tactics for land battles will also be very different from previous TW games. the effects of guns will be felt accross the battlefield. so new thinking will be required there also.

If I may ask, what innovation does Alan Wake brings? I've only seen bits of it, but doesn't seem very groundbreaking. What am I missing?

i don't get how the sixaxis sniping is going to work, i mean its not really much of a challenge to hold your controller still is it? the sensitivity must be insane for it to have any effect

any way on topic, alan wake and heavy rain from what ive seen.

I have high hopes for "I Am Alive" and Splinter Cell: Conviction... different takes on action/adventure style games, both with reworked game mechanics.

Apparently the sixaxis snipering works VERY well, it gives you tiny movement for that extra accuracy..when the stick gets abit to sensitive or your movement was to much, etc. Same goes for activation mines, etc....they say its the best use of the sixaxis motion. We shall see.
