https://blog.playstation.com/2024/09/24/ghost-of-yotei-is-coming-in-2025/

Today we are so happy to announce Ghost of Yōtei, the latest game from Sucker Punch and the introduction of our new hero, Atsu.

When we set out to make a new Ghost game, we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world.

We also wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead. At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.

While we aren’t diving into story specifics yet today, we can reveal that Atsu’s journey takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. Our story is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day. In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell.

This is also Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and we’re excited to build on the visual foundation we established in Ghost of Tsushima by making the world feel even more real. We have massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future. Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.

Our trailer today offers a glimpse into this world, but there’s so much more to show, and we’ll have much more to share in the months ahead, including details about Atsu’s journey and the people (and animals) she’ll meet along the way. We are forever grateful for the success of Ghost of Tsushima, and we can’t wait for you all to experience Ghost of Yōtei in 2025.

Wowza, who else is excited for this Ghost of Tsushima sequel! Looks good and glad it will be here soon in 2025. I can’t wait to play this on the PS5 Pro!

Will repeat what I said yesterday.

First game had a hot guy, but of course the woman has to be plain. Why is she wearing men's clothing? Female samurai is historically inaccurate. Seems to her benefit to dress like a woman. Would confuse them. She would get shit for dressing like a man everywhere she went.

It's dumb as **** because it has zero consideration for social norms of the time, making the setting more pointless. In every public place she'd have to explain it again. The agenda doesn't care about logic. Have some Lady Snowblood and Lone Wolf and Cub manga examples of more sensible female fighters, but they include nudity, which for some reason isn't allowed on a forum full of adults. The Lone Wolf and Cub lady has disturbing tattoos on on her body, including a baby sucking on her breast, which makes the men hesitate at the worst moments. Obviously too racy for this fruity world. But even full coverage in feminine clothes and hidden weapon would have been far better than this bullshit.

Good post about the subject, not written by me (obviously):

"So here is the thing, you should read the 'talk' page on the wiki entry. Both terms onna-mush and onna-bugeisha are very very rarely used in actual historical sources. Personally the only time I have seen the use of these terms was on historical fiction books, never in academical works or contemporary sources. Tho Japan is not my area of expertise so I might have missed some of the more niche sources. IIRC one of the terms was even coined during the 60's or 70's by a japanese historical fiction author.

"Female samurai exist in the sense that they were members of the samurai class, mostly as wives and daughters used as political tools in marriage arrangements. We do have some accounts of female 'fighters' in Japan but pretty much all of them are accounts of small specific groups of woman fighting in extraordinary circunstances (like helping defend a castle or a village), rallying and inspiring soldiers (à la Jeanne D'arc) or some corps of female only fighters associated with the defence of a castle or fortification (like the female courp that helped defend Tsuruga castle). You wont really find a connection or tradition between them, trying to force the very very very rare instances of female fighting or participating in war on Japan as something common or culturally established, even coining a term to describe them, is more of an anachronistic thing and in my experience something ideologically charged.

"What is actually established and we do know is that some woman (mainly members of the samurai class or woman who lived in temples) were 'trained' to use some types of knives and/or most comonly received some very limited ammounts of training on how to weild the naginata. They chose that weapon as it gave them advantages due to ease of use, the lighter weight and its longer reach. The naginata itself saw its use on the battlefield fall out of favor because its not really a weapon useful on tight formations. Otoh its a great weapon to use when you are fighting in a small group in an enclosed space were your biggest objective is protecting a fortified position, such the entrance to a castle's inner building. This is mostly when woman were expect to fight and were we find the vast majority of examples of female fighters in Japan, when bandits or enemy soldiers were attacking their homes and the man were either fighting somewhere else or were already defeated in the field. Like a last ditch effort to prevent their capture or the sacking of their villages.

"Edit: Forgot to say that the single most famous example of a Japanese female fighter, Tomoe Gozen, is actually probably a fictional or at best semi historical figure as the only source for her existence is The Tale of Heike, an epic poem compiled after her supposed death and the events the poem describes. Its actually somewhat close to the Iliad for us westerners. A partly historical/partly fictional tale of a war that happened decades or centuries prior to when it was actually written. I have even read some Japanese historians argue that her figure is a way of mocking or slandering the lord she served, like saying he was so weak he needed a woman to lead his armies and fight his enemies."

Would hope that the music isn't so wild west.

will it be as ubisoft-esq as the first? If it is...then..

I can see AC shadow getting the bu bu but its typical ubisoft filler and G.O.Y getting the GOTY nomination.

I'll play both and decide which was best..

Just recently finished Ghost of Tsushima and enjoyed it a fair amount. Best Assassin’s Creed game I have ever played. Ghost of Yotei looks great and I’m definitely looking forward to playing it.

Couldn't agree more. AC Mirage is also really focussed and really well done, if you're down for a more stealth focussed game.

I havent played the first game yet, but plan to soon... I have it on family share. Will wait for a PC release for the sequel if I dig the first game.

Lol at the comments about the female protagonist. Some people here tried telling me no one would care if Samus took her helmet off in 2024 to reveal you'd been playing as a woman the whole time. 😂 It would melt the brains of the fearful....

