Now that we know about the Scorpio, what do you think the next moves in this dance among all three companies will be?

Ive been on all sides of the console war in my System Wars carreer, even far pre-dating this account, and many of you would consider me more "lem" friendly nowadays, and I was a cow last gen, so I am not loyal to any of these platforms.

But, I'm going to make some predictions:

  • Both Sony and Nintendo will push back both the PS4 Neo and Nintendo NX to holiday 2017 to launch along side the Scorpio. All three consoles will launch holiday 2017
  • The Neo and the Nintendo NX will both get a spec bump. Both will be 8 teraflops.
  • Xbox will remain at 6TF and just coast off their current momentum.
  • Xbox will name the Scorpio (and rebrand the "xbox one" family) simply "Xbox"

Discuss.

@StrongDeadlift: It's too late for Sony to delay and upgrade the Neo, as developers already have the console and is likely being mass produced already. Microsoft still has over a year to decide the spec product

Hard to say. I don't think the Neo is going to be pushed back at this point, even if it is weaker. As for Nintendo, that's really up in the air knowing them. They aren't going to make the NX more powerful in response to the Scorpio if it is weaker as they've reinstated their whole "we don't want to compete with them in terms of power," schpeel.

After a decade of the PS being the world's most powerful video game console, its time for MS's turn. I dont think Sony will try to match those specs and work closely with developers of 3rd party games to determine what upgrades are needed that can be done with the console costing under $400.

I predicted MS would come out swinging after being embarrassed with their initial vision of X1. Thank god they shit canned Kinect.

and lol @ Nintendo

Nintendo will continue to follow suite, no need for them to get involved with the war between MS and Sony. Nx will launch under powered as do all Nintendo consoles these days. Nintendo will release their own Vr headset for the Nx, and rely on... wait for it .................games to sell their console.

Sony will release neo as planned since devs already kits, but I think they will capitalize on xbox play anywhere and push more AAA first party titles in order to make the Playstation experience seem more exclusive.

Microsoft will just basically spend money until they get it right.

Sony hasn't actually unveiled anything yet, they can always go back and redesign the Neo, better that IMO than releasing the Neo then again ask gamers to buy a PS5 shortly after. They might piss off a few devs but they have the goodwill to sacrifice and it's outweighed by the need to redesign the Neo.

As far as I see things with Nintendo, it's hybrid or bust as it has always been; if it's a hybrid then it can weather the storm of the 4K twins. If it's a console-handheld shared ecosystem then they're just as fucked as ever.

Sony will continue to release the best exclusive games and dominate in hardware sales worldwide. Nintendo will continue to do their own thing. Specs have never decided console sales.

Nintendo will most likely go the value console route. I'm predicting a 2.5 TF NX console for $199 (no frills edition) and $249 (Wii U gamepad 2.0 edition). It will launch in march as scheduled with a massive army of launch games never seen from first parties.

Sony will most likely eat it with Neo being the weaker console. I'm not predicting hardware specs being souped up at all outside of maybe a little overclocking. They'll launch Neo at $499 in October alongside PSVR. Most likely there'll be a bundle with both selling for $699 and they'll treat it as a ultimate VR experience out of the box. I'm also predicting that this will be a massive failure for Sony. However Neo itself will not. With a year head start and Neo exclusive games announced, Neo will quickly carve out its own niche before Scorpio launches.

It's a strong box. It will launch after NX and PS4 Neo.

It'll have some sales, some press regarding its power. If the price is anything higher than $500 it will be a hard sale. People will counter with the arguments that the power is worth the price, but the average consumer will be hard pressed to dump that much on yet another console, especially so close to the S model. Doubly so if they retain the Xbox branding.

There won't be a radical shift in the landscape. Life will go on.

Sony? Do nothing. Follow the route you initially planned. This will change nothing much.

Nintendo? do what is going to happen anyways, go software only (but this has nothing to do with Scorpio).

Well the neo is planned to release sooner than the scorpio and the scorpio is still quite far away. Even if they make the console stronger , it might still be weaker than the scorpio since they don't know what the final specs will be, for all they know ms releases a console that's even stronger than what everybody is thinking. If they use a 6tf chip it could very well be they have extra chips to amplify this like with the esram in xboxone and the edram in xbox 360. They don't know what the cpu will be as well.

If devs already working on games for the neo, they cannot just go back to the drawing board, don't forget that the neo is fully backwards compatible with the ps4. I don't think that is such an easy task for sony. Look what happened with that cpu overclock on the xboxone, the ps4 could have done the same but they didn't, why didn't they, it would have made the ps4 a lot better. Some say it's cooling, but I presume it has more to do with compatibility issues.

