Hello friends,

In this thread we discuss about plenty of different video games that are ruined going through open world.

so friends, there was a time when any franchise came to console development, it got ruined. now times has change and it shift towards open world. any game today that gone open world got ruined. because open world games are just copy and paste plus having less and less variety and become boring because all you do is travel from point A to point B. so theres plenty of games that were linear before, developers decide to make open world and then they got ruined.

lets take an example

Batman Arkham: The Original Arkham Asylum was by far best in series and once it went open world. it lost all magic. arkham city was inferior sequel in every way then arkham origins and knights failed. it was better as more focused linear game.

Metal gear solid 5: MGS was never about open world yet its one of those game that should have been better as linear game. it become open world, it feel like far cry, too empty and too bland. thus become boring.

The witcher 3: Although its univerally liked game but imo its just another open world game but with better lore and universe. TW2 was better because it was not open world and was more linear focused game.

Rage 2: Not that Rage 1 was kind of amazing. but it should have been improved into what Rage 1 left instead bethesda decide to outsourced it to another bland open world developer who made another bland open world game. another game would have been good as linear.

Ghost Recon: Once a Great realistic hardcore Tactical shooter now another open world third person game. need to say more??

Mafia 3: First Mafia is easily one of the greatest game of all time. amazing game. perfect story, amazing chapter based level design. even mafia 2 was good despite not as good. but Mafia 3 going full open world killed what make mafia good and turn into another GTA clone.

there can be more and more. but they are examples.

so my friends, what this generation taught me that, not everything need to be open world. most of games that were linear before going open world are just ruined.

I will be so mad if ubisoft decide to turn splinter cell into open world. it would kill the franchise even more so than conviction and blacklist does.

so my friend, what games you think are ruined because of going open world? lets discuss.

@ghosts4ever:

Your list just about covers it. Though I strongly disagree with you on Batman Arkham. As a superhero game, it makes for a perfect premise to exist in an open world.

Batman Arkham and Witcher being on this list is a total joke.

It's not as if any of the previous witcher games were linear. They were just smaller open world segments you could visit and revisit. Arkham City was a much improved sequel. You're Batman. Why wouldn't you want to fly about the city? It still had enclosed areas and scenes, but it was connected via an awesome open world. I don't discount the idea of open world games not being suited to certain franchises but come on.

@DocSanchez: Agreed. Arkham City was way better than Arkham Asylum. I have no idea why people push that narrative.

In my opinion, they don't like open world games and that was a prominent example of a game going more open. The original Arkham was pretty open too. It didn't have traditional levels. City was just that, but much, much bigger and more free. Why wouldn't you want that?

Ghost Recon was ruined after GRAW.]

Wildlands just dropped even pretending to be a tactical shooter.

@DocSanchez: It's only right imo. It just feels more like you're Batman when you're swinging and gliding around Gotham City in it's entirety.

Batman Arkham isn't open world. Open World games have the forth dimension known as Time which is completely irrelevant in Batman games.

By that logic you should call every Zelda game before BOTW as open world because those had pretty big environments and had day/night cycles.

Metro Exodus comes to mind.

And also (I know I'm in the minority here), Zelda BotW. I know most people love the open world nature of it, but it became a huge turn-off for me. I played it for a good 10-15 hours, and it felt like I spent atleast 50% of that time running around empty fields. I much prefer the other Zelda games, which felt alittle more focused (can't wait for Links Awakening).

I think Mirror's Edge Catalyst was much worse for going openworld. I would've much preferred linear levels with multiple paths.

I would like to see Need for Speed ditch open world for a while. That's not what's ruining the series, but would be a nice change of pace.

As for the game's in the OP

I think City might be better then Asylum, haven't played it in a long time though. Knight was my least favorite ofcourse but that's more due to the overuse of the batmobile.

I don't think MGS5 was ruined by going open world . It was certainly different from previous games in the series and certainly could've been better, but the gameplay was great. It might've been better if it were more linear - but ruined is a bit much.

Rage 2 seems pretty cool . It's relatively short thankfully, unlike most open world games. I plan to check it out one day. I bet it comes to gamepass. Better as a linear game, possibly. Only played the demo for the first one and wasn't blown away.

I had fun with Wildlands, but i can see why fans of the older games dislike it.

I think I prefer Witcher 2 to 3... but wouldn't say it was ruined.

Yeah, Ghost Recon Wildlands is one of the biggest examples of ubisoft fatigue for me:

-big empty open world

-laundry list of things to do, yet it's all the same

-traversal is pretty terrible, in this case driving

-dumb AI

Yes. When you need to be LEVEL 10 to throw a flash-bang, something has went horribly fucking wrong.

Arkham City was an objectively better game. The only thing Asylum did better was "atmosphere", but that entirely subjective.

The Arkham series got going too quickly, and blew it's load before it could become a staple in the industry. WB pushed too hard to franchise it, and it suffered. That's what "ruined" it.

I strongly disagree with the false equivalence some in the gaming community have been trying all gen to draw between the prominence of open world games this gen, and the dominance of linear corridor shooters of last gen. I'll take open world any day of the week.

The two eras are in no way analagous. Last gen was a far, FAR darker time.

Also, lifelong Metal Gear fan. If it werent for the shenanagins reguarding chapter 3 and episode 51, MGS5 would be my personal favorite game of all time.

Personally Zelda BOTW. I like the game and probably spend around 70-80 hours in the game but damn world is so empty and fuk these ubisoft towers. loved the sense of wonder though.

I like open world games, when they're competently done anyway. As tech gets better, I think a lot of devs in the AAA space are going to get away from the old school shoebox level design and just plant you in a large space of their making. Some games did waste their use of an open world though like, LA Noire, the Mafia games and FFXV (even though I still kind of liked the game). Otherwise, I like the exploration aspect of them.

last gen was definitely worse, i agree as many franchise got ruined but this gen the biggest problem is open world fatigue and very few games in quantity due to high development time.

PC GRAW was actually good and was still tactical/realistic.

console GRAW was gears of war with terrorist. then series got ruined and ruined further.

Defo MGS5, should have stayed linear, I had such high expectations, got severely burned.

Edit: And Metro only got better by going semi open, the previous games were a bore.

MGS 5 easily I'm in the minority but I'm actually glad Mirror's Edge Catalyst went open world if they ever make a 3rd game they need to expand on it and bring more combat options like Melee weapons.

Many. Devs think their games sound cool if they're "open world" and use it more as a selling point rather than anything else. It makes the game sound large and like lots of effort has been put into it. It's usaully the opposite though. An open world is instead, most of the time, a boring uninspired world riddled with checklist copy/paste tasks, making the game boring after just a few hours.

the 3 things that turn me off games these days.

1. Open world

2. Crafting system

3. Skill tree

Usually these 3 things are tacked on and ruin the gaming experience.
