Games that were actually worth the long wait.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Switch)

Four gens later, here we are and we have one of the best platformers NOT Mario on the Switch. Still pure Kirby fun in the third dimension.

Still wish it was done sooner. Your choice?

Team Fortress 2 was in development when 56k was the norm.

Looked nothing like its final version.

@nintendoboy16: halo infinite. The jump from linear to open world was a big one for the halo franchise. Not to mention, the grappling hook is revolutionary.

For me, the wait for Witcher 3 was totally worth it.

Could probably list a good number. A few off the top of my head would be:

- Street Fighter IV

- Breath of the Wild

- Tears of the Kingdom

- Devil May Cry 5

- Monster Hunter World

- Final Fantasy VII Remake

- Resident Evil 2 Remake

- Resident Evil 4 Remake

- Forza Motorsport

- Starfield

- Elden Ring

- Halo: Infinite

Even though it isn't out yet, and might not be out for a long long time...Star Citizen

*waits for laughter to stop*

Yeah yeah yeah I know, but honestly...really enjoying the early access/alpha period. It's fun checking in every couple months, seeing the progress, playing a dozen hours or so, then moving on to another game until SC is updated again.

They can take their time.

Yeah, I remember those initial TF2 publicity haha. I was actually really excited for that game.

Glad they changed directions with the game and went away from a "milsim" aesthetic and to something a bit more cartoonish and light, yet probably more competitive, too.

When did they actually start development on that? Soon after Original Sin 2 came out?

Can pretty much just play Day Of Defeat if after that.

One of the clever things Valve done that helped put them on the map, the opposite of what they do now, they bought up mod teams and modders games. Recruiting them directly as developers under them.

Even later in stuff like Episode 2, notice the combat is a step up for the more tepid nature of the OG Halflife 2, that's due specifically to hiring the Adam Foster who was (ironically) critical of Valve.

Sad how things have developed from that kind of symbiotic relationship to companies now seemingly largely hostile.

Okay, i will let Starfield go for a sec.🥱

I guess, if you look at the last time a new entry from the series came out, it has to be BG3, but because i have never played the first two games, its not like i was "waiting." I assume Elden Ring would win this award, but at the same time, its Godsoft, one year or five years, you know their game is gonna be incredible, so i don't even want them to be included cuz they're simply too damn above the rest.

My vote goes to RDR2. Rockstar might take ages with their games (USED TO. nowadays they don't even release shit), but with every single release, they push the industry, and you see things in their games that are simply not present anywhere else.

Tales of Arise. Zestiria and Berseria were huge letdowns and Arise is a big improvement to the Tales Series. Metroid Dread as well was worth the wait, sick ass game.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I'm so glad that Nintendo took extra time, just to really perfect the game and make it that much more immersive.

I actually wish they had done that to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Those games actually had a great selection of native Pokemon. As far as Pokemon design and balance, Nintendo put their foot in that game. Excluding the starters, you had:

  • Pawmot
  • Arboliva
  • Ceruledge/Armarouge
  • Farigiraf
  • Gholdengo
  • Garganacl
  • Espartha
  • Tinkaton
  • Glimmora
  • Dondozo
  • Clodsire
  • Annihilape
  • Kingambit

And those are just the native Pokemon that caught my eye, and native as in new to that generation. I played a run through of the game with just the Pokemon native to the region. Garganacl, Tinkaton, Annihilape, Skeledirge, Farigiraf, and Arboliva. Not to mention the mix of great older Pokemon like:

  • Vesiquen
  • Blissey
  • Gardevoir
  • Gengar (that you can actually get without trading a random)
  • Tsareena
  • Staraptor
  • Ampharos
  • Garchomp
  • Heracross
  • Gyarados
  • Camerupt
  • Haxorus
  • Lucario
  • Skuntank
  • Honchkrow
  • Gothitelle
  • Heracross
  • Hippodon
  • Spiritomb
  • Gastrodon
  • Frosmoth

The problem is the fucking bugs of the game. Another issue is how trash the Pokemon League is in this game. This game needed an extra 2 years to cook. Iron out the bugs and give a better team to the League in this game, especially the champion.

Dark Souls 3 was a highly anticipated one for me. I wasn't eager for Elden Ring, but I did end up buying and enjoying it. It's a good game, just nowhere close to my other Soulsborne favs.

Definitely agree with Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Not only did it do proper 3D well, but it might be my favorite Kirby game in the series now.

Basically nothing. I can't think of any game that I pined after for years, and had it actually live up to my expectations. My favorite games of all time were mostly ones that I didn't expect to be good, and I wasn't waiting for.

But there's also StarCraft. I didn't wait long for it, and even though I knew it would be great, it still was able to rewrite my DNA. But back then, Blizzard could've shot someone in the middle of the street, and I would've still voted for them.

Starfield. The delay meant far fewer bugs at release.

Redfall is worth playing now after the patches, which took a long time.

Most Rockstar games. They take too damn long to make, but they are worth it.

Prey and Half Life 2

Prey took over 10 years and proved to be a fun but flawed shooter in the end.

Half Life 2 took 5 years and some of its tech still amazes today (being able to pick everything up, glass shattering realistically, cables and objectes being affected by wind, ...)

I played the leaked Half Life 2 build in 2003 (No, I did not illegally download it) and the final year of development was definitely needed.

Ocarina of Time was magic. I don't agree with most scores, but that deserved the 10. For me, the music played a big part in the atmosphere and story telling.

I love the way they compensated for the lack of voice acting and cut scenes using other means. I think it's the only game that has stuck with me for the memory of the adventure like a good film.

Most other games have great gameplay and all the resources in the world to tell the story, but they just aren't memorable to me.

There's other great games, but I can't remember if I was anticipating them or not during any long development.

Armored Core 6 and GT7 come to mind.

Still, waiting a decade for a new mainline entry is a little too long, so I'd like to see the next one come out a little sooner, haha.

Not quite what you mean, but Hot Wheels Unleashed. There have been a couple decent ones, but it took about 40 years for a developer to put serious effort into a Hot Wheels game. You could argue the Forza Horizon expansion did it first, (and I think it paved the way for Unleashed) but that's an expansion to another franchise. Seems like it should have been a no-brainer. Make a game dads who loved the toys growing up, could enjoy with their kids.

I don't own a PS4, but it seemed like The Last Guardian managed to be something special after being delayed a whole generation.
