Horde in Gears 2 is the most brilliant MP addition for any sequal to date. Of course we have a contender, that being R2 co-op but I'll argue for the former.

+Horde has more replayability: Horde can be played on any map, this include the 15 maps that came with the game, and any future map releases. Since game play changes with every single map and on different difficulties, the variety of gameplay is much greater than R2-co-op.

+Horde fits in more naturally with game style: R2 co-op is forced. Basically creating the 3 separate classes forces co-op elements. Gears 2 Horde fits in naturally because Co-op elements are inherent with Gears gameplay. There are no classes, but it is every player's duty to recue downed players. The variety of roles is covered through using different weapons, but roles are fluid and any player can take up such positions; in the end the synergy is still the same.

In campain players learn to use different weapons such as the mortor/shotgun and realize that its functions are limited. Mortor needs protection, and shotgunning needs cover fire. The natural weakness/strength of weapon styles require players to accomadate in natural ways. There is no synesetic division of classes. In this way the gameplay feels more fluid and diverse.

+Horde has more variation: There are way more enemy types in Gears 2 than Resistance 2. Lets admit it but shooting has a large part to do with the types of enemies you fight. I cant even begin to name all the different enemy types for Horde, but having more gives the gameplay more kick.

Variation is present in R2 because of the different classes you play ass, but it also works against itself because the position you play also dictate the style. You're fixed in the way you play for the duration of the game.

Gameplay is dynamic in Horde and the team synergy can change at anytime depending on the situation. Against a particular wave of enemy, one player much become the artillery expert while other players morph their style to become defenders. In contrast, a medic will always be a medic.

>>Bottom line: Horde mode is a brilliant addition to GeOW2 because it fits in so naturally and it allows player to enjoy the best of what the game has to offer by providing the dynamic and variant conditions for this to happen in.

Horde > R2 co-op.

People wanted a Gears 2 thread, there you have it.

Horde is best played with friends though. I've found myself frustrated at people online who dont want to set up a fortified position to take on the wave, who instead basically charge out, die, and then complain that you didnt come revive them.

I agree. I like Resistance 2 co-op, but I have had a million times more fun in Horde. I've gotten more time out of it too. It's amazing.

I haven't Tried HORDE in MP, I beat it on Normal by myself, all 50 levels, took 3 sittings.
Now that the achievements gone, I don't know If I want to try it with people. People still kills A LOT in GeoW and GeoW2.

Less than wave 30? your doing it EXTREMLY, exremely wrong if your hiding in a corner for that many waves, Its not even remotely difficult at that point.

Too each their own I guess its more difficult to some people than others.

I've played horde, it is better with friends of course because everything online is better with friends, they are your friends, you generally laugh and have a better tme. It can be good with random strangers too, as long as you help eachother and communicate and aren't bickering with eachother.

Gears of war really seems to bring out a lot of angry in people, probably because it is so bloody/gorey and filled with testosterone. I'm always trying to be nice though, and usually people on my team are always very nice back.

CS zombie mod is comparable to WaW zombies, Horde is on a different level.

Ask yourself:

how many enemy varients are there

how many different maps can you play on and do those maps require different strategies

how well are the co-op elements implemented?

how well designed is the game as a whole

---CS:zombie doesnt add up with Horde, its still a great mod, but its not on the same level.

horde is great don't get me wrong but R2's co-op is kinda like a semi simplified version of L4D. the main reason i think is i feel horde will get old in about a month but i see R2's co op going for alot longer

i havent played the game yet, but it's not THAT amazing, i mean this method(wave1, kill, wave 2, kill[though its a little more complicated how epic made it]) was first presented to me in Warcraft III Hero Siege Maps(and of course geow2 is diff but concept is basically the same).

but yeah, everyone i know has enjoyed horde and i when i buy buy the game, hopefully by xmas, i'll feel the same way. but i'm getting left4dead first. :D

Heh.

No offense or anything but coop survival game modes were considered breakthrough in 1993 - with Doom.....

Really now, Horde mode is cool, but elevating it to such a high status is silly.

IshmaelSonata

Well not really.

Its a survival mode, using the gears design template.

Its been done to death in many shooters - survival, and dropping it within gears game design, doesn't suddenly make it leap head and shoulders above everything else. Honestly I have seen far better survival modes and mods.

Its a good addition, the best to a game hell no...

it is a survival mode using the gears design template and its designed well; which makes it better than any MP addition as far as gaming is concerned.

I guess you're not argueing R2 co-op > Horde, or Im guessing it wont be WaW zombies > Horde either,

so  if you dont think so then name any 'far better survival mod'

yeh, its impossible to make it past 20 if you dont have an organized team. And you'll die way earlier on the more complicated maps. The highest I made it to with strangers is 20 and that was on river, one of the easier maps to play on.

