I think stopping a nuclear missile to the tune of "Don't Want To Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith belongs with the all time great video game beginnings. How about you, SW? What games have the best beginning/intro?

Absolutely. despite gameplay is not very good but atmosphere and story done very well.
but the intro is just incredible. when you footstep in rapture.
recently finished TLOU. the intro is walk walk walk for like hours?
I remember being blown away by the opening of Metal Gear Solid when I tried the demo before release... The way the credits were still rolling while playing the opening section. It's such a simple touch, yet something I hadn't seen before. It sold me on the game.

Another game I'm thinking of is God of War, definitely a slower paced opening, lots of walking walking talking. But it does set up the new setting of Norway quite well.

The intro Half life and Bioshock started is best example of gaming intro. just sucked into the world without walking talking movie crap.
Atomic heart did the opposite.

What is your score for atomic heart?
8/10. could be much better still great.
Going to probably by hated by some but ... The Last of Us has one of the best beginning sections i've play.
As for a "cutscene", the MGS2 intro was pretty epic and if it counts, OoT title screen is as timeless as it can get.
Pong.
Two paddles squaring off against each other, like two gunslingers in a classic western, for a dual to the death.
The Last of Us has the most memorable beginning section. I was playing the intro and my wife asked me a few days later what movie it was because it looked so engaging.
MGS2 is my runner up. The entire ship segment was phenomenal.
Bioshock is my 3rd place. I remember the first time I experienced the crash and had to ride the elevator down. It was such a creepy vibe.
I miss these silly intros.
This is one of my favorites
Exiting the vault for the first time in Fallout 3 was amazing. I wasn't really feeling the game at first, but when it all goes nuts and you walk out the door... wonderful.
Portal 2 might have one of my favorite intro sequences ever made.
Then there's the "Up" into of gaming with Ori And The Blind Forest:
At the top of my head:
They all get you invested from the get go via the presentation.
The Last of Us has the most memorable beginning section. I was playing the intro and my wife asked me a few days later what movie it was because it looked so engaging.
And this is exactly why Its so terrible. the opening section you are doing literally nothing at all.
look at RE4 opening. within 10 mintues you are fighting against horde of zombies in village. this is how you introduce game to gamer.
Both Bayonetta and Nier Automata have really good introductions
Bayonetta is an underrated pick. It starts out brilliantly. I’ve been having the itch to play the first two.
Halo 3's first level. I was blown away by it when I first played it. From an artistic point of view, it had some of the best graphics of the Xbox 360's entire generation, my view. I played it a few weeks ago and it still blew me away. From the gameplay's perspective, sticking a brute with a plasma grenade is still a satisfying thing to do. Sometimes the grunts will carry two plasma grenades and will try to run into you, as a type of suicide bombing. It's phenomenal.
@dracula_16:
Indeed, great stuff!! ;)
And before I settled on the Fable 3 intro, I was going to post the Halo 3 intro which is awesome as well...
Final fantasy VIII. The battle with seifer and squall was dope. I just hope they ride on that rivalry. I think seifer if done right can be someone like sephiroth.

Yet my wife had no interest in watching me play RE4. The whole house scene and running through the streets, while not action packed in the sense of the player doing a lot, but it sets up the story amazingly well. It shows the downfall of society in a very quick fashion. I do respect your opinion, but I am going to stand by my decision of saying Last of Us intro was one of the best, if not the very best. The story telling in Last of Us really shines.
NG (Xbox) had a dope intro. The whole first mission sets up quite nicely with his village getting burnt down and fighting your way through.
Splinter Cell double agent had a dope intro.
Not the best splinter cell game but I thought the whole concept of starting in prison and breaking out with Sam Fisher.. as the starter mission.. pretty badass.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty -
The Last of Us:
Metal Gear Solid 4
I tried to come up with some other examples, but I toally agree with this pick. It is just sooo good.
MGS 1-4 games had great beginnings, if I had to rank em:
Lol, ended up being in order.
A few come in my head, I would say MS4 Really had the greatest intro, but some games like RE4, AND AC1 come really close.

youre running round a village chased by an ever spawning amount of zombies until arbitrarily the bell rings and they all wander off to the church. let's not pretend like it's some stellar gameplay segment. it's puddle deep and tokenistic at best.
in tlou's opening sequence as you escape the zombie apocalypse with your daughter in your arms you're opened fire upon by the military police. you somehow manage to escape unscathed but she's fatally wounded and tragically dies in your arms. it's supposed to hit hard and literally sets the underlying theme for the entire game.
the re4 intro is not even remotely close to being as impactful.
that is how you introduce gamers to a story heavy tps.
a marginally, and it is marginally, faster game-start to game-play metric means fck all, unless youre not interested in story, in which case why are you playing the world's most renowned story driven tps
Metal Gear Solid 2. It's pretty cool now, but at the time of its release it was incredible. I remember playing it for the first time when I finally got a PS2. Early 2002, I was 14. Felt like I was watching the future beginning right in front of me.
The only thing that was ever more impressive in a contemporary sense was seeing and playing Super Mario 64 for the first time when the N64 was new.
