I hope this doesn't impact the forums @TheEroica.

What are your thoughts on this, my fellow friends at SW?

That is some s***ty news. They keep f***ing with this place. If anything goes well they knock it back down.

This place is owned by Fandom now right? Not looking forward to their changes going by their other sites. Hope we don't get a load of 10% finished wikis and AI garbage.

It’s always tough when people lose their jobs, especially when it’s due to an executive financial report pushing for higher revenues. Hopefully, they can land on their feet.

Do we know of any prominent staff members leaving the site?

@kvallyx: Could've ask me ya'know. But anyway, it's not just GS, but its all over the gaming world that's been taking a massive hits on the layoffs. The whole economy is really crashing down, it feels like 2008 all aver again with the recession.

But now, it won't impact the forums as GS doesn't make revenue on the forums itself.

Noticed the front-page this year has became very, very heavy on advertisements to the point click it now see more of these than game stuff.

So yea, I guess that was indicative something was up.

Gamespot reviews are generally well written. I don't agree with them alot of the time, esp ignoring predatory monetization, but it's generally not lazy bait type shit like Kotaku.

@kvallyx: i can't say one way or another... I'm just not sure what they're looking at for solutions.... My guess is that the forums still carry a significant amount of hits for the site, despite being much much less than the glory days. I'm sad we're seeing this decline, I just don't know what the next move is.

It will suck real bad if it's just dead link all of a sudden.

Feel bad for the folks laid off.

I know we talk some trash about Gamespot as a company, but I know there were and are some people here that do like their job and do work hard at it.

@R4gn4r0k said:

I was reading somewhere that contracted writers get maybe $50-100 per article, which is why they're often such clickbaity trash and tend to be repeat articles just phrased differently lol.

But yeah, it was very rare these days when a true bit of actual video game journalism made it's way to Gamespot; but when it did, my god, it was refreshing.

The demand (or at least the appreciation for it) is there, I truly believe that, they just want the quick profits.

Capitalism sucks, as it is now. Need to temper it with some socialism. Become a perfect balance of capitalism and socialism.

Feel sad for the people who lost their jobs šŸ˜”. That is a really tough thing to deal with. Gaming industry is a brutal one. Hopefully they are able to quickly find other jobs.

I wonder what generative AI will do to gaming journalism? Let's say a human on one site writes an article about something. Then generative AI rephrases that article into a zillion different versions and post copies on a bunch of different sites. I wonder how humans will be able to break through all that noise. But we need real human writers!

I was an avid PlayStation Forums user back in the hayday. Checked some years ago and they got rid of the forums; off-topic, etc. Made a lot of good connections there; apart of the Welcoming Comittee, which teenage me thought was awesome. LOL. So I can resonate with some of ya'll if these forums go offline. :(

IGN is still doing well. Gamespot just wasn't able to maintain, let alone expand, its popularity and readership. These forums are completely dead. There is around an hour or two inbetween new posts nowadays; meanwhile this is how busy the forums were 11 years ago:

That's multiple posts per minute.

And with the forum halfway infested with posters that spread hatred for any games that aren't aimed exclusively to single late millennial males, there's no way for this place to get new users.
