When GT5 was in its early days--when it was only called "Vision Gran Turismo"--I remember people doubting whether or not the footage shown was real.
Specifically, when this trailer was released, folks said that it was more smoke and mirrors--that Sony was just showing another Killzone or Motorstorm trailer.
Also, early screenshots like this one were repeatedly called CGI smoke and mirrors:
Sony did bite itself in the *** by releasing those CG trailers, but you gotta give credit where it's due. Polyphony lived up to its promise. The Vision GT trailer looked like CGI, but Gran Turismo 5 Prologue looks just as good, if not better in some scenes:
