Developer Rockstar Games has finally given us an official release date for Grand Theft Auto 6, though simultaneously revealed that the game has been delayed.

As confirmed by a recent press release, the highly anticipated open-world crime game will now release on "May 26, 2026" - a year after its previously confirmed 2025 release window.

"Hi everyone," the press release begins. "Grand Theft Auto 6 is now set to release on May 26, 2026."

It goes on to apologize for the delay: "We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game."

It also provides a reason for the delay, stating that "With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve."

It concludes by saying that more information will be shared "soon".

Damn.. must be a massive game.. Well, at least now know when it's coming out. Thoughts, SW? Are you happy GTA6 was delayed? I think I am, I have so many games I need to play lol.

1. Not surprising.

2. Who cares? Plenty of great games to play until then.

3. They can take their time if it means a.) they dont have to "crunch", and b.) the game benefits from the extra development time.

4. Probably wouldn't buy this game day one anyway, so when it comes out doesn't really matter to me.

I'm guessing with all the cutscenes, dialogue, terrain and textures, and all that stuff...probably 150+ GB.

Biggest game I play right now is DCS World, and with a few planes installed and four different maps it's about 250-300 GB, so I can see GTAVI reaching the 150+ GB with all it's different material.

No biggie but still...

GamePass or bust!! lol :P

This is good news for me.

I'm not that interested in playing GTA6 at launch and would rather play the tons of other games that were going to move out of the way.

The "we have E3 at home" show in June should be more interesting now

Not surprising but still a bit annoying.

But as mrbojangles25 says, we have plenty of other games to play, and quality takes time. Now I have enough time to enjoy Borderlands 4 and a lot of Gamepass games I have yet to play. Heck, I just bought Tiny Tina's Adventures and haven't even had time to play it yet.

I am sure GTA 6 will release before year 3027 (no spelling errors, lol)

Why would they do that knowing people like you would double dip?

It won't. There will be more to do, I am sure, but you don't change the gameplay of a game franchise like that when there's 11 digits of profit to be made from it. You play it safe, give people more of what they liked from the previous, and expand upon stuff you wanted to add in the previous game but did not.

Would like to see more roleplaying aspects or some sort of "build" system (i.e. skill points) but that would be a change for the worse in many views (and I could understand that: not every game needs that) but I think GTA would get a lot of immersion if it got the "Kingdom Come" treatment and was a bit more of a sim.

GTA6 didn't get an actual release date till now. Hard to really say it's been delayed when it wasn't given a release date, nothing but the 4th quarter of 2025.

Either way, I wasn't going to buy it as I'm not interested, and I will buy it on PC at some point when it's in the bargain bin. There are other interesting games I'm hype for but GTA6 isn't one of them.

So a couple of years until the PC version still. Ah well. Hopefully worth the wait

Yeah, I saw this one coming. There's still so little actually known about the game.

I remember folks arguing that it was a sure thing this year 😂. It also seems like some folks genuinely believe that everyone is interested in this game.

They want to give enough runway to ensure they can ask 100$ for it...

I mean, if they're charging $80 for Mario Kart World, I could see them charging at least $90 for this. Hopefully, they won't, but that's what I fear.

GTA got boring San Andreas and Vice City stories. Played all GTA till date , but that charm got lost along the way.

Yeah I knew it was not coming out this year. The game only got one trailer and nothing else for almost a year and a half. I wouldn't be surprised if Mafia: The Old Country also got delayed for next year as well.

Will hype die down now that we're a year from its "possible" release? Or should we expect it to inflate to such a level, that everyone is disappointed when it comes out?

I don't care in all truth. I'm going to play it when it comes out of course but I have so much to play and being retired I have time LOL

Damn, 13 years after GTAV and 8 years following RDR2. That's a wild development cycle for these games, and not to mention the cost.

San Andreas is still my favorite GTA game. I still play it at least a few times every year.
