have zero atmosphere compared to older games. Im just going to name 3..Doom3 "only doom i played"...Resident Evil "ps1"...Unreal "pc"...These 3 games still to this day have more "scare" to them than anything Ive played in a LONG time...

Just something ive noticed over the years..How about you all??

Yea "atmosphere" exclusively refers to dark and scary levels.

Scary and atmospheric are two different things. Many games this gen are far more atmospheric than those you listed.

  • BioShock 1/2
  • Dead Space 1/2
  • Uncharted 1/2
  • Gears 1/2
  • Assassin's Creed 2/Brotherhood
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Mass Effect 1/2
  • Prince of Persia
  • Batman Arkham Asylum
  • Demon's Souls

etc., are more atmospheric than the vast majority of games released in previous gens.

Yeah I hate horror games, and I get scared really easily, but Bioshock isn't all that scary but is very atmospheric.

I agree with this. Video games are more immersive and captivating than they've ever been.

Cinematic storytelling and atmosphere have really sky-rocketed in developer priority this gen.

There's plenty of games on consoles and PC this generation that have a great atmosphere like Call of Duty: World At War, Mirror's Edge, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Limbo, STALKER, Metro 2033 etc.

The STALKER games have by far the best atmosphere of any game I've played. It just gets to you, the amazing skies and awesome lighting help it out too.

So why is it that apparently only games where you're all by yourself in lifeless derelict wastelands/ships/post apocolyptic anythings are allowed to be considered atmospheric. Call me a troll but just because you're used to be all alone and scared of everything in real life doesn't mean the only games that are atmospheric are ones where you're all along and scared of everything. Either way... Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, Halo 3: ODST, Dead Space, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto IV all did happen this gen. But it seems any game that doesn't get a tipple A scoring average or doesn't feature you all alone and scared of everything isn't allowed to be considered atmospheric around here. A game world doesn't have any personality if the character talk. Apparently gamers cwont acknowledge the game world if the game doesn't shove it in their face and meet their preconception of what kind of mood an atmospheric game world should have.

You do know what I mean, when I say "atmosphere" right? AND lets get something straight..NONE of these games were PUSHED IN MY FACE or have AAA scoring at the time that I knew of anyways. As far as I know UNREAL was the 1st of its kind. AND Resident Evil was the 1st of times kind. NEVER seen any scores or reviews before buying them. I bought them when they came out. As for DOOM 3 its just looked cool so I bought it when it came out. I was right..it is cool.

Atmosphere to me are the following...

You can hear the birds NOT just see them

Rain

Water AGAIN hear it, not just see it

Hearing the trees blow around

Dogs barking off in the distance

IF you are quiet, you can hear your character moving slightly

lighting

thunder

things falling and crashing "rocks,walls,ect"

Screaming

UNSEEN monsters growling,ect

Go back and play the 3 games I mentioned. FOR the day, they really rocked it out and made you stop, listen, and NOT want to go around the next corner, or through a door..

YES there are other games, I just mentioned these 3 games..

A game that had surprisingly amazing atmosphere was Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The art direction and sound design but the OST all made that game feel... like an epic.

Other games with great atmosphere are, of course, Bioshock, Portal, Heavy Rain, Dead Space, Grand Theft Auto 4 and others.

You should try:

Demon's Souls
Nier
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
The Void
Lost in Shadow

Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4
Odin Sphere
Devil May Cry 1

Panzer Dragoon Orta

Shadow of the Colossus

Ikaruga
Gradius V
R-Type Final
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Baroque

Also, the upcoming Dark Souls looks very promising. From Software's games, particularly their dungeon crawler games in the vein of King's Field (i.e. KF, Shadow Tower, Demon's Souls, etc) have always been reliable for atmosphere out the wazoo.

Oh, and shame on me. I forgot to mention:

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series
Psyvariar 2
Portal 1 & 2 (P2's atmosphere was chilling at times)
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Ivy the Kiwi
Metroid Prime: Trilogy
Killer7
Borderlands
Rengoku II: The Stairway to H.E.A.V.E.N.
Limbo
Outland
Child of Eden
Knights in the Nightmare
Etrian Odyssey series

Most of those were released in the last 5 years. About half of them are fairly recent.
