Are there any games that have reputations of being best ever, but for you they are one of the worst, or simply bad or downright way below average?

I have to conclude this topic that there are such games for me, mainly:

  • Counter-strike
  • Resident Evil 4

What are yours?

Not one of the worst or in anyway a bad game (in fact, a great game still), but... SMG2. It's really more of an expansion pack than a true sequel (although I didn't believe it before).

This is not going to be popular.

The Grand Theft Auto series bores the shit out of me. I can't stomach to finish them.

Not saying their bad games at all. Just not for me.

Oh yeah, I used to play them all, beginning from the very first, top-down GTA 1, I loved GTA 2, GTA 3 and Vice City were okay - I've also played them uncritically, I very much liked San Andreas, and I've also played Chinatown Wars a bit, but beginning from GTA 4, I lost my interest completely. What's more, I enjoyed a game like Crackdown a lot more than GTA 4. I hadn't even played GTA 5, even if it's better than 5, and I won't even try to.

I think the collecting aspect and stuff does it for me in a open world game. Building up my character and stuff. It's a huge draw for me.

GTA is more like a cinematic ride. I like to feel my character becoming stronger out of my own accomplishments. I know. Go play an RPG right?

This is just how I feel in the matter. Not saying they're bad games at all.

1. When people say MGS3 had the best story in the series. Great gameplay, but I thought the story was ass.

2. I think Ocarina of Time is ok, but just can't see why people think it's the best Zelda.

3. Can't get into the Witcher series because Geralt's voice actor just ruins the game for me.

4. Dark Souls 2 was disappointing. Most of the bosses were forgettable and the NPCs were boring. Still a good game though.

All I can think of right now. Don't really hate any of the games...just have a different opinion.

God of War series.

Maybe its because i love RPGs, but im not really a fan of aimless, mindless, repetitive combat.

I mean the first few hours of the HD collection was fun......same with GoW3.

After that it was tedious and boring.

Great voice actor for Kratos though :P

No, old Resident Evil games really are just the worst. It has nothing to do with when they released, as the original Silent Hill on PS1 still manages to be a legitimately scary, great game even now. Old Resident Evil games are pure tedium, completely devoid of horror and compelling gameplay.

More games that are praised despite being terrible:
-The Last of Us
-The Gears of War series
-Everything made by Bioware
-The Assassin's Creed series
-The God of War series
-Almost every FPS

That's why I liked Crackdown so much. It didn't have an excuse for a plot. There wasn't any. Any information on your missions was delivered on the fly. The most interesting aspect of the game was constant improvement via collecting orbs which enhanced your abilities to superhuman levels and you were encouraged to explore as much of the gameworld as you possibly could. So, in a nutshell, your experience was totally devoid of irritating distractions and all that was left was the very essence of a successful sandbox formula.

There's probably loads I Can't think of,

Maybe MGS2 seem's to get a lot of praise, but if you play 1 and then play 2, you realize that the whole game is basically a carbon copy of the first down to the battles, and the fact that in the game, Solidus even says to raiden that this was all a test and he tried to convey what happened at shadow mosses in this game, and that for me just made me go, wait so this game you basically just used the idea's from the first and made this, not very original are you.

and of recent years, as much as I enjoyed the story, I just think GTA5 suffers from an identity crisis, I mean it's meant to be a crime game, and yet the best activities you can do are golf tennis yoga and a triathlon, I mean I get maybe the golf and maybe tennis but yoga just o i dont know, and triathlon just has no reason to even be there it makes no sense, it's like they sat in a room to discuss what was going to go into the game as far as mini games, completely forgot that this was a crime game and someone went o I've always wanted to make a triathlon mini game lol and just shoved it in, where were the shops to rob from properly instead of glitching the game, where were the heists??? I mean the proper ones, because all i saw and was involved in 1 actual heist, it just bugs me how much of a eye candy game it was with not much to do in it, which was actually focused on what genre is, and there for I see GTA5 as having an Identity Crisis.

Battlefield Series - People seem to bang on about Battlefield being superior to Call of Duty but overall I find Battlefield to be miles behind the Call of Duty series. Nothing more than flash graphics with horribly broken game play which seems like it will never even be fixed.

Grand Theft Auto 5 - Like @bezza2011 said the game had a massive identity crisis and didn't know if it wanted to be a crime based game or a life simulator. Most the mini games feel like they were put in just because and the lack of crime based mini games just ruined the overall immersion.

Halo series. The games are good, don't get me wrong. But I don't see the god state they are hyped up to be.

GTA V. Again, the game is good, but some people on here imply it's the best GTA ever because of sales. There are some way better GTA games out there and GTA V was definitely not worth the wait.

I usually think that the highly acclaimed games that I don't like particularly are mostly ok or average. I rarely think they suck, I often see them more like overhyped average games. There are a few exceptions though.

