What are your top 3 gameplay mechanics this gen made popular, that you want to carry over to next gen?

  1. Destruction (After playing Bad Company 2, I expect things to fall apart in FPS's :P)
  2. Over the shoulder, shoulder switching (IDK what game started this, but Uncharted and Infamous do it, and it is a great mechanic)
  3. Increased mobility (Parkour has been all over the place lately, and I think overall it is a good thing. I am not saying every game needs parkour, but increased mobility with the environment can make for more intense and realistic experiences)

I like good/evil choices, cover systems, and destructible environments, they're all little touches that make a big difference.

Destructible envrionments are awesome!

I like having increased mobility.

Good/evil choices are nice (love it in KOTOR).

Over the shoulder is cool.

The only one I don't like is cover systems. I would rather take cover in my own way than press a button to do it. I hope it isn't as popular next gen.:(

Tough, as much as I like the cover system in Uncharted, I hated Gears of War, so I don't think I can pick that.

Destructible environments are great, but the game then revolves around destructible environments.

Over the shoulder cam, is the same thing as cover, loved it in Uncharted, hated Gears of War as a game, so its not a system that made the game.

I LOVE choices, but I don't like how they're black and white good or evil. ME2 did it best, but I don't think any game I've ever played has got it right yet.

Increased mobility is AWESOME! Mirror's Edge was awful, but the parkour is the only reason why that game was decent. Assassin's Creed and Uncharted, awesome platforming. I look forward to Crysis for this reason. So increased mobility, you are the best gameplay trend this gen. Congrats!

That would be THE best game ever. Probably the only thing that could've made JC2 better in terms of gameplay!

Let me clarify the over the shoulder mechanic I am talking about. I am not saying over the shoulder in general, I am talking about the mechanic where you can switch from the right to left shoulder and the other way around as well. I expect every TPS to have that now and when I play one that doesnt it bothers me :P.

Mirros Edge is great :(.

It was cool, but made most land vehicles useless. If it wasn't a heli or a plane there was no point driving anything really.

I love the cover system used in games like Gears of War and Mass Effect, but they are sort of flawed. Don't get me wrong, they are very realistic compared to a FPS game like Halo where you just run, jump and shoot, but the part that gets me is that how do you know where that ENEMY is when your EYES are not looking at them while you are at cover. Is it Sound? Jack (From Gears of War)? I don't know.

Mass Effect 2 did a great job on the part where Shepherd would occasionally peak out of cover (even when you are still in cover) to seek where the enemies are, but I find this unrealistic when when a bullet would go right through his/her head when she/he would peak out and it would not be considered as a hit.

This whole issue doesn't ruin the experience, though. It just feels like a plothole on how these main guys and gals in the games suddenly harness the power of the sixth sense. *ahem* the invisible camera that tells them where the enemy is located while they are behind cover.

Increased mobility I guess, but at the same time I feel somewhat slow and grounded compared to how I was in Quake and so on. Destructable environments are also good.

I do not like Good/Evil choices (I find them tacked on in too many cases and doesnt really add anything to the game), over the shoulder (I often find my accuracy and perception somewhat reduced) and cover systems (prefer going into cover manually).

Didn't knights of the old republic have good/bad systems last gen? And I'm pretty sure destruction based environments existed last generation too in some fighting games.

Yes it did. I said made popular though. I don't think either of those things became really popular, esepecially destruction (and no doubt this complex) last gen. They were there, but what made them popular were games this gen. Just like regenerative health became popular last gen, probably because of Halo, even though I know there was some game that used it before Halo.