Horde is pretty awesome, but you need to play with friends or people who actually know what their doing otherwise it can be a frustrating affair. I really love the co-op in Resistance 2 even more then Horde in Gears but it suffers from the same problem IDIOTIC players who sometimes don't know what the hell their doing.

So for me Resistance 2 co-op>Gears 2 Horde.

What are you talking about its just survival mode with gear juice. The simple fact is your so in love with gears it seems like the greatest thing in MP hisotry. Again I think its a fun mode, but not the greatest thing in MP history.

You know, you can actually praise a game without bashing another. I know, I know...crazy, right?!

If you want my input on the comparison, then yes, I do prefer Horde mode over Resistence 2's co-op, but in no way does that make one better than the other. It's all subjective.

LoL far better survival mod?

Where do begin?

We are talking 15 years or so of gaming.

Of recent Killing Floor (in 3 different alliterations) has been one of the best survival mods around.

And there are bucket loads of others.

Horde is not as good as other 'mp additions' out there, its good, however you seem dead set on ignorantly elevating it to such a high position of praise, you are missing the point, that its not a new or original formula, that has been in gaming for well over a decade, not is it the best addition to ANY mp game.

Just because you like Gears 2 so much, does not mean it suddenly qualified for 'special treatment' for an unoriginal game mode, that is a good addition to the game.

It is sad to me that people really like Horde mode. You people should just go play MMOs if you want boring grinding. Also, as some others have been saying, gears is not even close to being the first to do a survival mode.

well if it wasnt for horde mode i would be dissapointed in my purchase of gears2 that is the only part of the game i like. I prefer R2 co op, a lot more fun and epic and also more addicting due to the ranking system.

i havent played the game yet, but it's not THAT amazing, i mean this method(wave1, kill, wave 2, kill[though its a little more complicated how epic made it]) was first presented to me in Warcraft III Hero Siege Maps(and of course geow2 is diff but concept is basically the same).

but yeah, everyone i know has enjoyed horde and i when i buy buy the game, hopefully by xmas, i'll feel the same way. but i'm getting left4dead first. :D

If you're getting left 4 dead and when you play it you'll understand what Im saying.

Left 4 dead is the same way right? waves after waves of zombies rushing at you. But then you have the zombie ai director and 20 different maps to play on and plus very intricate Co-op elements. So this sets L4dead apart from WC III Hero seige or the simple doom survival mode.

Yeh Hordes like that. Its like including a L4D mod into Gears 2.

Well thats wrong. The ai director isnt gonna send the same enemy at you at the same time interval everytime as in Horde mode. Second horde is nice but definitely doesnt reinvent the wheel or anything. In all actuality, R2 co-op is the same thing(though you go towards the enemy instead of the other way around). You select a level, you have a planned strategy to defeat the enemies cause you have the jist of what to expect, and when they're coming, then you implement the strategy. All im saying is that Horde mode isnt something new--at all

Wait what?

You are trying to argue otherwise, and you actually try and compare L4D to Gears 2 horde mode?

:|

The two are so different trying compare the two because of being 'attacked by groups of  groups of eneimies' is ludicrous.

Its like comparing Half Life and Resident Evil 4 beause both have 'enemies in set positions and scripted sequences'.

....

IMO Resistance 2 coop is by far better than horde. Horde is fun though, and judging by the TC's opening post, it looks as if he never played R2 coop

Horde in Gears 2 is the most brilliant MP addition for any sequal to date.

Timepslitters, virus, infinite fun, especially since you can actually make your own map.

I know! I used to play virus in the airport level with my friends EVERY DAY... it was so fun

I didn't understand what you were saying, and I still don't. What other alternatives are there to the term "alliteration"?

And I don't think it's a grammar error, there's nothing grammatically incorrect with what I've highlighted...

So if you cant discuss the topic you look for post mistakes? Adding something to the thread?

In all seriousness, yeah. I like to uphold numeracy and literacy standards because I feel they really are the fundamentals of all good education, more important than any specific knowledge in the world yet at the same time applicable across all topics.

But this wasn't about attacking illiteracy, it was plain curiousity. Funnily enough, it's further evidence as to why I should parade around with the literacy brigade. Quite frankly, I just don't understand what you're going on about, and I really want to know what this Killing Floor is all about.

Alliteration is repetition of consonant sounds to produce a rhythmic effect.

Illiteration sounds like some botched up noun English professors make for 'illiteracy', because English professors love to do that. I don't even think it's a real word.

So in all confuzzledality, I honestly don't know what you're saying. Three alliterations, or illiterations, of the Killing Floor. What's that suppose to mean? If I can't understand it, how am I suppose to follow an argument?
