I never Thought much of half life 2 before, I remember back when halo 2 was out and half life 2 was out there would always be debates over which game was better, But the orange box had very good value So I decided to give half life 2 ago and I am blown away!!! even now it seems like it's the best FPS I have ever played,

All FPS seems like they have taken something from half life 2 and put it into there game because they just did so many things right!!Bioshock for example!

Oh and no contest half life 2 destroys anything halo and here I was thinking halo and cod were the best FPS you could get.

I played it first on the origional xbox version, i was still aghast at the awesomeness of Half Life 2. Opinion or not, Halo has not got half of what Half Life 2 has in terms of story, characters or weapons.

Its good but not the best ever. Valve stayed too true to Half Life's gameplay for HL2, which wouldn't be so bad if it didn't take them 6 years to make a game.

It took Ravenholm for me to enjoy HL2. After that the game was fantastic. Anything before that made me want to kick puppies all day long.

Thats what im playing it on (ps3) and it's still great, I finished portal and it was smooth as, almost done with half life 2 and there has been a few bits of slow down but nothing that takes away from the gameplay I think EA actually did a really good job. Such a good PC game!!

Also there are things in this that look exactly like the helghast in killzone 2 almost like they copied the thing,There are even things in this that look exactly like the flood in halo as well, everyone looks like the copied something from the half life games.

Before Ravenholm i wanted to kill valve for F'ing this game up.

After Ravenholm i shut up and said, "OoooH im throwing that, and that, and that, and that at that, and then im picking up this"

the gravity gun is seriousaly the best part of the entire game.

But as for best shooter ever, no.

Id say games like COD, Halo, Unreal somewhate play better in therms of the shooting and all that stuff

The realy thing Half Life 2 is the intangibles. The story is there, the polish is there, the missions are fun, there is a ton of variety, really good puzzles, good pacing, fun boss fights, wierd but effective ways to complete the missions, less linear.

The game isnt completely focused on being the tightest most intense, biggest scale, or the fastest shooter ever.

It delivers a complete experience. I think thats what Valve did best with Half Life 2. Which is what i think Bungie tried with Halo 3(hence the lack of visuals for the sake of making sure its smooth and the game has as many features as possible) although i think they missed some opportunities in single player.

hehe, how far are you into HL2??/ Because I did the same thing as you TC, I bought the game having never played it.... got about 1/2 way through the game and it's started sucking so bad I couldn't be bothered to finish it..... I kept playing thinking oh maybe its just a level or 2 that isn't living up to the rest of the experience..... but NOPE! I played many more hours and still bored out of my mind....

I really can't figure out why people are so hot n horny about HL2, it started out great, but a few hours in, it falls into a rut and as far as I can tell, never crawls back out.

If you love Half Life 2 , I'd heavily recommend to get Episode Two. HL2: Episode Two > HL2 > HL2: Episode One.

I too have never experienced a HL game until I conscientiously decided to pick up the Orange Box after the hype. I like to describe HL2 as an action/adventure game disguised as an FPS. It's sort of a melding of my favourite genre's together.

Good joke post. If people really believe that then gaming is officially dead.

You must be joking. What's Killzone but a constant shoot-em-up?

Killzone - 6.9 It's a functional shooter, but with a couple of extra coats of paint, Killzone could have been a whole lot better.

Killzone: Liberations - 8.3 Killzone is reborn in this consistently intense, periodically infuriating, yet undeniably enjoyable handheld tactical shooter.

On the other hand:

Half-life - 9.4 - Half-Life is the closest thing to a revolutionary step the genre has ever taken.

Half-life 2 - 9.2 - Half-Life 2 is a very impressive and engaging shooter, and a faithful follow-up to one of the greatest PC games of all time.

In my opinion HL2 is are really great FPS game with it's fair share of flaws that really keep it from being the best ever, like most people are saying, everything before Ravenholm was downright crap, the boat bit was boring, for some reason some of the puzzles i found were just lame and hard to notice but after Ravenholm, Half Life 2 really started to show me what makes it a worthy succesor to the original, the pacing felt right from then, there was more heart thumping moments, more WOW moments, aside from the first four or five hours and the pretty dissapointing narrative HL2 was a great game. Nonetheless if you think Half Life 2 is the greatest thing since....well whatever you though was the greatest thing then play Episode Two because that game is stupendoues in every way, that for me is the best single-player FPS ever, downright amazing.

Half life 2 is one of the seminal FPS in my opinion, but i consider Deus Ex and the System Shock series very important.

Many elements popularized or created by the Half life series, Deus ex and System Shock have yet to be bettered in FPS, not to rag on Bioshock, because its an amazing game visually and atmospherically, but its very much System Shock 2 in an underwater city.

When one of the highest praised recent shooters is very similar to a game thats 8 or so years old, it says alot about how ahead of its time that game was.

You should play the original HL2. It's a good game, maybe gets a bit repetitive and Episode 1 is pretty awesome, maybe even better than Episode 2.

HL2 certainly is up there with the best FPS / adventure games ever. like others in this thread it was the ravenhom level that really kick started the game for me, i loved that level. the only thing that really pissed me off about the game was your team towards the end who would just constantly be in your way, you couldnt move for them blocking your way, they were absolutley useless. other than that (and the slightly lengthy vehicle sections) it was pretty much consistantly brilliant throughout...
