Yeah this was covered during the SteamOS talks. All the features of SteamOS (regarding Steam), like local streaming, are coming to the regular desktop client as well
i believe valve said their would be different "steam boxs" ranging in prices
I think they come out with a $50-100 version that you could link up to your current pc via internet that way you could be playing your games in ANY ROOM not just where your pc is set up

Yea. We all knew it was coming, we were just waiting for the form it would assume.

erm yea they will, and our laptops ect can already do that with this new addition
Steam is improving so much, I love it. I'm in the family sharing beta now and I think it's absolutely awesome. Steam leaves the competition in the dust.
I just wonder though if this in-house streaming will have any image quality loss, like Onlive had when streaming games from huge server farms.
@R4gn4r0k: It shouldn´t have much quality loss. After all it´s a local network when streaming rates are about 300 mbps (megabit per second) vs 10-30 mbps of internet streaming, in case of WiFi. And LAN connecttions via physical cable should have no quality loss at all as data transfer speed is about 100 megaBYTE per second there (arround 800 mbps)
@uninspiredcup:
Wonder if this will work with android tablets.
It's possible, but I don't see any incentive for Valve to make it happen.
Actually, I think Gabe himself said that was something they were going to try and do. Probably via some app on the android store.
@R4gn4r0k: In the future, I foresee dedicated streaming boxes that will be arround 150$, cheaper than normal consoles as their only function would be connecting HDTV to either local PC or to Internet Streaming service.
And when Smart TVs become a standard, you won´t even need that anymore as smart tvs will be including streaming boxes by default.

Incentive would be to steal a piece of pie from Vita and 3ds. So it´s more than probable.

I'm very interested to see what the future holds. Streaming had a bit of rough launch, because the technology just wasn't there yet, but it has a bright future.

That would be pretty freaking sweet. ;)

That's what I figure as well.
How long before steam outsells xbox and Ps console gaming.... I give it one generation.
The Steam console won't outsell them since it's only an alternative to other methods of getting Steam, and PC gaming as a whole.
PC will still be the #1 platform for gaming though, as always.
I'm looking forward to this. Unlike via internet, via a local network should mean that things like input lag should be minimum. It should be fun to play games on my laptop while lazily sprawled on bed. Wonder whether it'll be possible to use the feature with games added as non-Steam applications, though. Probably not.
