http://geohotgotsued.blogspot.com/2011/04/10000-to-eff.html

So that's where all that money he got from his supporters ended up being spent, he gave it to the EFF for the following reason:

"This money goes to theEFFin hopes that America can one day again be a shining example of freedom, free of theDMCAandACTA, and that private interest will never trump the ideas laid out in the constitution of privacy, ownership, and free speech."

A hackers paradise :P

EFF: Electronic Frontier Foundation, for those of you who don't know ;)

Yeah, he recieved more than $10k, a lot of it was spent in court and such (I believe) and there was some left over. He gave the leftovers to EFF.

Not to charity, cancer research, victims of the quake in Japan, the sick and elderly...but to some basement dwellers that are raging about how the music of their Naruto AMV has been retracted by DMCA claims?

Of course, Geohotz is gonna donate all that money to his buddies :P but I definitely agree, instead of donating that money a company that'd help him hack everything he wants to, he could've donated it to charity, Japan, or cancer research. You know, stuff people actually die from.

I can tell you how much PS3 gamers donated to the Japan relief fund thanks to Sony giving them a means to do so: $1.32million.

I donate to charity once in a while. I donated €7,50 to Red Cross Foundation for the Japan relief efforts. I donated €50 to Pakistan when they were in trouble. I donate small amounts of money when a mosque organizes charity and spare some change for the homeless on the streets. I plan to take part in cancer research and after I have a degree I'm going to work in a hospital.
Mind you I'm still a college student so I can't donate much right now.

Using this logic no one should ever donate to any non-humanitarian cause. Hell, why spend any money on anything that doesn't directly help save lives? Why keep blowing hundreds and thousands of dollars on video games and internet subscription costs when you could be giving all that money to starving HIV-positive orphans in Africa? Personally I'm glad he donated to the EFF. That organization has done a lot to protect people's rights on the internet and within the electronics industry in general. They're not just there to protect pirates. They also protect free speech, help educate people and organizations on how to protect themselves from hackers, and fight to keep your internet surfing habits as private as possible (going so far as to oversee the Tor project). They're essentially the ACLU but focused on digital rights.

I said what it does in my original comment, they want to try and get rid of companies like DMCA so people will have the freedom to hack what they want whenever they want.

Of course, but I'm pretty sure that's not Geohotz' intention, the organizations goal is different than Geohotz', his goal by donating to them is to get rid of anything that doesn't let him hack.

You have a point in a way but you do have to realise this is the money his donators donated. Geo did not ask his supporters what he should donate to with the leftover money. Though in someway you were willing to part with your money anyway after donating to Geohotz but alas, he donated money for people raging about DMCA. DMCA was enforced because everybody pirates everything. I don't agree with DMCA either but fighting against them is a lost cause and only waste of money and time. Seems like Geo wants to only fight losing battles, directly or indirectly trhough donations.

Considering that his donators gave him money because he was the guy who hacked the PS3, I'm pretty sure most of them would be pleased with seeing the money go to the EFF. Also, the reason people hate the DMCA isn't because it enforces copyright protection. They hate it because it goes too far and starts infringing on legitimate uses. Anyone who has used youtube can attest to how poorly designed the DMCA was.

To be fair, it is very much related to their original reasons for donating, so I would say it's a fair enough donation. originally I thought he would donate to Japan, but long term, this could be a very worthy investment.

Mind you I'm still a college student so I can't donate much right now.

i work as a volunteer for the macmillan trust (cancer) , you cannot call somebody an idiot for donating to what you percieve as the wrong charity, you should reserve that judgement for people who won't stick there hands in there pockets to donate to any charity, besides, how do you know he doesn't donate to other charitys? on that note, kudos to you for actually being considerate and caring enough to donate to worthy charitys, hats off to ya mate

But this Hotz fellow didn't really "dig into his own pockets" for anything, these were monies "donated" to him for his legal defense!

But I agree with the guy above that says this is probably the "closest" place the money could go as far as living up to the original doners intentions. AI still think the entire episode was highly silly though, didn't he also make a trip to South America? I wonder how much of the "legal defense fund" really paid for his nice little vacation. :P

Which they still lost...at least some gamers like those on Team Fortress 2 raised a whopping $300,000 for japan while others...donated to freedom, justice and democracy aka. Geohotz. Sony amassed over a million and I think Microsoft has donated something like that too...it baffles me they want to attack companies that donate to charity. And donate to charity to attack Sony and other companies. :?

Of course, Geohotz is gonna donate all that money to his buddies :P but I definitely agree, instead of donating that money a company that'd help him hack everything he wants to, he could've donated it to charity, Japan, or cancer research. You know, stuff people actually die from.

They're essentially the ACLU but focused on digital rights.

actually....YES....If we are going to sit here and make believe we are decent human beings..etc..etc then that should be the top priority of every one the life of others and whether that life lasts, and is good. So giving money to possible life saving charities should be number one on your list of things to do.

which is your opinion will, i am actually a volunteer in my spare time for the macmillan trust (cancer) and i see nothing wrong with him donating to a charity that he strongly believes in, besides, the money he donated was money donated to him to help him defend himself and his consumer rights, it seems the logical step to pass that money on to a charity that does just that, he insured that the money went in the same direction that the original people who donated intended it to go, in short he put the money where the original donators wanted it to go, if they had wanted it to go to cancer charitys or japan they would have donated it to them not to geohotz.

Well to be fair, he didn't get that money for other charitable causes. This money was related to the cause he was focused on.

I'll take you seriously when you put your money where your mouth is. Go ahead and cancel your internet subscription, cable, phone service, etc., sell off all your games, movies, music, computers, and then donate all your money to a charity of your liking.
You're not going to
Of course forget all the cancer and diabetes charities.....Bread_or_Decide

It would be disengious to do that when his goal had nothing to do with it.. Furthermore your guys logic is not a sound one.. I can basically make this kind of argument for any video game or pleasure product you purchase.. Why didn't you donate it to the billions suffering around the world?

He has already stated that he's donated $1k to life saving charities over the past 5 years. He's already put his money where his mouth is. The donor in question is Hotz and anyone else who forgos the opportunity to save a life in order to make their own selfish wishes come true.

Perhaps because people's opinions vary on what constitutes a worth while cause or charity. Some people think donating to a church is great, I think it's throwing money away to crooks. Some people see donating to these "basement dwellers", as you put it, the same way. He obviously doesn't.

That doesn't change the fact that life-saving charities should trump them all and take priority for any moral human being with money to give away.

It is a pretty sad thing to donate to. But plenty of people waste their money on buying stupid things like fancy cars and tvs and stuff like that and never donate to anything.

well. that is clearly the best place to donate the money. it's not like sick and dying people are more important than legalizing the hacking a pirating of products...
