Are there any games you really enjoyed, but stopped playing before you finished? Either you hit a wall, or it was too long, or you forgot what was going on after taking a break?

One or all of the above has happened to me with a lot of jrpgs, but Persona 4 stands out the most. I really enjoyed the characters, story, quirky side activities in the game, but didn't like the dungeon crawling. Just a string of randomly generated, cut and paste rooms that went on for multiple levels. And your supposed to play through each of them twice. I got about 80 hours in before I just needed a break. Tried to pick it up again a few times, but with my attachment to the story faded, the crawling proves too much of a slog. I have given up on ever completing it, though I still highly recomend it to most people. Heard P5 improves the dungeons a lot, so I may try that one day.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Love the setting, story, premis and got many hours into it, but the gameplay is just not good enough to hold my attention for the 50 hours it apparently takes to complete. Much prefer it's successors, none of which are perfect, but they don't overstay their welcome like this one.

Tales of Graces F comes to mind. I could never get past Kurt & he was the only boss I had trouble with. I don't have a PS3 anymore nor the game. Hope it gets ported to the Switch at this stage.

Brutal Legend comes to mind. Love the game, I just can't stand the gameplay what-so-ever, I never could go back.

That's a long list for me lol. But currently I would have to say Pillars of Eternity, it does so all of the things that I love in an RPG. But I tend to start it, put it to the side to play other games and when I return I end up lost and starting over again. I may inch a little further in the adventure than my last run then put to the side again to play something else. Should just play it in story mode mode to at least see how the story plays out.

The only games I never really finish are JRPGs. I think the only one I finished was Final Fantasy I.

Of the ones that I love and haven’t finished:

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IX and The Legend of Dragoon. I’ve replayed them all many times and have gotten pretty far but I either get bored or something comes up in my life and have to put them on hold. I find it difficult to get back into them after not playing them for so long that I just restart.

I still need to finish Persona 5, I really enjoyed what I played. I am tempted to start over, then again if I manage to finish it I can play again without need to study and work and all that and focus on my socials. Then when I think about which approach it seems like either requires a lot of time, and lately I have been focusing on my backlog and tying myself down to one game doesn't seem all that appealing at the moment.

Define complete?...

Because games like GTA5, Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim and so on have way TOO many side quests and pop up missions for me to complete EVERYTHING!

If I love a game I play it more than once, I rarely if ever 100% a game even if I love it unless its a linear 5-8 hour game.

I cannot finish Witcher 3 no matter what. My interest dwindled once I reach skellige because I am not earning much exp from quests or random killings. I just loses interest cause I am 50-60 hours in and still at lvl 27-28. it just irks me how slow the exp moves.

I really liked the game too and to this day I still think of returning and remembers exactly where I left it (met Yen, searching for some magic or explosion crater left by Ciri).

Persona 4 dungeon is not randomly generated but yes it does feels samey. the most demanding dungeon is around 7-8 floors but yeah, it does get tedious, especially if you frequently returns for grinding levels or doing sidequest. Hey glad you experienced Persona 4 btw, had you played Persona 3 and its mandatory random generated 264 floor tower and has a fatigue system you probably hated it even more. Hope you finish it someday, 80 hours means you are close good luck!

That's because you are doing quests too late. As you progress, you need to have completed earlier quests and complete the newer ones. Completing quests with drastically much lower levels will yield minimal XP.

As long as your level is not preventing you from doing quests, I don't see what the issue is.

I would say finishing the main story counts. Yeah, there are not many games I've 100%ed.

I guess randomly generated was the wrong term. Do the dungeons rearrange each time you play through them, or was my memory just bad?

Never did play Persona 3, but yeah, I would not have made it through a 264 floor tower :).

Now that I think about it I actually can't remember if its randomly generated or not. I guess some floors is random while event floors such as miniboss or puzzle floor is not? because I remembers Yukiko mirror floor level or Naoto floor fixed due to the backtrack needed. sorry please ignore my original post I need to replay P4 I guess.

probably I was just seeking how powerful I can get before continuing main quest but interest faded once I saw my level don't go up as much as my investment into the side quests.

Probably Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I'll play something else and come back to it, get frustrated, and put it down again. Thing is, I do like the game. It's just so damn hard. At least for me. And I finished the Souls series, Nioh, and Bloodbourne.

The main quests reward you with the most XP. I have never really cared about levelling up myself. They are just numbers. The content itself is what keeps me interested. The Witcher 3 does a great job for both the main and side quests.

I will... someday... for now unfortunately for witcher 3 I have a huge newer backlog that I want to go through before Persona 5R and FF7R

Persona 5

Nioh

Dark Souls 3

Love a lot about these games, but difficulty and hours required to play keep me from finishing them.

Unfortunately quite a lot of rpgs:/ usually comes to a place where my interest is dwindling and I will take a break. Once my rpg love is back up however I find it really hard to jump into a game midway and I usually end up starting over...

Dark Souls. Can't say I love it but I did enjoy my time with it. For some reason I stopped after 50 hours (I think I'm past the mid point) and after so long, I've lost all motivation to get back to it.

@judaspete:

Witcher 3. I love....pretty much everything about this game. EXCEPT for the combat system. It's boring, level grinding is almost impossible, fights require you to stick and dodge and it feels clumsy. So I just stopped playing it after reaching level 8.

@with_teeth26: you will not enjoy the dlc then. Nioh DLC so bullshit hard I got all the way to NG+4, gathered the ethereal weapons then comeback to the dlc and still it kicks my ass. At this point I just think I probably just suck at nioh tbh. Cheesed the whole dlc with combination of spells and kunai.

*on NG+ and further in Nioh, you can change the difficulty back to base level (Way of the Samurai) at any time.

@alkutraz: Me too! I've been on the final chapter of PoE for ummmm..... 5 years now?

Also, divinity original sin 2. Started first playthrough on tactician and was doing fine, until Ark. Then lost the same battle 3 or 4 times in a row, and put it down for over a year. Now I definitely cant beat that battle, as I dont remember how to play.

Ha! Yeah, I get what you mean with Brutal Legend. Personally thought the gameplay was decent enough, but probably would not have finished if the game wasn't Heavy Metal themed. I'm just sooo firmly in the target demographic that I felt obligated too.

The only two games that come to mind are Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes, and Deus Ex: mankind Divided. I like Kingdom Under Fire, but it's not interesting enough for me to put it in and play it again anytime soon. As for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided- Great game. I just have other games I wanna finish first, like Nier: Automata, Borderlands 2, and Modern warfare,

TES IV: Oblivion - 400 hours in (never completed it)

TES V: Skyrim - 300 hours in (never completed)

The Witcher 3 - 125+ hours in (will complete it!)

GTA V - 100+ hours in (never gonna complete)

Days Gone, HZD are two games I spent roughly 30 hours in, not completed yet don't think I ever will.

Bloodborne, I can't stand the grind and repetition even though I love the lore.

HZD, fetch quests and not sure what else turns me off on it.

The Witcher 3, RPG and open world games are getting super stale and just consume precious time.

Uncharted 4, I am at the boat part and it is gorgeous but man what a borefest.

I never finished Dark Souls 1, I got close but never quite made it.

Finished the others. DKS2 was my favourite of the series so far.
