People always consistently bash Gears of wars, story telling in particular. But it's got one of the best plots I've ever seen in a game. Characters are all likable, it's original and it's simply a enjoyable read regarding the books, comics and or informal articles. Gears of war 1s story telling wasn't bad, just not fleshed out enough. Had they stuck to that manner yet fleshed it out a bit more in-game I believe it would be regarded much higher in a story stand point. Instead, Epic made a horrid choice and went with the emotional failure that is Maria. The scene seemed so forced and I just didn't care about Dom and his struggles much, I actually highly liked the character in one, but dislike him now particularly for instances like those. Especially when he gets a head shot shortly after it and screams "hell yeah, I got enough for all of you"! Hopefully for three, Karen Travis can fix all this and redeem the story telling, even if Epic has sunk themselves in a hole almost impossibly deep to come out of unscathed. What do you think, will Gears of war 3 provide far superior story telling to its previous games?

I disagree, though the main character seems to be such. Baird and Cole in particular a very likable characters, along with the other ones Karen Travis has expanded on. Honestly, I think they could have been the main ones. Dom and Marcus ironically are kind of meh to me. But I don't dislike them. Especially when hearing more of there back story, Marcus really grew on me.

Uncharted does good story telling, though the plot is horrendous. I don't really see any improvement in three though for that, I doubt ND could. I think Nathan Drake and Sully in particular are pretty likable characters though.

Eh, Baird is alright since I'm a fan of Sarcastic type characters in games but my god Cole is annoying.

I'll be honest; I haven't played Gears 2. But in Gears 1, I found everyone to be a pain in the ass. :(

A lot of people I know enjoy Cole and his bright as day attitude and humor. Ironically, most Baird fans hate him. And most Cole fans hate Baird.

I disagree. I love Cole Train, I like his enthusiasm and humor. He's the funnest character to be around in a game I've played since Sargeant Johnson. He really brings up the morale in Delta. I like Baird's sarcasm and cynicism, I find it pretty funny. I like Dom's loyalty to Marcus and vice versa. Marcus is usually the most serious character and so it normally helps to keep the characters more focused between Baird and Cole's shenanigans. Oh sorry, was I supposed to jump on the hate every big muscly character bandwagon? Well, I guess I don't really like Anya or Hoffman. There.

Hey, I like Hoffman. "We've gotta hit em' where they live"! (All aboard the edit train baby) Or Kim: Who's got the codes, which we have no idea what they do. I'm assuming they give him god like powers, hence the reason R.A.A.M was able to take 25 shots to the face after picking them up from his corpse.

I acutally kinda hated Kim. But I don't really have any valid reasons. Just they way he talks and his tone. I can't believe Marcus' reaction to his death, really. As far as I know Marcus hardly knew the guy. Personally I was glad to see hi, go, really. I'll just say they really give you no reason to like Kim.

I agree, though he did give his life for delta. Even if he's such an imbecile he didn't notice the ten foot large locust general in all black standing behind him and particularly pointing at him to engage and personally break his neck.

Here's how I view the characters. Marcus is just awful, his voice annoys me and he just comes off WAY to serious to like Dom is nothing special, and for some reason he is the worst A.I Cole, while I enjoy his high spirits attitude, and enjoyed his "speech" to the queen, just gets on the verge of annoyance and I just find him to generic to like Baird is great, his A.I is great and I am a fan of his Sarcastic and Down on everything personality. Benjamin Carmine is pure awesome, a great character. He goes from being a Rook who can barely get the hang of things to a very courageous CoG, He has some of the greatest One Liners and his innocence is awesome. Plus, he sounds like Caboose. :P

It's pretty mediocre, N.D expands on it a bit. The story telling is pretty good, from what I can tell. It's the back story that really pulls me to a series, I don't know. I heard there's a book coming out for it, I might give it a read.

I think they tried to particularly make Marcus serious, hence the reason for the voice. Though, they could have thrown a joke or two in between his angry, rage filled, grunting hatred. At least he's not like Kratos though, who kills for the wrong reasons. Even if I did like the story and love Greek mythology.

Many games share that problem. I like the backstory of Resistance and Halo for example, but cant stand the ingame story...but gears with likeable characters? No, I dont like One Liner usin, steroid pumping, meatheads.

\ As does Baird and Jace. Along with every female character. It'd be tough to list every minor character for such as well. But the only really large characters are Marcus, Dom and Cole. Meat heads can be lovable, as well as have a personality.

Calling the plot great is far too generous. Perhaps 'adequate' would be a more fitting description. Greatness requires a lot more nuance and originality than a bunch of meathead jocks fighting to save the world from an alien invasion. Proper characterisation is non-existent and the story in general feels like an afterthought. The best thing that can be said about it is that it never gets in the way of the action and doesn't interfere with gameplay.

Gears 2, on the other hand, is a great example of a horrific plot dragging down the whole experience.

The story related generally to Gears 2 was horrible. Not the plot. The back story really is wonderful, read the books and or comics. Even the biggest of meat heads seem to carry a lot of personality along with it. :)

No. Prince of Persia SoT trilogy has a good story. Legacy of Kain has a good story. Assassins Creed has a good story. Gears of War.....not so much.

SERIOUSLY ?! i mean for devils sake, that is just like saying that Skyline has better story than Inception its just outrageous, stupid, just RIDICULOUS !! Gears is a game that its popular because of his bloody multiplayer, dont try too start making things up just because you like the game.

I quite enjoyed the story telling of Gears 2. I was appropriately well motivated by the opening speech and while the build up to the conclusion of the Maria story line was weak the actual payoff was in my mind well delivered. I usually don't remember video game stories as they all sort of blend into nothingness but these two scenes still stand out across this generation.

..

Also if you going into a Gears game expecting some deep psychological evaluation of the human psyche as it is ravaged by war then you have done the equivalent of going to a club dressed in shorts, flip flops and a cheetos stained vneck

I feel the same way. The story isnt really good but I love the characters.
