God of War: Ragnarok Could Be Like The Last of Us 2 by Allowing You to Play As Atreus

Concept artist at Santa Monica, Samuel Matthews, spoke recently on the God of War podcast and indicated the potential chance that players could take the reins, in some capacity, of Atreus much like Ellie in The Last of Us Part 2.

In the short video on Instagram, Matthews discussed how The Last of Us had a big impact on 2018’s God of War. He also said that Santa Monica is looking to The Last of Us 2 for more inspiration when it comes to Ragnarok.

I don't know if he means like TLOU1 where you played as Joel for the majority of the game and played a chapter as Ellie, or TLOU2 where you played as Joel for like 5 mins.

The way GoW ended makes me nervous about GoW2 if TLOU2 is the comparison...

That would be great. I really don't want to play Kratos.

Played the first GoW on PS2. Never returned to the series. Kratos just seems like he's overcompensating.

The trope has ran its course into the ground all the way to the abyss of hades. There is nothing to like about Kratos. They have made him an unlikable character. GOW 1 I was able to relate to him. GOW2 I was confused with his motive and direction at the end. GOW 3 I was livid by the level of stupidity and I could not be bothered after that. GOW PS4 was a good addition but I am not interested in playing his stale ass anymore. Being able to play Atreus is a huge plus as far as I am concerned, so I hope this is turns out to be true.

I need to finish GoW so bad, but its such a pain coming back to a game you haven't played since the first few months it came out.

Agree to disagree on GOW4, I personally loved Kratos the most in this iteration but I'd also love for them to make Atreus playable this would help spice things up.

However definitely agree with you on the original trilogy. While I didn't hate him in 3, he definitely was "more of the same" to me.

Hell no. I played it for way longer than what it takes to beat it like twice over, but never beat (and don't think i was even close). Wanted to take a break, something else came out and i never went back, even tho its one of my fav games of last gen.

This does not surprise me, given the previous game hinted at Kratos dying and made it clear that while he's still powerful, he's over the hill and not the unstoppable killing machine that he was in Ancient Greece.

My guess is that he dies fighting Thor, but Aretus somehow either manages to escape or Thor let's him live for some reason.

Years pass, and now Aretus sets out as a fully grown man to avenge his mother and father.

I think I'm in the minority, but I like the new Kratos so much more than the one in the older games.

@hardwenzen: It is a lot better on hardcore mode (I'm pretty sure the hardest difficulty did not exist when the game first released)

I began on the hardest that was available on day one (give me god of war) on my first playthrough. Its hard af lol. God of War is one of the only games that did not disappoint difficulty wise. Usually, even if its difficult at the beginning, as soon as you get good weapons/upgrades and armor, the game gets much easier or becomes completely easy. This did not happen in GoW, which is really rare for a game with gear progression.

Kratos needs to retire to some Mediterranean island and enjoy his final years.

Fine by me. That kid was a killer once you maxed out his stats.

Further confirmation that GoW was changed not because it was getting stale or wanted to improve the gameplay but to chase a formula/template that has worked for Sony.

Yes, Aretus will be following the practice that started with his father: vengence and bloodshed.

@caryslan2: Kratos isn't "over the hill", he was holding back his full power and aggression most of the game because of his kid.

I really hope this rumor isn't true, the new Kratos was fantastic, without him it's no longer God of War.

fine by me if you can upgrade his weapons and god abilities……roll on 2024 when it releases
