Dont you think the fact that gaming has become so complicated, Nintendo decided to make a new console just to cater for the general populus rather than hardcore gamers goes to show that you're completely wrong? :|Ninja-Vox
I think he wants allgames to be two-dimensional with 8 bit graphics and sound. Afterall, that's how all 'hardcore' games are
Gaming of today is not gaming, it is about pressing some buttons and wathing a movie. To break it bluntly to you "new gaming hobos", it stinks and that's big time. Anyone with three fingers and the thinking capacity of a chimpanzee can walk though the "games" produced today. And if that is not enough, they lack presence. Gaming died in the nineties, rest in peace.CtrlShift
How do games like BioShock (15-20 hours long) that has maybe 30 minutes or so of cutscenes "watching a movie" Halo does not have many cutscenes, neither does Resident Evil 4, Guitar Hero, Ratchet and Clank, MotorStorm, etc.
See the patern? You are choosing to focus on a vast minority of current games that are cutscene heavy to try to prove your point.
I would take modern c1assics like Resident Evil 4, BioShock, Metroid Prime, Halo, Resistence, God of War, and so on any day over the old c1assics, which are nowhere near the level of todays games in any way.
Bioshock says you fail at life.
Integration of gameplay and story is a positive in this industry, though the King of Cutscenes, MGS, is still heavily beloved by most.

The original MGS was released in the 90's and was pretty cutscene heavy. To say that it 'lacked presence' though, is just wrong.

I liked Resident Evil 1 a bit, RE2 alot, and I haven't liked one again until RE4. I was actually very hesitant to get it for fear of it being more of the same, but I was in a drought on the Wii, so I got it, and was pleasantly surprised.

It is sad to see imagination being replaced by 3D-rendered graphics. Games of today relies on technology but they have lost the "soul". Anyone considering games like "The Last Ninja" or "The shadow of the beast" to be pillars of gaming would agree on this. CtrlShift
BioShock, Okami, Beautiful Katamari, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Viva Pinata, LittleBigPlanet, Psychonauts, etc all disagree with you. They have vast amounts of imagination.
Even games like Gears of War and Halo have imagination. If you don't see it, you are just looking at the graphics. Look into a game, the story, the characters, the art style, etc.
Again, you are using some games to prove the whole.

Wow, do you even read what people post? Bio-freaking-shock completely destroys anything you have to say about the matter. I'm an old-school gamer myself, but it's time for you to stop living in the past and get with the times. Games evolve, and if you don't want to evolve with them, then stick with your NES.
It's just the same as it ever was. Some games are good, others not so much.
You're probably looking at the past through rosie glasses or however the saying goes.

YEH! I think it is one of the best games to have came out... it was a good game... just not so much a good RE game :)i lifted this from another thread i posted in :P. its pretty much my view on how games should evolve with RE as a example.
''while an amazing game all on its own it lacked alot of what made RE great in the first place, thats the puzzles, challenge and how downright tense the game made you feel. The new combat system was a great touch but they sucked alot of the RE essence for me in the process. It must be possible to make a over-the-shoulder RE that will have the survival horror elements and some unique or traditional puzzle solving with it. Just imagine REmake with over the shoulder.
i am not asking for generic zombies either i am just saying you can evolve a lil too much. Zelda is one of my favourite games but i feel it needs a fresh idea but just imagine if they took the dugeon crawling and item collecting out, would it really be a zelda game? Thats what RE 4 kinda felt like to me.
now before i get the RE 4 fanboys on me i will just say i still thinks its a great game worthy of its high acclaim.''
Gears of war was "good". One of the better games I've been playing lately. In the end I guess we'll all be sitting in a movie theatre wearing some kind of "cyber"-glasses with a controller in the right hand while drinking coke and eating popcorn with the left.

Given your criticisms (Watching games, technical specs over creativity), if you consider Gears one of the better games, you must play terrible games. While Gears is a great game for what it is, it is a game that uses its technical merit more than creativity. Its story is pretty decent if you read into it in the right way, but its hardly a "charmer".
I highly suggest some Viva Pinata or BioShock if you like the 360, or Okami and Beautiful Katamari if you have a PS2 if you want fun, imaginative games that push creativity over brute specs.

Gears has awesome gameplay at its core.

It does, and that is why I said it was a great game. However, given the TCs two criticisms of gaming, Gears is hardly the antithesis of those criticisms, and yet its one of the better games he has played, which makes me question what other games has he been playing.
But for the antithesis of his criticisms, there are games like Viva Pinata, BioShock, Katamari, Okami, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and Clank, etc, not to mention the tons of XBLA games that are creative and inventive.

Games just need to be harder. Like bosses that take you 4 days or something.Weslii
If you mean 4 days worth of trying, I would say that I would immediately stop playing that game.
The average gamer is in their 30s, and they don't have the hours in a week to devote to gaming that a younger teenager could. I am in my early 20s, and I struggle to get a dozen or so hours a week to game, what between college, girlfriend, friends, and a full time job.
Its not simple, and games like BioShock, that are challenging but forgiving, are, IMO, great. They allow you to be challenged, yet they make it easier to move on if you choose to do so, so that you aren't wasting hours trying to beat one boss.

There are times I'm playing Bioshock and I forget it's a game and think it's a movie :P. The graphics, sound, and presentation are mindblowing.