But let's say they can change the neo's architecture, they will stall certain devs, and it will also release later. If it is then still weaker than the scorpio, that could be a lot worse. Like slimdog said, microsoft can just throw money at this, sony can't, even after the succes of the ps4. The good sales of the ps4 have helped to pay a lot of debts of the ps3 and sony is not up to such an endavour again.

For sony it would probably be a lot better to capitalize on the momentum of the ps4, release the new console sooner than ms and hope that a lot of ps4 owners jump on the bandwagon. Don't forget they have a vr headset that releases in october as well and that is probably the biggest reason why the neo even exists.

As for nintendo, nobody really knows for sure until they actualy release or at least announce another console and at this time, this hasn't happened yet. They're probably considering to jump outta of this race because making high end systems with two great competitors like sony and microsoft is not an easy business decision.

I would prefer it if Sony released the NEO as soon as possible and prep for the next console within 1-2 years either way, as long as they keep on releasing quality exclusives like Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, The last of Us. I don't care how weak their system is cause knowing NaughtyDog, they'll always be able to make the most beautiful games. Nintendo is in the same boat, they just need to keep releasing exclusives and god forbid its time to capabilities on their Pokemon franchise. Release a big budget Pokemon game on the Wii NX...

Microsoft...I hope people can learn their lesson with the xboned so they don't get xboned again by this company. They're not much better than EA or Ubisoft.

Don't believe Nintendo is going that route at all. Just because they are Nintendo. Sony wont because devkits are out and about. They will sell their upgrade and try to focus on "Only on PS" marketing.

The PS4Neo will be releasing just as planned, and the Scorpio isn't really much of a competitor. People that are planning getting a console will buy a PS4 or an X1 S. The Scorpio is over a year away, and the price will be too high as a mid gen upgrade. A newer PS4 was always going to release anyways because of 4K BluRay support, so the fact that they chose to add that much power was quite nice. And the power is just fine for 1080p/60fps gaming, which is still the biggest market.

4K TV's with low input lag is still not very common either. Around 40ms in game mode and up to well over 100ms in other modes. So for fast competitive gaming, older 1080p TV sets is still the best. 0-10ms in game mode.

It's very possible the NEO won't ever release and we'll get a PS5 instead, but not very soon. Sony is not eager in killing off this generation earlier as the PS4 install base is already a massive 40+ million.

The Xbone Scorpio will probably be named to a consumer friendly Xbone 4K or something to that effect.

I do believe the slim model PS4 will release, as Sony's been every one of the Playstation home consoles since the PSOne (slim models cause a surge in sales, as Xbox also took advantage of with the 360). Perhaps qualities of the NEO will make it's way into the eventual PS4 slim model.

The NX will do it's own thing as that's what Nintendo does.

Not what I think will happen but how I would advise each company to react.

Sony:

Cancel the Neo. Double-down on the PS4 and let MS deal with having to sell the public on owning an iterative console in light of their cross-PC initiative. When the Scorpio releases, the PS4 will be around 70m units in consumers' hands. Developers are not going to abandon that userbase and games will be designed with that console in mind. Allow yourself that extra time to prep the PS5 for launch in 2018, which could very well be an iterative PS4 but allows you to avoid the PR issues MS will face and outpace their console by upgrading your specifications. It also provides your current userbase a reason to avoid moving to the Xbox platform, knowing you've got something coming that will top what MS is doing.

If cancelling the Neo isn't possible, you have to create a price disparity. If MS wants to outpower you, undercut them. This was the critical mistake of the Wii U, selling at or near the competition's MSRP. Even if you lose money on sales of the Neo, you have to give users a reason to want a console in place of a PC, a problem MS is gonna have to address (which I think they will by having really shitty PC support).

Nintendo:

You're fucked.

Fine, I'll try: you must must must get third parties on board your platform. Bu the third parties you need are not AAA publishers. MS and Sony are racing to the top to only discover the PC model will always outpace them. Position your device as a must-own, secondary gaming device. Allow it to be the compliment to a gamer's console or PC. Design a handheld that can output to an HDTV or interface with a PS4 or X1 for upscaling to the big screen. Price it no higher than $200. Provide a platform where quality experiences can be had with budget titles - i.e. cater to the indies. Let them drive the quantity of titles in your library and continue dropping quality Nintendo titles as you have been.

If the device doesn't work out, it's time to hang up the hardware division and become a software company that publishes across devices. But if it comes to that, develop a distribution platform ala Steam-esque or Origin-like so you can avoid licensing costs to the platform holder. Sony will have no choice but to play along because MS will allow it on PC (like they do Steam and Origin) and would be happy for the content to drive more Windows licenses.

/my thoughts

Neo will run its course...so will NX...Don't think Sony or Nintendo will ditch their respective systems just because Scorpio is the most powerful console. :P

Let's try and keep all Scorpio discussion consolidated to the sticky now.