Mostly all sequels that utilize the same engine can be viewed as expansion packs. Nintendo fans (not saying you here) always attempt to claim each Mario or Zelda iteration is fresh in what game play changes it introduces, so much so that even though it's the same franchise it could be considered a brand new IP, yet for some reason SMG 2 is often viewed as just an "expansion pack". What's so similar from SMG 1 to 2, yet is so drastically different in every Zelda, Mario Kart, Kirby, or any other Nintendo franchise that continually arrives, that so many fans will hold up as examples that Nintendo keeps their games from suffering redundancy?

Why is SMG 2 the exception here? There doesn't seem to be any degree of discernment or equality in this criticism vs. the advocacy and defense of Nintendo re-using the same IPs over and over with improvements, that IMO, are the definition of expansion packs. I find many of the game play alterations and suits in SMG 2 add just as much novelty between SMG 1 and 2 as say, found between SMG 2 and 3D World. Or Mario Kart 7 vs. 8.

Just seems SMG 2 is the outlier for some strange reason...

Ocarina of Time. It has flaws that were noticeable back in 1998 and thr remake just made them more obvious, along with showing what an aged game it is.

GTA, but I usually judge people on what they think of GTA. If you think V had good story or gameplay, lol at you.

Red Dead is boring tripe .

-Uncharted 2 of course. I've mentioned about a million times why I think just about every single aspect of this game was terrible.

-Super Mario Galaxy was also nowhere near the praise it got. It was a decent game, but I felt it played everything far too safe. Super Mario Galaxy 2, however, was the game the first should have been. It was far more creative and risky with its ideas. It had a far bigger impact on me due to its originality. It's most likely one of the most constantly inventive games ever made.

SMG2 feels like an expansion pack because of a few reasons. 1. Nintendo rarely does direct sequels and has never done a direct sequel to a 3D Mario game.

2. They remove the beautiful hub world from SMG and replace it with a boring map. This kind of cheap replacement makes it feel like an expansion pack.

3. Same graphics as the first game. Same basic mechanics and worlds as the first game. Heck even the story is a strange sequel but not sequel but sort of reboot of the first mario galaxy game.

And since the levels just feel like more imaginative versions of what we saw in the first game it didn't feel like it used any new assetts. Merely things left over from SMG. So SMG2 feels like a gigantic expansion pack.

OP only made this thread so he could troll Resident Evil 4 aka the greatest game of all-time. Nice try OP, you were close but I see through your charade.

ummmmm

- Pretty much any old PC RPG besides System Shock 2
- Red Dead Redemption
- Chrono Cross
- The Witcher
- Radiant Silvergun
- Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
- Any Kirby game
- Banjo Kazooie or any N64 collect-a-thon platformer is trash

Resident Evil 4

hated that game with every fiber of my body from the very moment I played it on my GameCube. I remember splitting the cost to buy it with a friend and as soon as we finished it I traded-in for DMC3 and that was the greatest investment I have done in my entire life. My friend was pissed though because he loved R4 but it was clearly a dumbed down experience compared to the prior games.

People probably liked it because it was the first RE game in the series that they could beat with their short attention span issues because the only good thing about that game was the over the shoulder camera and graphics. But DMC3? Now that was a game to remember for a life time... Too bad Capcom killed the franchise just like they did with Resident Evil, Mega Man, Breath of Fire, etc. They really are bunch of idiots... The same with Square and the rest though, it seems this is a Japanese thing these days.

uncharted 2 is superior to uncharted 3 .

as for resident evil, you have to really dig deep because the old games did provide lots of fun back in the day.sure, the old re games are outdated and the new re games dont really scare me but it really depends on what you like.the old re games had really good puzzles and whatnot while the new re provide much more satisfying combat.

ive played every re game except re3 and re6 and in my opinion, code veronica was my favorite followed by re4,re1,re5 and re2

This is not going to be popular.

The Grand Theft Auto series bores the shit out of me. I can't stomach to finish them.

Not saying their bad games at all. Just not for me.

The only GTA games I ever thought were particularly amazing were Vice City and Chinatown Wars. None of the console versions has ever really surpassed Vice City, and have instead gone for the bigger is better mentality, which I personally dislike; in Vice City, I could know where I was going without having to constantly look at the mini-map, and it also was the only GTA that I'd really say had a good music selection (all the new ones are filled with shitty rap songs).

Oh, and Assassins Creed gets my vote. I can't stand the franchise. It has some of the worst controls imaginable, and yet never gets knocked for it. I also despise the franchise because it's diverted Ubisoft's attention away from the Prince of Persia franchise, from which AssCreed was born from. Prince of Persia (excluding the cel-shaded piece of shit one) was a thousand times the franchise that AssCreed will ever be. I fear we'll never see another 3D Prince of Persia ever again. Good night sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!