@Planeforger: You did engage. When the only response to us pointing out the obvious pozzing of games is "incel," I in return think "cucked." Should have been an example of what you say and ignored.

Looks like the VA got to her position for politics. Wants us all to know that she is bisexual, queer, pansexual and genderfluid, a special flower. There's a video of her and others using their roles to promote Harris and Waltz (who represent the duopoly, not us peasants). These people are insufferable. Basically this:

"It's less that I'm 'offended' and more so that I'm simply bored of their ilk and I like to call them out when and where possible. These people are spiteful mutants and narcissists who contribute very little to society beyond deluding themselves into thinking that they need to spend every waking moment injecting their political views into absolutely everything. I'm a firm believer in the idea of companies operating with a degree of tact and keeping things fairly professional and apolitical."

Won't be supporting them.

Ubisoft investors are concerned Ghost of Yotei will steal attention away from AC Shadows.

Put it on the "wait for sale" list.

Ubisoft responds to Ghost of Yotei and Assassin's Creed Shadows comparisons as its own open-world samurai game slips to 2025, stressing its dual protagonist approach

"Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, looks to me – perhaps I'm not into it deeply enough – but it looks an awful lot to me like Assassin's Creed Shadows," one investor said during the call's Q&A portion. "We're talking about that game, Ghost of Yotei, coming out in 2025. Is there a risk that you start bumping into that one, that people will not buy Shadows because they're waiting for Ghost of Yotei in a few months' time to get their fix of a Japanese game in that vein?"

"On the competition related to Assassin's Creed Shadows, the focus really is to make sure we deliver a fantastic experience with this dual protagonist approach with different and complementary gameplay, with Yasuke and Naoe, in the setting taking place in this feudal Japan, which should be really enticing," Duguet replied. "All the focus and everything that really informs our decision is to make sure that we polish the game and provide this fantastic promise."

And the woke rolls in.. 🎵

And the woke rolls in.. 🎵

Can we have like... one game discussion where it's not about a person, their beliefs or their looks? Like an actual game discussion.

Or have games become so utterly boring that we go back to what humanity is best at:

judging people by their looks?

Yeah, this is easily the worst fad that's ever passed through System Wars.

Hopefully it's reaching the end of its ad revenue soon, so the YouTube grifters can move on to the next incredibly stupid subject matter to monetise. It probably can't be worse, right?

What YouTube? You don't need to go to YouTube to find this information. I don't know if the YouTubers have even talked about it yet. The other forum is just able to find it because they're not in your delusional bubble.

But, yeah, homely looking, in men's clothing, obviously will fight like a man instead of in a style and with weapons that would benefit her as a woman.

Lol...

Me: "First game gets a hot guy..."

Him: "The japanese called him ugly because he didn't look like this:"

True, true.

I appreciate the link and quote. However, that is a single investor asking a question. It is disingenuous to state investors are concerned.

Can we have like... one game discussion where it's not about a person, their beliefs or their looks? Like an actual game discussion.

Or have games become so utterly boring that we go back to what humanity is best at:

judging people by their looks?

Nope. These folks believe it is a war thus the battle stance everytime.

Who are these Ubisoft investors that are concerned?

Ubisoft shares are tanking. It's disingenuous to dismiss it as just a single investor. Releasing AC Shadows so close to Ghost of Yotei is concerning to investors.

You are deflecting. You stated "Ubisoft investorsare concerned Ghost of Yotei will steal attention away from AC Shadows." Your own source indicating it was just one investor. In addition, AC Shadows official release date is February 14th. What is the release date for Ghost of Yotei outside of 2025?

Ironically, that comment came from Yakuza director Toshihiro Nagoshi. I think he was being sarcastic. In Japan, series like Yakuza and Metal Gear sometimes get criticized for being full of "ugly" middle-aged men. Yet they sold very well in Japan, as did Tsushima. Clearly, there's a market for these kinds of games in Japan.

It's called logical deduction. You should try use it some time.

I love ugly characters, but more than anything I love when the look of a character fits with their... well character or personality.

And games have been really missing the mark on that, as of late.

Still I'm all for giving this new character a chance. A fair chance and to me that means playing the game, and judging on the basis of that.

Some people seem to already comb through her social media to find an inkling of an iota of her talking bad about some race or group or whatever just so they can hate on her.

Anyway I'm not gonna bother spending more time talking about what stupid people do in their seemingly infinite spare time. I just think it's stupid.

No! You deflected when your facts countered your claim. By your own evidence you embellished and misrepresented the facts. In addition, you have yet to offer the release date of Ghost of Yotei for your launching so close claim.

Wrong. Since you clearly have no clue how logic works...

Fact A: Ubisoft shares are tanking due to investors taking out shares.

Fact B: Ubisoft investor raises concerns about AC Shadows releasing close to Ghost of Yotei.

Logical deduction: Therefore, Ubisoft investors are concerned about AC Shadows releasing close to Ghost of Yotei.

It's not rocket science. It's simple logic 101.
