Gears had the worst story I've ever seen in a video game, I've never cared about the main character or the whole team, and it's just too weird and bad, the line that the main character says (I even forgot his silly name because of the horrible story/plot) when he chainsaws an enemy still gives me nightmares, "blood, guts, just an another nice day in the job!!",
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?
I hope Gears 2 will have a better story (it's easy to make a better story than what Gears 1 had). but I doubt it.

It's not really a story-based game. I think saying it has the worst story of any game you've ever seen is an epic exaggeration.
Ever since CliffyB said he played and liked MGS4. Epic have been boasting about Gears2's storyline being godly and what not. Hm.. Wonder why that is. :roll:Dahaka-UK
Since when?
the only reason someone will cry during gears 2 will be because their 360 rrod'd and they have to miss outt on the awesome gameplay. not so much the storyfinal_fortresswell its written by the same game who wrote bioshock and made all those tape recordings. gears too has the same thing, decent story with lots of hidden voice and paper sheets to add to the story, its better then bioshocks story the writer said.

I very highly doubt that, but I will judge for myself in November.
the same guy who wrote bioshock wrote gears 1 and 2 and and he always says his stories will make u cry, its called hype.... oh well mabe not gears 1.LibertySaintSusan O'Connor wrote BioShock and Gears of War. Josh Ortega is writing Gears of War 2.

hopefully they can introdoce some twists and surprises to the story like bioshock had, and hopefully hes not just hyping the game and truly means the story is better than bioshocks

Eric Nylund helped in Gears and Ken Levine and, lets be honest, Ayn Rand helped on BioShock.
That Eric Nylund was involved in Gears leads me to believe that quite a bit of story was trimmed, as Nylund is a pretty superb sci-fi writer.

It was, unfortunately. You can tell during Gears that the potential for a good story was there, it's just never used i.e. was removed.[QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"][QUOTE="RobbieH1234"]Susan O'Connor wrote BioShock and Gears of War. Josh Ortega is writing Gears of War 2.RobbieH1234

Thank you for that though, because otherwise I would not have even thought to have looked.
Hopefully Gears 2 will rectify the story issue. A great story in a game can make a good game absolutely stunning to me.
even if the story is a disaster this game will destroy anything else gameplay wise. if you want a good story go read a book or watch a good movie. please dont say mgs4, please for the love of jesusmephisto_11
See, there is the problem. I do read books, and I do watch movies. Hell, I even play the movie/book/game MGS4 :D and I enjoy my games to have stories. There is less and less rational for most games to neglect story like they do.

a game with great gameplay is just that and nothing more. it transcends to a new level when an awesome story is intertwined making it greater than the sum of its parts. i dont understand why you wouldnt want that to be in gears 2
It was mainly stuff to do with the relationship between Marcus and his father. There's tiny mentions of it during the game (Marcus' trial and imprisonment, the father's research), but it's wasted potential. Hopefully Gears 2 can fix that, because if there's one thing Gears was missing it was a good story.I figured as much when I was playing it, and only feel more sure now that I know who penned it. According to some interviews, the story lead, Josh Ortega says the game could make you cry. Even though that seems like a positive point, couldn't it be really awkward? The first Gears didn't exactly have a dramatic story, focusing on the characters' lives, which is what people preferred. So if the Second one takes a dramatic change like that, it could turn into a Brothers In Arms kind of over-the-top story (which is really bad IMO). Gears 2 is my most hyped game of 2008, but the story might fall short of it's expectation.Maxned
wasn't the story one of the most critizised points of Gears?

of course i would but the first gears had horrible storytelling and it got a 9.6. i wouldn't get my hopes up and be disappointed if the story is average. the gears universe is cool enough in itself so i dont feel that gears 2 has to have incredible story telling to be enjoyed.

oh ok i misunderstood what you were saying it seemed that you thought that storytelling didnt belong in games and that if you wanted a story you should go read a book. now i see what you meant to say and i completely understand where youre coming from even though i disagree and think a good story would help out alot
Yeah you dont play gears of war for the awesome addicitve story, you leave that to Resistance.

Resistance had a story?
Story is important, so I hope geow2 has a good story to accompany the great visuals and mp.... it gets boring shooting every moving object for no apparent reason... a good story gets you immersed more into the overall experience when playing a game..

You would rather stick with a rubbish story than getting a good story this time around?

Any game has more of a story than Geow.
so what if the story is a disaster.
lets be honest here, there are some games that are made to go with the story, like MGS, or Halo to some extent. Without the story MGS4 would never have got a 10, the story carries the game along.
Then there are some games that are more focused on gameplay, like gears. It could have no story at all and it would still be just as fun. If this game has a rubbish story I wont care. I completed gears 1 but I have no idea what they aere fighting for really. To me its just aliens Vs humans. I did not ta\ke notice of the story becuase I was having way too much fun trying to chainsaw 5 enemies without being killed to even think about the story for a second. This is not the sort of game that will make you think at the end. Its like a hollywood action film. ou just sit down, switch off and have a hell of a time playing a game with great gameplay and over the top gore.
they should just get rid of the story imo and just have the shooting bits :)

Resistances story was ok, it was a good idea. But the way the story was told was horrible. It was just some woman who would narrate whilst you looked at some grey photo's. If they told the story properly then it would have been amazing, the concept was brilliant, but the way it was told killed it for me.
I personally never completed the game. I got to a driving bit where you just took a base, then hasd to take loads more of them and they were all the same. I decided that I did not care about finding out weather the human race survived or not and played the game online, which was good.
The first gears was practically non-existant in story but it had good potential, like when dom referenced that he "knew someone" that was a stranded, I knew it was a female. The game practically teased me with possibilities and never delivered. I'm not expecting anything from gears 2, but i'll be open to a pleasant surprise.
My theory is that Gears of war had no real story* and was a great game.
So even if the story is a disaster in gears 2, the game won't be.
*Well not one that they cared to really explain or bother to try make logical in anyway.

Great stories in games make games more memorible when mixed with good gameplay.
