Walked in this morning to pick my standard copy of Second Son when the rep.....EDGAR.....kept asking me "are you suuuuuure you don't wanna hold out a week and get it used? After all, you ARE a Power Up member." He must have asked me at least four times until I turned around and walked over to the Best Buy across the road. Are they receiving commission??!!!

That sales rep is an idiot, he has a customer in his store and he's asking him to leave and come back (taking the chance the guy will go to another store entirely)....some of these stores hire fanboys and morons. Next time I went in I would ask that kid Edgar some questions and figure out why he was keen on that really stupid idea. Clearly he doesn't understand retail. You don't sent customers out the door. Perhaps he doesn't value his job.

The obvious thing is used sales, but that isn't what I think he was doing. They aren't trained to send customers out the door until next week, this was an initiative started for some other reason.

I have to agree with this. No matter if Gamestop primary profits come from used games, there is no way you are gonna send someone away and tell them to come back next week. The employee was probably a xbone fangirl and felt like he could make a dent in the games retail sales or something

You're lucky that the gaming stores in your country offer used games.

In my country, only brand new games are sold, although there is an advantage for us that games only cost about $42 tax included, if you are wondering, I live in Asia.

The stupid thing is, Gamestop killed the supposed "advantage" to used games. Before their monopolization of the gaming retail, lots of independent shops offered anywhere from $15-20 less on used games. This was back in the cartridge days.

But if Gamestop can only offer a $5 discount it really isn't worth it. I'd just as soon pay the extra $5 on new that gives me the complete package (like download codes) and knowing the profit goes to the devs.

It's a Gamestop, they just kept the name EB in select markets.

Here's something you didn't know. The used game industry hurts gaming more than piracy.

That's a not a trusted source nor a trusted writer (for all I know that's your buddy's article), and even if that was a legit interview, that's not a fact you have there.

What you have there is an opinion by Fable III combat designer Mike West. So, according to that guy, used games hurt more than piracy. That's something you didn't know, the difference between opinions and facts. You posted as if you had something we didn't know, some facts. Instead, you provide some interview with a combat designer's opinion.

I buy most of my games new because I love supporting my favorite developers, however, I also know the difference between opinions and facts and I can tell you that I've followed this issue closely over the years and there is no evidence that irrefutably proves that statement. It's an on going debate, with some developers saying they hate piracy, others saying they hate used games, other devs saying they hate both, and yet even others still saying they hate none of the above and in fact will sing praises about used games or piracy.

That's something I know and learned years ago. The issue isn't as simple as some would have you believe, and certainly that piece you linked gave no evidence one way or the other. In any event, I'm sure people would love to get rid of used DVDs, Blu-rays, Books, Videogames, speakers, AVRs, HDTVs, and more...companies and artists would love that, but it's a silly notion in a free market based capitalist society.

Nissan lost money when people bought cars used. WB lost money when people bought Dark Knight on Blu-ray used. There is an entitlement issue that some developers have.

Anyone who goes there should expect a question regarding preordering and encouraging the sell of used games. Its basically how the stores stay in business. Most of the other stores (best buy, target, walmart etc) do not specialize in gaming. If anything, their video game section mostly exists as a form of convenience. They're just hoping that you buy some other items in the store while you're there to look through their highly limited game section.

When it comes to gamestop, all you have to say is "no thanks, I'm just here for game X and I'm not interested in anything else at the moment." That's it. You are done.

Gamestop is a necessary evil. Not everyone can afford to buy a new game. I know I didn't when I was in Uni. But now that I can afford to support the devs, I do so without a second thought. Just emphasize what you want and what you don't. Keep doing this every time you buy a game from them and eventually you'll have an understanding relationship.

LOL, so you can save a measly $5 in a week? And have GameStop get ALL $55 from the used games that they resell after launch? **** them. I only shop there to get used DS games or old PS2 games

for those fucking preorder bonuses you assholes always get exclusive to your store.

also, I sometimes actually want to support a videogame company and not the assholes that sometimes open boxes just to repackage them and sell them at whatever price they want to.

To be fair, that game had always-online DRM and the servers were shut down, so any disk copy you purchased at the store would not work, either.

To be also be fair, from the article:

"It also did contain 18 single-player missions."

