GameStop: Nintendo Switch Selling out in hours, not days, Mario Kart driving insane demand

Gamestop stores across the country may have gotten new shipments of the Nintendo Switch in advance of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe release, but if you didn't already know that probably missed them. Nintendo's new hybrid living room/portable console started flying off of store shelves on day one, and it shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. It's good news for Nintendo, a company that badly needed a win with its core console business after the tepid response to the Wii U and good news for the Nintendo fans that have managed to get their hands on one of the things.

"It's exceeding our expectations," he said. "We knew it would be a high demand product, but our Switch allocations are selling out not in days, but in hours...the demand is so high that consumers have to react quickly to be able to get their hands on them."

And while specific predictions about future supply or demand are tough to come by, nobody seems to be banking on supply stabilizing any time soon. At this point, demand still seems to be riding a launch window peak where machines are selling out immediately, at least for all intents and purposes.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be a legitimate system seller. Yes, I know it's an old game, but for most people, it won't be. Not many people bought the Wii U or were even aware it existed after all.

I'd say their expectation to sell 10 million Switch units by 2018 is not out of reach at this rate

Nintendo fans sure love their recycled games. Its good for the environment.

Sadly I played Mario Kart 8 into the ground and have no interest in a second go.

The manager of a local B.B. mentioned to me the store received an unusually high allotment of MK8D copies when it normally gets a smaller amount and orders more as supply needs replenishing.

I really would not be against more Wii U remasters. I remember PS4 remasters were harshly criticized, but I think - much more than with PS3 - there is a huge audience of people willing to pick up the Switch who never got a chance to play Wii U's best games. Not that Nintendo should spend all their time remastering games, but it would be a relatively easy way to build up its library.

I'm especially holding out hope for a Bayonetta 2 port.

They'll sell more than 10. They'll be at 5-6 at the end of May alone, and there's still Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey coming.

When the gaming library is this limited, anything can, and will drive "insane" demand. I bet you a bunch of people bought Zelda even though they never cared about the series. Why? Because its that or nothing *cough* i mean, 1-2 Switch.

What are you talking about? The Switch offers a variety of games and introduces newer gaming experiences like playing on the go. That has never been done before according to fans.

From the moment we found out Switch is gonna be both handheld and home console, I knew it's gonna be a massive hit. This is with just a very few games, imagine how it'll sell once it gets more.

Why the hell will anyone buy something when the library is limited? You literally defeated your own argument within one sentence of the original, and what's more, Pedro, in all his eagerness to trip over himself to take a shit on Nintendo, ended up making a fool of himself as well.

I was amazed I was able to buy 3 switches.

When a 2014 title is creating insane demand on a system released in 2017, you know something's dead wrong.

Look at Mario Maker being the next big thing, creating 'insane' demand. Even tho, its some old ass game. Oh these sheep.

If that's the case, why not hd port every single WiiU game that is considered good? What kind of new n fresh console is the Switch gonna be if this happens?

Lets say you didn't own the WiiU. You have a Switch, you get those WiiU ports and consider those games to be quality. Cool. Now, what if you did own a WiiU and already played all those games to death. What are you getting with the Switch? You get absolutely nothing but a promised 3D mario by the end of 2017. Exciting? Don't think so.

@silversix_: I didn't realize that Splatoon 2 and Arms are also available on Wii U. Granted it's not a huge amount of games but if I can get one quality game per month I'll be satisfied.

I think anyone who buys the Switch as their primary will be missing out, but to say the Switch is not valuable as a gaming device is foolish.

This just shows that software isn't the only thing that sells hardware. MK8 didn't do much for the Wii U, but on an exciting new system that is well marketed and a technology people want, MK8 will help push the hardware.

If they're sensible, that's what they'll do- port all Wii U games over.

@silversix_: A limited library shouldn't drive sales according to your logic. People buy the Switch for Mario Kart and Zelda because they want these games. Hard to accept I know.

Anecdotal, but I ended up buying Mario Kart 8 in GameStop today. I picked up another pro controller and they were pretty well stocked on accessories. But as for the Switch, the worker said the same thing: they're gone the day that they come in.

Good to see, always enjoyed MK....these kind of games can provide several hundreds of hours worth of playtime, just pure fun, gameplay-focused experiences.

@silversix_: less than 15 millions sales world wide for the WiiU. Any game that gets ported is gonna be like a new release.

It's weird that you guys are getting stock shortages over there, because here in Aus most stores regularly have them in stock. You'd think they'd send more stock to the US instead.

Alright, then HD ports flood gates are open. For those who owned a WiiU, and now own a Switch, it must be exciting. I sure as hell wasn't excited when that happened to my PS4.

I just wanted to add this. How big is Gamestop's allocation? hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands?

Remember MS said it's elite controller was sold out everywhere, and yet we didn't know how many were allocated to stores, but don't let me a downer, all about the Switch train.

Cuz it's fun! Also, when I saw majority of Switches sold out at my local gamestop. I did see some parents buying a switch as well as some young adults.
