I just wanted to get everybody's thoughts on something that I've been confused about lately.

I've been noticing a lot of people complaining that Resident Evil 5 looks disappointing because it looks like RE4 with improved visuals. I never played RE4, but the complaints seem to stem from the fact that RE5 is using the same animations, shooting mechanics, and enemies that were used in the previous installment.

Now, I'll use Gears of War 2 as an example of why I'm a bit confused by this thinking. I don't think anybody can deny that Epic is, for all intents and purposes, doing with GeoW2 exactly what Capcom is doing with RE5. They're using the same animations, the same shooting mechanics, the same enemies, etc...; However, it seems that GeoW2 is getting nothing but praise from people.

What is the source of this discrepancy? Is it merely because RE5 is the first installment on current-gen consoles while Gears 2 is the second? I'm curious what you guys think.

Resident evil 5 looks way too much like gears .....or is it gears of war looks way to much like resident evil.....IDK all i now is that they are similar and the AI in both games are horrible. HOPEFULLY both games will improve in that department....

These are the things that made the RE series what it is!!! Those fixed camera angles added to the scare factor big time.

Resident Evil "WAS" a survival horror game, now it's a TPS when you think about it that way you might see why Resident Evil fans feel Violated by the direction Capcom is taking the series. and also non hardcore FPS fans are more picky than FPS fans who usually just take what they get as a gift from god. IE: Halo 2-3 and Gears-2

I agree. For people who only played RE4 I don't see what the fuss is all about, you're getting a new game with improved graphics and online co-op, what more do you want? If the newer RE fans want to see a difference in the RE gameplay then how about picking up the older games, now, if they can't deal with the graphics, then thats their problem. HOWEVER, for people who have played the entire series such as myself, then there would be room for complaints about RE5's current state. Many of the hardcore RE fans just want the things that made the older REs so great included into the newer installments, such as the scare factor that RE once had, and the thought-provoking puzzles. I personally, can live with the over the shoulder gameplay, I wasn't crazy about it in RE4 but I can deal with it. The largest improvement that Capcom can do with RE NOW, for me, it would have to be amp up the scare in the game, that would make me MORE than happy.

From fanboys, yes. But they'll hate anything regardless of whether it's good or bad. They don't count.

I only own a PS3, but I think Gears 2 looks fantastic.

true man....i use to LOVE to resident evil series before 5....resident evil 4 was okay i thought of it as a change of pace..something new.......but resident evil 5 went TOO FAR...its now a TPS...which i do not like. The game is now about....running "zombies" and mindlessly killing all of them with machine guns and rocket launchers...which in the earlier resident evil's rocket launchers and machine guns were only obtainable in the last what....5 mins of the game lol?

The game has been taken so far from what it used to be, it doesn't even remind me at all of the Resident Evil of old. Now I'm not saying RE4-5 are bad games, they are both going/are blockbuster hits...but why use the Resident Evil franchise for this? There was a dedicated fanbase for the Survival Horror genre that they had in the palm of there hands and they just crushed it into a fine powder to try and grab a slice of the action/adventure crowd.

I bet there are alot of people here who have never touched Resident Evil before 4 and have no idea what I'm talking about, shame on you people get to know the roots of the game and you might agree that this is a polar shift in the wrong direction for the series.

What i'm saying is that there is no double standard. People are hating on RE5, yes, but your point about "why not Gears 2 then?" is wrong, because that gets just as much hate, if not much more.

Haters will be haters.

I liked the original RE games, but what really made it a survival game was the fact that you were fighting the controls and camera the entire time. RE4 & 5 have definately taken a huge departure from the series roots, but 4 turned out to be a better game IMO.

Dead Rising is a way better survival game than the first 3 Resident Evils anyway :P

No, i think what RE fans want are puzzles that actually require some thinking, Numerous areas to explore without emphasis on linear pathways, some frights and scares and the feeling of survival achieved through things like limited ammo and health supplies. Oh, and the fixed camera was there for mood. It controlled what you seen in the room, and from what angle you seen it. Much more effective than over-the-shoulder view.