Tabling any discussion about that particular game, the issue was ownership. A user said he loved DD because of ownership. Turns out, Steam can and have removed a DD game from user libraries.

The article said, "...part of Steam's TOS we consumers don't really own the games but they are leased to us...". When discussing DD ownership and a reason to love DD games, this article seemed incredibly relevant.

Not just because this particular game's DRM, but also because of the precedent Steam demonstrated with this removal of 'DD games from users' action. Is it a unique situation? Right now, I'd agree, but it's certainly worrying.

Always online DRM would make single player missions unplayable, too. This is why the fallout from the always online announcement for Sim City was so strong and partially why EA gets voted for Worst Company in America on an annual basis.

I do agree that physical copies are much better for piece of mind, though. I really don't trust Valve, and it's getting to the point that even though I have bought the majority of my Steam library for pennies on the dollar, I'm pretty worried about what might happen to it some day, simply because it is so large.

I had no idea that they would only offer a $5 discount for used games, if that's the case, then that's bad. Last time I went to America, I actually bought a crappy game, and decided to return/sell it back to GameStop, lo and behold, as far as I can remember, since this was in 2006, the guy at the counter only offered me $10, for a game that had been just been released which cost $60 originally.

Huh? I thought Blu Ray discs are quite scratch resistant. Maybe he was thinking of 360 discs.

It really depends on when exactly you sell back a recent title. If I'm not mistaken Gamestop has this 3 or 4 week window to sell back (ok so it's really store credit) a new release game for about $20-25 for a game they can still sell for $55. But past that they offer pathetic trade in value.

In the pre-gamestop days, most stores offered 50% of a games resale value. So if they could sell a game for $40, you could expect to get $20. And lots of times this was cash too, not restricted to store credit only. Or some would give you the choice of cash or credit, with $5 more on credit as the incentive. It was all fair value to both parties.

But with GS, even if they sell a recent game used for $55, yeah past that 3 week window they'll only offer $10-15. So much less trade in for a game they sell for $40. Basically it's just not worth it. If the whole reason gamers sell old titles is to supplement the purchase of a new game, it shouldn't take 6 old games you paid $50-60 on just for that one new game, when it should be only 2-3 to cover new costs.

It's like I said, their rates offer no real incentive to buy used from them, nor to sell it to them in the first place. I mean for only $3-10 it would be better to keep said title as collectible memento. Better off selling on Kijiji or Ebay. But the real insulting thing about all that is their marketing, you see on those store posters and some TV ads, about how they're so happy to take your unwanted and unneeded games off your hands... like they're doing you a favor for it. rrrrrrrrrright... :rolls eyes:

Besides how much new stuff do they sell that's actually new? I remember wanting to buy a psp game so I went to the counter and the guy went and got the display box off the wall that was bleached out from sitting in the sun, had stickers UNDER the plastic on the box artwork, stickers stuck on the back of the box, a crack, dusty and covered in god knows what from being handled for years. He put a sticker on it to "seal" it and sold it as a new product. I asked him about it and he said "If the game disc has never been inserted into a console then its still brand new because it hasn't been played regardless of the packaging. That's gamestop policy. Besides dude its just the box the game is fine". I didn't buy it.

They are on the whole just an awful shitty terrible company.

This right here is what ticks me off about gamestop the most. I hate it when they say it's new, it's stickered to death and then they put another sticker to seal it that just leaves more residue on the case when taken off. I will only get a game through them if it's a collectors edition or bonus content thats only available through them. Last game I bought was Tales of Xillia CE from them. Overall I use BestBuy and Amazon for game purchases. With BestBuy it's nice because I get 20% off New Games with the gamers club (really was a deal since I was a member before the change, the rest of my year got upgraded to the new one and then I got an offer to extend it for 2 more years for 30 bucks). Then I get extra reward points for the gamers club, and then I get double points for using the BB card.

There is no reason to go to gamestop really. And yes, it's not the employees fault in total. The company does PUSH them to sell used, offer the PUR cards and pre-orders. I worked there for a month, most boring job in the world. All they had me do was organize game bins, and then ask why that last customer didn't pre-order anything or why I hadn't already gotten 5 PUR cards. And all you make is minimum wage. When I came back home from school they were the only place that gave me a call back so I took it. Then I got another offer and dumped them as soon as I could.
