Gamer perspective:

My thoughts on the Rockstar perspective:

  • Liberty City again because it will reduce hype initially among hardcore GTA fans (the ones that actually know GTAIV information, not the casuals). But when people play the game they'll realize it's a completely reworked Liberty City, a totally new city, and a totally new experience. Nobody will be able to identify the similarities between GTAIII and GTAIV.
  • No planes again to dull hype, but new ways of transportation will shock gamers. We all love planes and R* will once again make gamers love something new. Creativity is always the key in the GTA series.
  • Smaller than SA but more detailed. The initial disappointment of the game being small will turn into plenty of "wows" from gamers as they realize how dense the map and full of detail the map is (no country crap).

I realize it's wishful thinking on my part but I think it's plausible and I have no concerns whatsoever that R* will be able to wow me once again. What do you guys think?

The last one (about size vs detail) is exactly what happened between Daggerfall and Morrowind.

Well it is still liberty city but it will bigger and more detailed and more realistic so it will seem very different.

No Planes is a bummer but that is not getting to me that much. At least that is something old "Jack" won't sue.

And it won't be bigger than san andreas but it will be more detailed and the people are much more realistic which just looks awesome.

I'd have to say that I was pretty disapointed in the graphics too. I know GTA has never been about good visuals, but this is a PS3/360 game.

I was just about to say "How could the-very-best do this thread?" but then I realized what it was about. I have full confidence in Rockstar and didn't really like the terrible plane controls anyways. I hope they don't have any RC stuff either or at least fix the controls as the second and third Zero missions were awful solely because of the controls.

Plane school is SA was extrememly frustrating. It causes the destruction of two controllers, and one sister.

Rockstar has some kind of Ace up their sleeve...

Something so good that the community will forget about the planes, larger maps, and create-a-character...

It could be part of their online function. It just may have more RPG elements than ever before. It might even have a storyline so epic that it outshines every mafioso movie, TV series like 24, and The Departed.

Really? I'm liking the visuals. I think they're pretty good for a GTA game. I can't link to it but check out the new screens in Game Informer. They're pretty damn good I think which is exciting considering how massive GTA games are. Lots to explore!

Did you read the thread? I love GTA, and I definitely don't think it's crap.

GTA4 will bea awesome, plane missions sucked in all GTAs being in LC is no prob cause it was my favorite location, and its pretty much going to be different since its suppose to resemble NY. Being smaller might be good I like VC's size to some extent but after 3 ther was a lot of useless space where there was absolutely no need for.

I agree, I think they're working up something very interesting and hiding it from the public for now. One of my favourite devs from the game claimed the jump from GTAIII to GTAIV is as big as the jump from GTAII to GTAIII.

I know people will say "well he's a dev, what do you expect" but he's not the kind of person to overhype for nothing so I'm very excited.

GermanShepard06

To be completely honest, I really want the GTA after to be only for PS3 because I think R* could take advantage of Blu-ray and make the game outstanding.

I know it's selfish but whatever...

Daggerfall was bigger right?

Bigger than Arena, Morrowind and Oblivion combined.

Oblivion for instance is 16 square miles.

Daggerfall was around 161,600 square miles.

good points, but san andreas had a lot of nothing, filler, if you will throught the map.

GTA IV seems like it will all be city, and it will all be inhabited etc.

I like the idea because it seems like they are trying something new. Something that may actually get me interested in the series again... and I am already intrigued. I love the fact they took out the planes... all they were good for was travelling between cities... and I also like the small knit "community" where I can have some fun being chased by the cops again... I never really had an enjoyable chase in SA.

...wow. I didn't realize it was THAT big. Oblivion was a bit of a dissapointment, which is your favorite?

Morrowind. Not overwhelmingly large (like Daggerfall), but still full of unique locations. Plus it didn't have some broken leveling system like that of Oblivion.

We don't know how much it will be like GTAIII.

We don't know if they will throw something in to make up for the planes.

We don't know how "dense" the map will be. It might be detailed but still GTA:SA was detailed and had great outdoor areas, and good cities.

GundamGuy0

That's a very pessimistic outlook on it and I have a lot of faith in Rockstar with GTA so I expect another standout entry in the series.

Why would it be anything like GTAIII? Looking at the trailer it's quite obvious they're redesigning the entire city. They've so far mentioned motorbikes are coming in, but they haven't mentioned anything else.

We do know the map is going to be dense. They basically implied (in the GI interview) that it's not going to have as much country side as SA, and anyways, it's LC...NY is a busy city.

Initial reaction to this thread:
the-very-best? Insulting GTA IV? The end times are upon us!

Anyways, I really think the points you make are what will actually happen. GTA:SA was huge in scope, but it made traveling from city to city tedious. Returning to just one city seems like a good idea in the end, because after I played Saints Row I really realized how little there was to do in the cities of GTA.
Still, I'll miss the inclusion of planes in GTA. Am I the only one who not only loved flight school,? It really wasn't that hard, guys. Except for the helicopter one. That could be obnoxious.

im not excited about GTAIV

the game just doesnt seem to be the game it was hyped to be, i was probably expecting too much, caught in the hype, but honestly i think R* did it to themselves, the main charachter and generic plot certainly arent helping

R-Dot-Yung

We have no idea what the plot is so you can't assume it's going to be "generic" just because it's a man looking for a new lease on life. This is R* we're talking about here.

I think the fact that it's multiplatform has dulled hype significantly though which is really disappointing.

I think and hope so too. When SA was first revealed they only showed Los Santos (leaving out Las Venturas and San Fierro) disappointing many fans but they wowed us then, and I'm willing to bet they'll do the same for GTAIV.

I loved planes too. I didn't find flight school that hard either. There was that one mission with The Truth and that remote controlled plane dropping those bombs that was ridiculously hard I remember.

I think that's the reaction Rockstar wants for now so they can wow us later on.

I'm just hoping they're not underestimating the competition because it is a lot stronger than last gen.

The game looks awesome, who cares how big the city is, it all comes down to how well you interact with it and what you actually have access to. I'm quessing that you might not be able to enter and explore every building etc but I'm sure they'll be plenty.

the-very-best

[QUOTE="the-very-best"]

 1. The reason they are reusing Liberty; A. A good walk home for GTA. B. To see how the past LC evolved into the present day LB. Wouldn't you like to know what happened, both in atmosphere and history.

2. Planes were something minor, a part of GTA, but not to any degree that it would cripple the series. Most likely, its because of the lack of needing to go from one city to the next in previous games. Perhaps, there will be something new a different. A subway system or such.

3. Smaller means a more localized areas, everything is at your finger tips, you dont' have to go miles away to do one thing and then another bunch of miles that way to get something else. You got it all close together, making familiarity and more  close resources. That being more localized, they can instead of having miles of empty space, dead building and nonactice points, they could be alot more live feeling.

That really would show everyone how limited the PS3 is. Try to remember. It's not how much storage space you have; it's how much available memory that counts.

I think it looks awesome :)

Smaller and more detailed, woot!

And not to mention it does have the same dark feel as GTA 3.  Which is awesome as it was easily the best.

I think that GTA is overhyped. If this game is able to change my perspective on that, then it has to be great.

DVD has nothing to do with it.

It's RAM. Games don't run off of disk drives.
