Gears Of War 5, or as I like to call it "boring ass wall-cover shooter", has lost half of it;s player count in a single week, which itself was already shockingly low.

At one point, Underrail was even outselling it, which itself was released in 2015.

On the upside -

Why would anyone buy it on Steam when game pass ultimate was $2 for 2 months?

Agree. Why the hell would I pay $60 when I can play Gears 5 for less & play other games with GP? Gears 5 was awesome, but no way I'm paying $60 for that kind of game.

@xhawk27: You can own it on Gamepass too,.cheaper than steam plus you get the game on pc as well as Xbox, and also get over 100 games that you can download and play, plus more on pc.

Again, why would you buy it on Steam?

lol love the excuses for the failure that this 'day and date' Gamepass release strategy has turned out to be for MS.

MS ALWAYS does stupid shit that blows up in their face.

LMAO at silly lems hyping gamepass to be the savior of xbox....NO ONE has bought any more xbox's and the games sales are now non-existent. They've just lost hundreds of millions of dollars with no upside.

But right now I can get it on gamepass for $5 or less if its your first time subscribing to Ultimate or PC gamepass and get access to a bunch of other games as well. For those of us that really just mainly care about the campaign it's a great deal and besides I can always buy it for cheaper at a later date or buy it straight off the Microsoft Store right now at a discount if I still have gamepass.

It also isn't counting all the people playing it on PC that aren't playing the Steam version. I'd imagine its a lot higher if we included all the gamepass PC players.

My experience with it:

It's not a bad game necessarily, in fact it does a lot of things well.

But as with a lot of games lately, if you've played one Gears of War game, you've played them all.

The game was not compelling enough to keep me playing it; I got to the part where it turns into an open world, thought "hey that's neat", and stopped playing lol. The story was a little too slow to dole out the tasty bits to keep me interested, and without an interesting story, there really is no reason for me to play the game I've been playing for the last 13 years or so.

I tell you what, these 15-dollar indie titles offer a lot more gameplay, innovation, and hours of enjoyment than all the big so-called "AAA" games this year. It's been one long stream of disappointments.

Yeah, the open-world aspect was actually kinda nice, if not limited, but it did slow down the story. I felt the same way, though i'm struggling through to the meaty parts. Up to the Rocket Hangar in Act 3.

Huge disaster? I have yet to see how that conclusion was made. Gears 5 was a better version of Gear 4 which was another standard Gears game.

Gears 5 is eh. Pretty much the bare minimum in all modes, Nothing unique or special about it. Barely any maps to play on, Campaign is trash and Escape mode is just repetitive as heck. I'm glad I didn't buy it, One of the perks of having Game Pass. Also, It certainly doesn't help that it was released just before Borderlands 3, Link's Awakening and Fifa. BL3 is gonna kill off a pretty large bulk of the player base as it is.

Uplay+ is free for an entire month, with Breakpoint an upcoming release, and Odyssey an initial release. Origin Access also offers new releases. Can you do the math for those as well?

@lundy86_4: replace those with the lastest far cry or assassin's creed and you have a point. But then they would still sell well so you wuddnt have a point

Gears is a flagship title. Its suppose to sell regardless.

lol to my knowledge neither Far Cry or Ass Creed flopped with 16k and 23k sales in UK and US first week...

Don't know or care about any rental services but Far Cry and Ass Creed still sold at retail and already made enough money to cover production.

Gears 5? That shit never left the gate, complete flop in every sense lol only 3 million "players" first week for both Xbox and PC user base of over 200+ million at only $1 or $2 entrance fee? Train Wreck!

The game sold like 150,000+ copies on Steam when it was available for $2-$15 via GamePass, that's no slouch considering. If it sold that on Steam of all places and PC where there's no attachment to the Gears franchise whatsoever it likely sold a million plus on Xbox alone plus whatever it gained in attachment from GamePass. I don't think this game is at any risk of being some kind of a failure.

