Polyphony Digital has been hard at work on Gran Turismo 7, and looks like the studio is pushing on the gas of development, going on a veritable hiring spree in search of new talent.

The studio posted opportunity ads for thirteen new positions, including AI Engineer, Online Engineer, Graphics Engineer, Game Engine Development Engineers, Game Script Engineers, Sound Development Engineer, Data Engineer, Test Build Engineer, Pipeline Tool Development Engineer, Mobile Application Engineer, In-House Tool Development Engineer, Vehicle Simulation Development Engineer and Physics Engine Development Engineer.

We can also glimpse a few interesting facts from the specific ads themselves:

  • - Polyphony wants to improve the situational awareness of AI drivers, and their reactions to the ever-changing conditions of the tracks, giving there a more human-like behavior.- Implementing specific regulations for racing series like GT, rally and NASCAR is mentioned, also for events and “mission races.”- Polyphony plans to implement a tool to render audio based on 3D space infomation.- The studio plans to implement a companion app on mobile that can interact with the series on PlayStation via the network.-The studio is collaborating with production sites around the world, and needs to develop communication tools to make the process smoother.- The use of GPU compute for physics is mentioned.

http://www.polyphony.co.jp/recruitment/index.html

It appears that a reveal of Gran Turismo 7 is imminent, possibly at PlayStation Experience. Let us hope this new Gran Turismo is a return to form for the series, after the troubled PS3/PSP era.

Glad to see they're attempting to do something, I hope this game doesn't turn out to be another dud in this franchise.

Well , i guess the petitions didn't help remove Nascar , too bad , but more Rally so i guess it evens it out.

Good news for GT7 by the way.

I'll believe a Sony release date only when it's got a solidified number, not a year.

And if physics aren't coded yet, do you really think it's gonna be slated for 2016 release like you had alluded to before in a reply to me a couple of days ago?

Good, they need it. Hopefully they are hiring good talent. Turn 10, Slightly Mad, Kunos Simulazioni are making Polyphony look like a joke these days.

Hiring an A.I. engineer for GT7? Easiest programming job ever! :D ("See that line. Yes that one. Keep the bot cars on it.")

In all seriousness, they should Turn 10's engineers.

Hmm a little odd, I assumed they were already developing GT7.

Considering they have less than half the team Turn10 has it's probably a good idea to hire a few more people.

I hope GT7 does well. I love racing games. There's not that many great racing games for the PS4.

For PS4 stuff you can use http://ps4daily.com/

PD should take a long hard look at SMS Project Cars, THAT is how to make a good racing game. If PD took the racing and physics from that game and married it to their usual sky high presentation and graphics it would be a guaranteed winner.

I don't have much faith in programmed 'ai for more human like behaviour'. It just led to odd behaviour in past Forza games. AI is probably one of THE hardest computer related software thing to progress. So better hardware doesn't necessarily equate to better ai. Sony aren't going from their GT drone like behaviour to human like behaviour.

I bet in one of the up coming GT games, Sony wil make their own Drivatar like system.

Really sad how far GT has fallen off, it use to be my fav racing series. Last great Turismo game was GT 3. Forza has been kicking GT's but since then. Turismo needs to really step it up for the next game because 5 and 6 where crap compared to what forza has been doing.

It had the typical GT gameplay. What did you expect? GT tries to be a simulator and not an arcade racer.

The PSP GT game was a good GT game.

I mean, full disclosure, I've never been a stickler for GT. I liked the whole Pokemon-esque car collection thing the PSP game had going for it, but actually racing was annoying lol.

I'm surprised that so far they have one third numbers of Turn 10 developers. As for AAA title that's so small to produce a game until it reaches the release date.

So they might have pushed the window closer to a 4 year span. Maybe with only 350 PS2 cars this time.

I drivatar is a copy of your driving skill is a ghost of your skills if you suck it sucks.

And why can't they get it right is MS the only one who can do good AI.? Resistance AI basically walked over Halo side stepping enemies any day,i remember playing Resistance and finding soldiers carrying Auger Rifles, you can't hide have to face them and move as their weapon shoot through walls, and they will shoot you behind cover,oh did i told you the same weapon also deploys a shield to defend them.?

Ai is not the holy grail of impossibility, some time is rightly done sometimes is not Resistance one was great enemies would flank you, take cover and know when they are out number or they outnumber you and will seek you,and even shoot you through cover.

They finally realized they got lapped by Turn 10 on the 360 and now need to bring their franchise up to modern standards for people to care again.

After GT6, it might be a touch of "too little, too late".

So far all we really know is that PD managed to hire some past "Great" talent from Turn 10 and Bizare Creations(PGR), mainly in the form of sound engineers and Damage physics.

The Thing about the AI is interesting, i suggest PD get help from Evolution Studios, as Driveclubs AI is certainly up there with forza 5 and 6 on "Legendary" difficulty, albiet a bit harder to actually beat.

As far as cars for GT7 goes, GT6 had 600 Premium cars, GT7 is expected to add over 250 new Premium cars, Kazunori has confirmed that Standard PS2 Quality model cars will not appear on GT7 in any form, however all 700+ Standard model cars have been archived, and a good majority have already been Converted into Premium model cars, For example, The Bugatti Veyron, Cizeta V16, Toyota GT1 or Mercedes C9 Sauber `excettera. PD have also said that they have converted over 200 "popular" Standard PS2 model cars, to full premiums, with full 3d bodies, engines and interior, so in closing, GT7 will probably have 1000+ Premium model cars.

Example of a Standard car fully converted to Premium car.

GT6 Premium Veyron

GT5 Standard Veyron

The last great GT game to me was GT4, that game was just incredible, GT5 was ok... but GT6 was a disaster, especially considering it was originally supposed to be a PS4 launch title.

Just maybe with GT7, The GT series will come back? Who knows. All i know is PD is no longer stagnant and stubborn in their ways, they finally started reaching out for help while using their own talented resources aswell. That's a great sign, and as a racing game fan i couldn't be any happier.

Here's hoping they don't skip the fun this time around.

PD makes some pretty poor decisions to keep the numbers on the back of the box higher. They need to ditch the old car models, need to focus on only a few styles of racing, and need to work on the AI so the racing feels more dynamic and involved.
