Games that look better cost more money to develop. If they cost more money to develop, that means games will cost even more to purchase. And that also means less developers and game publishers.
Wow, I can tell even from screens a noticable difference from the current consoles. The improved effects look really nice, for example the reflections. We would have to see (or even better, play) a game taking advantage of the tech to really appreciate the difference though, like when Gears of War came out for this gen.

And that also means less affordable risks, and thus less creativity and fewer new IPs. Progress sucks sometimes.
That said, looks pretty hot.
I bet you developers can already do that on PC, but they just wont.TheAcountantManI'm sure they can. What else would they be building the engine on? Like last gen they build engines on PC than port them to console hardware once they know exactly when the specs are. They probably already have a general idea because Epic will be one of the key developers for next gen console and MS would have given them a rough idea of the specs for it's next console. I believe we will see the next gen Xbox sooner than many think.

Thats not strictly true, a lot of time developing in game assets is spent on making them low poly with efficient use of textures / maps.
Too many people keep crying that graphics are good enough. So, next gen ain't coming any time soon.
I've been ready to move on since 2010. Tired of the same looking games, jaggies, blurry look, crappy physics, low res textures, low FPS and all the other things 5+ year old hardware brings.
If we ever do get to next gen in my life time... It will be awesome to finally see what I been dreaming about since the 1980's. Life like graphics and game play on consoles. That's if we don't get hardware rehash and penny pinching like Nintendo did.
Buy a gaming rig, next gen consoles are only going to be around the level of current gaming rigs (unless they come out many years from now). Latest GPUs easily do x8 MSAA antialiaising, 2k - 4k textures and lots and lots of real-time lighting. The only real improvement will come when more games are developed specifically to push the hardware, but the hardware already exists in current PC gaming.Too many people keep crying that graphics are good enough. Lol this forum is ridiculous...we have pc gamers talking about how they are 2-3 generations ahead of consoles and then we are given screenshots that look better than any similar artstyle pc game by a large margin(even Metro pales in comparison to these pics imo) and you complain? Based on your own logic next gen consoles wont look anywhere near as good high end pc games right now....
Imagine if next gen consoles had the equivalent of a gtx580 or even a gtx480, at 1080p(cant see them running any high than this, theres no need to) and 4xaa they would look far superior to high end pc games right now due to how better optimised they are!

Yes, Yes... I have a gaming PC. I don't buy many games on it because of the stupid DRM they have. Plus the fact that hackers are so freaken bad. No body can play fair on PC any more.
There is to many variables to deving for PC. There is so many combos of hardware, software and all the other factors that make systems unique...it's all but impossible to make a perfect running game.

"When we finished Battlefield 2 and 2142 we talked about what's the next big step that changes gaming. We're good at technology and we wanted to create something that scaled better than Frostbite 1 did. The PCs were already -- three years ago -- starting to get ahead of the consoles. How could we make good use of that?"

Lol i doubt u have a gaming rig because 1 DRM is not that bad ive had absolutely no problems with it unless you are one of the few people in the world with computers and no internet 2 Hackers are not that much of a problem on any decent server...immediately kicked! Consoles also have their fair share of hackers and ive actually encounter more on consoles than pc 3 "Optimise graphics settings" There you go....

Yes todays pcs are far more powerful than consoles but 2-3 generations ahead? Come on now. In what 10 or 15 years,3 generations away, hardware now will be obsolete..... even a low end gpu would be more power than a gtx580.

You obviously have not been gaming on PC for very long. You can go onto youtube and see people hack in just about every game there is. They make hacks so good that even the punk busters can't catch them. The only thing that gets them caught is kill cams and head shot spams.
DRM is bad. hence all the fuss when they started using it. People would get hacked because it opened up security holes on their PC's. Plus DRM would not remove. Which led to some of the DRM companies to make removal tools.
Believe it or not but some people actually use laptop where ever they go. Internet isn't available 100% of the time. It's pretty sad to be tethered to an internet connection.
There is no stardardized DRM... Which leads to many issues.
If you think there is many hackers on consoles you are mistaken. Not many people want to rip open something... Let alone have the technical knowledge to do so. Even then the only real threat on consoles is lag switches and KB mouse users.
"There you go...."
This. You can just hear certain gaming companies crapping their pants at the thought of how much it's gonna cost to make a game like that. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some developers were relegated to handheld/download-only entries just to keep themselves afloat.Games that look better cost more money to develop. If they cost more money to develop, that means games will cost even more to purchase. And that also means less developers and game publishers.

I just explained it doesnt work like this!! The primary reason games take so long to develop is because of asset creation, teams and teams of artist bashing out items that populate the game world/level. When you have very constrained technical limitations, like 512 ram, you have to take time to model that item within those constraints. Believe it or not, its much easier and faster for artists to create beautiful really highly detailed in game assets than to have to create the same asset but find a way of doing all the detail in a single 512 texture file, or to build 4 objects together all sharing the same 2k UV space.
more powerful hardware = more room for artists to work with = less time spent on messing around with merging texture files etc
for 400-600 bucks per next gen console this gen games should already look like that. plus the cost of hdtvs. instead we get games with crappy hair and fake looking grounds plus we get half finished full pricedgames so they can sell us dlc
Next gen "whenever it happens" will probably be more about the software than the hardware, systems are at a bit of a impass where it's not a massive jump technologically and they may decide to instead focus on being more lean hardware wise instead of hemoraging cash on the launch.JynxzorWell put. If there was actually a large technological leap to be made for Next Gen games, Sony and Microsoft wouldn't be coming out with things like Kinect and Move. The current consoles are gonna be here for at least another couple years. I think the earliest we'll see a new console from Sony or Microsoft is 2014 but we may see something new from Nintendo before that (who knows what they're doing over there).