The game is like a buck through game pass, wouldn't expect the steam numbers to stay strong. That said, the game has cross play so it's all good as far as community stuff.

Larger issue is how buggy the game is. Been playing broop with friends, because otherwise I wouldn't sit through the campaign (too boring, not my thing) and I've had to reload a checkpoint because

>the person playing jack couldn't pick upgrades in the menu, when the game puts all the players in a mandatory upgrade menu just so the jack can pick shock trap

>reload to do the basic ass press button interaction to progress the segment, because the prompt wouldn't come up n work

>because an enemy we had to fight before opening a door wouldn't load in

>because there was a collectible only the jack could grab, and he wasn't getting the prompt

and the list just goes on and on and on. Like what the shit? The mp, admittedly for a series that has a history of launching in, lets say not the best state: has this thing where it sets up a full lobby, before kicking everyone back a bunch. Long ass match making times day one, then live didn't work at one point.

One of my biggest concerns with this game pass shit, is how it might enable Microsoft even more to release their products a bit undercooked (admittedly the game could be running no bugs n glitches on xbox one, that I don't know of personally as I play on PC) instead of taking the extra months to finish up the game. Because I would like a complete package when they release Halo 6.

It doesn't make any sense to buy this at full price if MS is offering it anywhere from free to a dollar or two. Not really sure why MS bothered with a physical version if they're going to retreat into Game Pass now. I guess out of a courtesy.

This game still came in at #2 in the UK, but it's still the lowest selling Gears at retail by far. I know what the point of this stunt is, but holy hell it's risky. MS was happy to see that huge boom in players in the one weekend only to see the numbers dive on Steam and Twitch. It's still doing OK on the Xbox Most Played though.

I mean, MS burning money is working out for me. But, there's no way in the world I would see the rest of the industry giving away new AAAs day 1 on a sub though. At least not the way MS is doing it.

I'm enjoying the game so far. Overall it improves on 4 in almost every way. Really well paced narrative, it mixes well different combat situations, open world sections complement the more traditional ones, it has some excellent horror/moody moments, good environmental storytelling and characters are for the most part interesting. Lighting and colour palette are great too.

On the negative side I'll say that the classic GoW movement needs to be redone if you're going to have exploration mixed into its design and it's a bit buggy. But I'll say it too, in my experience it's not more buggy that God of War or the final third of Spiderman were.

Buddy and I been playing through one act every sunday for the last couple weeks, tbh aside form launch week it's been good, launch was basically unplayable in co-op but after the first patch it's been solid.

The gameplay is more gears so take that for what it is, but the story clips along at a nice pace, the dialogue is surprisingly well written and performed with aplomb, it's pretty unapologetic about what it is as a game and tbh I actually think it's one of the stronger entries in the franchise.

For the price in terms of value for money it's hard to beat, this is definitely being used to Trojan horse games pass, that said if this is indicative of what MS are going to be doing moving forwards it's kind of hard to argue with.

What’s the player count on XBO?

Not surprised sales are low when they gave the game away on launch day for a dollar. I saw a report in the UK that the game sold 23K and I thought that was high. Must be some diehard Gearsheads over there wanting physical copies and collectors editions

lol to my knowledge neither Far Cry or Ass Creed flopped with 16k and 23k sales in UK and US first week...

Far Cry and Assassin's Creed are both Ubi titles, and both released prior to Uplay+. Uplay+ is brand new, and has a fully-free month should you sign up with a CC. Uplay+ is also not released on consoles, so it'll be hard to do any kind of comparison prior to it doing so, with a major game release after the service releases (across consoles and PC, naturally.) This is also the same with EA Access and Anthem (another hyped title.)

GR: Breakpoint, Ubi's newest game will release 3 days early on Uplay+ as opposed to physical/digital services. EA also offers "Ultimate" edition games via Origin/EA Access, as opposed to base games.