Theres a 4 year gap between RE4 and RE5.

A 2 year gap between Gears 1 and Gears 2.

Thats why people hate on RE. Its had a lot of time to change, but hasnt.

Still, I know I'm going to love RE5 anyway.

RE 4 was too actiony, but I like the over the shoulder camera much better. I agree there should definately be some good puzzles, not just a find-this-thing-and-bring-it-back-here kinda deal, though.

Agreed. Granted the inventory and controls needed fixing, the game wasn't even a "Resi" game to me. I prefered the creepy atmosphere and horror.

I also felt the story was taken and ruined in the process as well.

Agree. Although in RE4, Leon is so close to the camera which makes it scary too because you cant see whats right behind him. Especially with surround sound, and you hear something moving on the rear speakers, you **** yourself. I just hope with RE5, they keep that aspect the same, and dont move Chris further away from the camera and send the game even further into the realms of an action title.

Exactly, this is a new generation and the game is using old technology. RE 4 got alot of praise though and revived the series I guess that's why Capcom stuck to it. It also could be because the guy who made Resident Evil 4 is not making Resident Evil 5.

besides. RE4 went less horror and more action, it was fine for then, but now we see TPSes like... like gears, that have done so much more.

No, the controls have stayed the fairly similar as the series has progressed, the only change has been aiming system, which I'm fine with. I also prefer the new camera, I just want a survival-horror RE again. RE5 is using the same animations as RE4, at least in it's current build, and there were some noticable glitches in the demo shown at E3 that need to be fixed. Having a companion with you seems like a pretty poor way to execute a survival-horror (unless it's done like RE0, which it's not) so I've pretty much given up on that, and from the amount of ammunition dropped by the enemies, it seems like they're sticking to the RE4 ammo-drop system, getting rid of any hope for a survival-based game.

So far coming from RE4, they improved the overall graphics slightly and the main character models quite a bit, but the enemies still look quite similar to how they did before, and they animate almost exactly the same. The environment graphics and enemy models need some touching up, and the addition of Coop and a cover system does not make me happy, but I'm sure some action-TPS fans will find it enjoyable.

well i watched a bit of stuff on gears and i think they are using a different animation technique or something because the new gridlock shows the discrepancy between the 1st and 2nd gears in terms of visuals

First of all Gears 2 has a lot of improvement over the first (better cover, more fluid animation, more weapons, there are new enemies, and new shooting mechanics...do the research) and previews are saying RE5 is an exact replicate of the system used in RE4. So while the changes in Gears 2 are minimal they amount to more than what is seen in RE5, the first next gen installment of the franchise.

Second of all even if you wanted to call Gears 2 an exact replicate of the original Gears anyway, Gears 1 was a next gen game and it still feels extremely fresh to this day (not to mention we aren't even 2 years removed from its original release). RE4 will have been out for 4 years by the time RE5 comes out, and it was a game from an entire generation ago. So its a little different.

I honestly don't completely understand the complaints either because RE5 looks great to me and I enjoyed the system used in RE5, but I'm just trying to put them into context. I think that RE5 looks fantastic and I'm excited for it, but that is the difference between RE5 and games like Gears 2 that are already getting sequels this gen.

I loved RE4, but even I know RE5 looks WAY too much like 4, as in it's basically RE4: Africa Edition, the fact is, had it been in a similar setting the same enemies would be fine, but it's a completely different place yet the enemies remain the same, even one of the bad guys sounds exactly like Salazar from RE4. The plot even sounds the same for crying out loud, go to mystery village find everyone is infected, rescue woman, mystery woman helps you our. What next, all the infected are being controlled by one man.

its because its no longer about exploring and solving puzzles anymore its all about shooting, which makes sense but i for one liked re4 alot but still prefer re2, and i just wish that they would do another one in the old style of the series... but i know its most likely not going to happen
