With the GDC this week, should we be as excited as we would be if it were the old E3?  It seems like Sony is treating it as the new E3 (with the rumors flying around as to what they will announce), but it doesn't seem like MS or Nintendo is prepping anything big.

I'm interested to see how this week unfolds, but it doesn't seem like GS is giving the GDC the same type of hype as they did for E3.  Should they be?

Because the GDC isnt the E3. E3 and GDC have completely different goals. E3 is specifically meant for the gamers and journalists. GDC is meant for the developers and sharing experiences about the development process of their games - something most gamers, as the end consumer, have little interest in.

Sony does seem like they are trying to make announcements for the gamers and less for the developers, but that doesnt stop the rest of the conference for mostly developers. If you want some more in-depth coverage, Gamasutra.com has some good previews.

It is up there in hype. Really I find more info comes out of GDC than E3.

No GDC is for developers to meet and talk about the future of gaming, not for the consumers.  Yes there will be shows of games and stuff but no where close to E3.

So far the only good thing Ive just read was that MS is relaxing on the XBLA data limit.  Its now went from 50 MB limit to 150 MB limit so now we can possibly see more bigger and better XBLA games.

Given that E3 as we know it no longer exists... I'd say yes. We should be excited about GDC and what it has instore for us gamers. The only thing now is that people wont be able to view these games in droves like they could in E3's of yore.

Sony has a PS3 Launch date in just over two weeks. What do you expect them to do? Hide behind closed doors and say nothing?

No...this is not the new E3.  While I do agree Sony is trying to use this as a platform to make announcements I think that is more due to the fact that they are launching in Europe this month and want to create as much buzz as they can....with out a major gaming show around ...GDC is the next best thing.

This show however is still all about devs and learning new tricks of the trade.

No, I fully expect Sony to make some big announcements, primarily due to the EU release coming up.  I guess the point of my post is to ask the question: What is the new E3 given that E3 doesn't exist anymore (as we used to know it)?  Some say TGS, some others.  I'm just wondering what is going to fill that role of the conference that all the new games are announced, etc.
